I'm also a fan of Amazing Grace, especially by bagpipes.....seems like in my family's Irish tradition, everyone has this played at their gravesite.

Danny Boy also makes me cry.

Amazing Grace with bagpipes. They played it at a fellow firefighers funeral who died in the line of duty. Everyone was in tears, he was only 29 years young.

uh. I was at work when everyone was posting and I'll probably kill it.

Amazing Grace.  This was my grandmother's favorite song.  They played it at her son's funeral (he died a year before I was born).   Then my grandmother passed, I was very pregnant and couldn't travel 700something miles.  So I went to Mass on the day of her funeral, and they played Amazing Grace and I just lost it.

"No Regrets" by Tom Rush

I know your leavin's too long overdue
For far too long I've had nothin' new to show to you
Goodbye dry eyes I watched your plane
Fade off west of the moon
And it felt so strange to walk away alone

No regrets, no tears goodbye
Don't want you back, we'd only cry, again
Say goodbye, again

The hours that were yours, echo like empty rooms
The thoughts we used to share, I now keep alone
I woke last night and spoke to you,
not thinking you were gone
It felt so strange to lie awake, alone

No regrets, no tears goodbye
Don't want you back, we'd only cry, again
Say goodbye, again

Our friends have tried to turn my nights to day
Strange faces in your place can't keep the ghosts away
Just beyond the darkest hour, just behind the dawn
Still feels so strange to lead my life, alone

I've no regrets, no tears goodbye
Don't want you back, we'd only cry, again
Say goodbye, again

Simple but moving, The Moody Blues "For My Lady"

My boat sails stormy seas
Battles oceans filled with tears
At last my port’s in view
Now that I’ve discovered you

Oh I’d give my life so lightly
For my gentle lady
Give it freely and completely
To my lady

As life goes drifting by
Like a breeze she’ll gently sigh
And slowly bow her head
Then you’ll hear her softly cry.

Oh I’d give my life so lightly
For my gentle lady
Give it freely and completely
To my lady

Words that you say when we’re alone
Though actions speak louder than words
But all I can say is I love you so
To drive away all my hurt

Oh I’d give my life so lightly
For my gentle lady
Give it freely and completely
To my lady

Set sail before the sun
Feel the warmth that’s just begun
Share each and every dream
They belong to everyone.

Oh I’d give my life so lightly
For my gentle lady
Give it freely and completely
To my lady

"Mandy" by Barry Manilow always gets me flowing...

  i remember all my life
raining down as cold as ice
shadows of a man
a face through a window
crying in the night
the night goes into

morning just another day
happy people pass my way
looking in their eyes
i see a memory
i never realized
how happy you made me
oh mandy

when you came and you gave without taking
but i sent you away oh mandy
when you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
and i need you today oh mandy

im standing on the edge of time
i walked away when love was mine
caught up in a world
uphill climbing
tears are on my mind
nothing is rhyming
oh mandy

when you came and you gave without taking
but i sent you away oh mandy
when you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
and i need you today
oh mandy

yesterdays a dream
i faced the morning
crying on the breeze
the pain is calling
oh mandy

when you came and you gave without taking
but i sent you away oh mandy
when you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
and i need you today
oh mandy

when you came and you gave without taking
but i sent you away oh mandy
when you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
and i need you

oh mandy wont you listen to what ive got to say
oh mandy dont you let me throw it all away
oh mandy wont you listen to what ive got to say
and i need you today
oh mandy

Jlee - 2005-12-15 1:50 PM I agree with a few of the other songs... Amazing Grace, such a wonderful song.... however it always reminds me of funerals. And my inability to change reality...

It reminds me of funerals too, but the place that I heard it that for some reason gets to me is in the movie L.A. Story.  Steve Martin is this weather man having a midlife crisis and a freeway information sign (the ones showing road closing, etc.) starts sending him messages to help him figure himself out.  I've always felt pretty lost in the world so stuff like this resonates with me for some reason.  Anyway, by the end of the movie he's found the love of his life, is happier and asking who, what, why the billboard is.  It throws a little Shakespeare  at him "There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy" and then blasts out the Amazing Grace bagpipes.  For some reason that just cuts right through me.  Makes me feel very miniscule, but part of something pretty amazing.

Anyway, good song.  Good movie.

Also my favorite Christmas song, and one I can't hear without crying either. Sorry for the loss of your dad.

Thanks...been a while now but it's still hard. Guess it just reminds us all of the quality of life we all enjoy and how much we really need to keep it up! That's why we're all here isn't it?

Pantera always tears me up...

This Love

If    ever    words   were spoken   painful and  untrue.
I'd  been the tempting one,         stole her  from herself.
I said I love, but I lied.
This gift in pain, her pain was life.

In my life, all I wanted was the keeping of someone like you
And sometimes, I feel so sorry, I regret this, the hurting of you.

As it turns out, deeper within me, love was twisted and pointed at you.
But you made me so unhappy, I'd take my life and leave love with you.

Neverending pain, quickly ending my life.

