Which brand of goggles would you recommend for the swim? Which type of Macks earplugs are the best to use?

I'm also thinking about renting a bike instead of bringing mine. Which bike store would you recommend. It will almost cost the same to rent on as it would to ship/fly mine to the race. I've also read online to use a road bike instead of tri. What do you think?

Is there anything else that you would recommend for the race?

Use whatever goggles you are used to.  I haven't felt the need for any special goggles on the swim from Alcatraz.

I use the purple reusable earplugs, but others use the waxy moldable ones.  You can probably find someone who has some extra of the moldable ones to try that out if you like (I might have them), but figure out what you want to use beforehand.

I haven't had to rent bikes so I can't help you there.

How comfortable are you doing hills on a tri bike?  I do all my long rides on my tri bike anyway so I'll be using that.

You're gonna love the experience.   Should be a great race (my first time doing it too).

just remembered about the thread and thought i'd drop back in.

i have reservations at the Edward II and haven't heard anything from them.   anyone know anything else or should i give them a call to make sure everything is ok?

also, the water temp.  is really my only concern with the swim.   does anyone have a neoprene cap and booties they can recommend?

The Desoto or the blue seventy cap should work fine.  I don't use booties on the swim, although it does feel pretty odd when you can't feel your feet after the swim...

I think they only called you if they had a problem.  Me, for example...I had confirmed my registration with a Discover card...a card they no longer take.  So they called me to get a different card.

I'm still thinking about pulling the trigger but I just found this in my mailbox.

I rented a bike from Blazing Saddles. It was cheaper and hopefully easier than shipping my bike across the country. I'm bringing my saddle and pedals. We're flying in on Thursday.

so where does everyone stand on training?   i'm hoping that swimming around 2500-3000 yds 2-3 times a week will be enough.

anyone doing a swim before the race?  i'm planning on getting there Thursday afternoon and hope to swim sometime Friday.

So I tossed in a nice swim this weekend in the lake - 55 degrees at the peir 1 foot under water.

We had some nice 2' waves from the 20+mph winds.  I am a decent swimmer and made it about, but when I was breathing to my left - into the waves, it was tough.  I really was tossed around.  That got me thinking about a few weeks from now - I can handle the cold, definite numbness after, but the waves were the worry.  SO, is there significant chop?  But I M thinking about a Friday swim to acclimate
