The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread jmkizer - 2011-03-24 9:32 AM What are most of you using for bike transport? I think we are shipping ours. Tribike transport isn't available for us- that would have been our #1 choice so it's so easy and stress free. We have cases and have flown with bikes before, but this time we're flying Delta and they have the most expensive bike fees. So we're gong to ship them since it should be a little cheaper and we don't have to lug our bikes around with us after the race when we hit up Napa/Sonoma and San Francisco. It will be nice to be bike-free. There's a bike shop in Santa Rosa listed on the race website that I'm having them shipped to. I called them awhile back- they charge $75 to receive/assemble and another $75 to disassemble/pack up. Then you have to pay the shipping fee- not sure how much that typically runs. I've never shipped a bike before so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Edited by runnergirl 2011-03-24 9:06 AM |

I've had bikes shipped to me, this'll be the first time I've shipped and it's for the same reasons, we want to spend some time sightseeing and not have to worry about lugging the bike around for an extra week. If you don't need assembly/disassembly, you might ask if the hotel will receive the package. (I plan to ask a local BT friend to receive it for Vineman.) I had a package of gifts for my wife and boys shipped to the hotel in CdA 2 years ago. I'm excited. Training is going well. My swim times are good and I just PR'd a half marathon (by almost 13 minutes). Need to get lots and lots of miles on the bike and stay healthy. |

Same here. I just hauled all my gear from NC to FL for the Gator Half and I said to my husband, "How am I going to get my stuff to Vineman next year?" Someone in FL said "tritransport" but like you said, they are not servicing Vineman. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Well, good news, ankle is healing up well should be good for Boston, runs stabalizing, 20 miler was steady on pace all the way to the end. Bad news, swim shoulder is down for a bit, not sure how long. Kinda disappointed there. Still some time to get at least functional though. Hope it doesn't get reaggrivated. Should be 350-400 miles on the bike and 180 ish miles on the run, swim ... well it gona be low. Am also hoping that it stops snowing one of these days. I'm at 60 miles on the trainer now... don't want to be doing 100 miles on the trainer lol. |

It must give you a great amount of confidence to hit those numbers. How are things going to change in terms of your workout once you are done with Boston? |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Thanks. After Boston I am going to have to rev up the bike big time as well as the swim. Hopefuly I can use this taper and recovery time to rehab the shoulder and slowly build back up to training distance. I will be cutting the run back to probably a long of 13 to 16 miles (13, 15, 16, 13, 15, 16, etc.) until June and then (throw in some 17-19s) and expect total month run miles to drop by around 60 while doubling swim distance and increasing bike miles. I am already at 14-15 hours per week so I will need to recover to that and then build. Hopefully I can hit 550 in May and 650 to 700 in June on the bike. I haven't actually done the math for the training plan, but will probably be doing something like 3swim by 4 bike by 4-5 run per week if you throw in a run brick after the long bike. It will be nice to have more daylight and be able to actually bike outside for those longer rides. I havn't actually been outside on the bike since I crashed in late August last fall. The swim will be a major limiter this year, I don't think I will be able to build fast enough to save any time on the swim this year. Hopefuly I can get the bike solid and just maintain the run base. |

I am still injured and not able to run much which explains my very pathetic run volume. I'm going to have to decide in a few weeks if I need to switch to the aqua bike or just not race at all and be a spectator. Which I'd be ok with since I could kick back and get a good vacation out of it It would still be nice to race though. Edited by runnergirl 2011-04-01 6:35 PM |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Yay, down to 140 pounds, into my idealish 135 to 140 race weight! Well at least until I hit 135 then maybe 130 to 135... haven't been that low since freshmen year of college so I don't know. Great to havea 31 inch waist back though. Taper time for Boston, so this month's numbers won't be too stellar. I have taper and recovery will probably kill 3 to 4 weeks of training. Goals for this month should be around: 400 miles biked, 75-100 miles run, 25,000 yards swum. Lets see how close our training is to those numbers. Then we have 2 months of solid build before tapering 2nd week of July. The race is way too close for my comfort level, but at least it is easier to build bike miles than run miles. Yesterday I said to my wife, hrm it is 75F out maybe it is time to take the trainer tire off and schedule outdoor rides....look at the forecast... Wed 30's and snow...... Maybe not just yet.

10 | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Just did Oceanside 70.3 in April. I took 7 hours to do it in ideal race temps. I know it will be quite a bit warmer, and double the distance. Vinemman in July??? Am I nuts??? I am toying with the Aquabike full distance too. Our present training, about 10 hours a week. I am thinking I'm gonna have to double it pretty quick if I want to do this. I am good for about a 15 mile long run at best. July....probably too soon, maybe 2012?? Any thoughts. Would it be a total death march this year?? Best regards, Dan Edited by danzgr8spkrman 2011-04-11 11:08 PM |

Hey Dan, I think you are fine for Vineman...you have 17 hours to finish! I remember seeing something about taking your HIM time, doubling it and adding an hour to estimate your IM time. Granted it is not an perfect science. Are you following a training plan? How long are your long rides currently? You say a 15-mile long run, does that mean that's the furthest you have ever run or the longest you are planning to run for training? I had a stress fracture 2.5 months out from IM, was not allowed to run until 2-3 weeks out from race day and finished. AS for the "Death March".....your training can be perfect leading up to Ironman, but race day can throw a number of challenges at you. Nutrition can go wrong, GI issues, massive blisters....and make the race seem like a death march. (I have had all 3 while racing IM and still finished.) Ironman is no walk in the park, but only you can decide how much training you want to put in prior to race day. I say GO FOR IT! |

Regular 98 | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Hi Everyone - this will be my first ironman distance. I started last year after having ruptured my right quadriceps in 2009. Always looking for a new challenge. Last year, I completed an Oly and HIM. I'll be doing the Wildflower Long Course in a few weeks, followed by a 200k bike ride in May, the Silicon Valley International in June, and then Vineman. I'm using the Wildflower and SVIT as check points for Vineman.
My March totals:
Bike 516.3 miles Run 98.7 miles Swim 27,040 yards
I'd experience lots of cramping in my right leg all through my workouts in 2010, but now feel it's gotten stronger. Hope to do all the races without incident and finish strong. It's great reading about the experiences and training regimens! |

10 | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Thanks so much Abbie, your encouragement is priceless. 15 hour full? Now THAT would be awesome! You have an amazing accomplishment without having to live through the issues, yet you overcame them all. That is so awesome. Longest bike ride at this point is 80 miles. I hope to get to 100 miles on the bike, and 20 on the run. Swim I would like to get to a least 3000 yards. I want to work up to a 20 mile run ideally within the next 6-8 weeks(may be too fast). My longest swim has only been 2000 yards. Alot of work, but your encouragement makes me feel it is possible even with an increase in volume to about 15-18 hours a week. Good luck on your races. U R AWESOME!! Best regards Dan |