You keep this Love
I'd kill myself for you. I'd kill you for myself.

You keep this Fist

Tear...

love,    love,       love.  You keep this love,     love,      love.  You keep this LOVE.

Figured you out by Nickelback always makes me tear up

I like your pants around your feet
I like the dirt that's on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While you're looking up at me
You're like my favourite damn disease

And I love the places that we go
And I love the people that you know
And I love the way you can't say no
Too many long lines in a row
I love the powder on your nose

Ooooh
And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard
Just to figure you out
And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard
Just to figure you out

I like the freckles on your chest
And I like the way you like me best
And I like the way you're not impressed,
While you put me to the test
I like the white stains on your dress

And I love the way you pass the check
And I love the good times that you wreck
And I love your lack of self respect
While you're passed out on the deck
I love my hands around your neck

And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard
Just to figure you out
And now I know who you are
It wasn't that hard
Just to figure you out

The Mansions of the Lord - West Point Glee Club

Every time I hear this song I just well up. It was in the movie We were Soldiers with Mel Gibson.

"The Mansions of the Lord"
Words by Randall Wallace

To fallen soldiers let us sing
where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
to the mansions of the Lord

No more bleeding no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
just divine embrace, eternal light
in the mansions of the Lord

Where no mothers cry and no children weep
We will stand and guard tho the angels sleep
All through the ages safely keep the mansions of the Lord

I can't say that any song made ever made me cry but a few songs tug at my heart strings.

"Lonely Sky", "Let Your Love Shine On", "Just Another Poor Boy" and "A Spaceman Came Travelling" by Chris Deberg and "Ave Maria" sung by Luciano Pavarotti.

"Ruby's Arms" - Tom Waits

I will leave behind all of my clothes,
I wore when i was with you,
All i need's my railroad boots,
and my leather jacket,
As i say goodbye to Ruby's arms,
although my heart is breaking,
I will steal away out through your
blinds, for soon you will be waking.

The morning light has washed your face,
and everything is turning blue now,
Hold on to your pillow case
there's nothing i can do now,
As i say goodbye to Ruby's arms,
You'll find another soldier,
And i swear to god by christmas,
There'll be someone else to hold you.

The only thing i'm taking is
the scarf off of your clothesline,
I'll hurry past your chest of drawers,
And your broken window chimes,
As i say goodbye
I'll say goodbye,
Say goodbye to Ruby's arms.

I'll feel my way down the darken hall,
And out into the morning,
The hobos at the freightyards,
have kept their fires burning,
so jesus christ this goddamn rain,
will someone put me on a train,
I'll never kiss your lips again,
or break your heart,
As i say goodbye
I'll say goodbye,
Say goodbye to Ruby's arms.

I've several songs that remind me of times happy and sad that bring tears to my eyes but right now, when my father not's doing too well, it's just that we've had such a great relationship over my lifetime and I am his namesake so the song that twist my heartstrings is "Leader of the band".

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go

I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, pap, I don’t think
I said, "I love you" near enough

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument
And his song is in my soul

My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I’m just a living legacy
To the leader of the band

I've lost a wife, a brother, a mother in law, and several friends and comrades. But this ones gonna be tough, real tough.

Daughters by John Mayer.

I have a 17 YO daughter and when the song would come on the radio, she'd look at me and change the channel. I finally had to promise her that I wouldn't cry (much) if she let me listen to it. I love her a lot and hope I've been good to her; I know her father has.

Cat's in the Cradle. For the reasons previously provided.

A Mighty Fortress is our God. Picked it as one of the hymns at my mom's funeral. Powerful.

Taps? Not so much....Since I live on base, I hear it every night at 10PM. But I can understand how it touches others.

Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain (Willie Nelson)

In the twilight glow I seen her
Blue eyes crying in the rain
When we kissed goodbye and parted
I knew we'd never meet again
Love is like a dying ember
And only memories remain
And through the ages I'll remember
Blue eyes crying in the rain
Someday when we meet up yonder
We'll stroll hand in hand again
In the land that knows no parting
Blue eyes crying in the rain

It's a tinly little song that gets in my head like a little gravel in my shoe.

OK, it sounds goofy, but at a race the Star Spangled Banner always gets me a little.

Funny how Sarah M makes a lot of lists..... But she's on mine. Hold On, she wrote it after reading about a couple that found out just after getting engaged that the husband was dying, went through with it anyway and nursed him thru his death.

Hold on
Hold on to yourself
for this is gonna hurt like hell.
Hold on
Hold on to yourself.
You know that only time can tell
What is it in me that refuses to believe
this isn't easier than the real thing.
My love, you know that you're my best friend.
You know that I'd do anything for you
and my love
let nothing come between us
my love for you is strong and true.
Am I in heaven here or am I...
At the crossroads I am standing.
Oh God
if you're out there won't you hear me.
I know we're never talked before
and oh God the man I love is leaving
won't you take him when he comes to your door.
Am I in heaven here or
am I in hell
at the crossroads I am standing.
Hold on
hold on to yourself
for this is gonna hurt like hell.
