I'm guessing it's Lord Grantham's bastard son. Thus, throwing everything off. BUT, now it might not really matter since Matthew just bought half the estate... I feel like I'm forgetting something about this from season 1 or 2. What else happened around the time she went into the servants quarters with the baby? I'm not sure it's a "secret?" Didn't she have the baby of one of the soldiers who stayed at Downton in season 2? The father did not want to be involved and then he died in the war anyway. The baby's grandparents offered to take care of the child, but Ethel refused. Seems she now regrets that decision. Perhaps the baby will be taken in at Downton and Edith will find purpose in caring for him? Oops - you beat me to it! |

She wasn't a prostitute in season 2 - Ethel was the new lady's maid that took over for Sybil and got knocked up by one of the wounded officers who then denied the existence of his son. The parents of the officer initially also denied the child, but then wanted to take him with no input from Ethel and she refused. No idea what's going to happen with that story line other than maybe she wants to gain employment at Downton? I'm enjoying the fact that O'Brien and Thomas are fighting - each trying to underhand the other. Great fun to watch! Oh, I know she wasn't a prostitute then, I meant she is now. |

I'm sure there's some plot twist ahead with regards to Edith, but if not - I was thinking the same thing that she'll become the Lady of Downton Place. Thomas and O'Brien are much more entertaining as foes than as allies - as evil as O'Brien was in previous seasons, I hope she comes out on top - at least she seems to have gained some humanity in the last few episodes with the soldiers being about. |

I was actually ecstatic, married to that old fart? She's sad now, but the world is a-changing! She feels the spinster now, but she will ever be satisfied down the road. I'm gunning for granny from America having her come over for a visit and her marrying some hip American! As for Thomas, he's got his coming, but I can't help still feel a twinge of ill will toward O'Brien after having M'ilady slip out the tub and lose her baby. Edited by travljini 2013-01-14 6:51 PM |

Although I admit a lot of confusion because Season 2 ended with at Christmas too. ![]() I preordered Season 3 on DVD....Amazon says it comes out on 29 Jan but I know it's already out in the UK...so...I guess there are other ways to get it. I should have it 29 Jan apparently. :D
We got hooked on Netflix, but now I just torrent it...we finished Season 3 a while back now... but I will definitely not spoil it for you guys! Hurry up and catch up my south of the border friends! |

Which, of course, could be a red herring too. Ugh, too complicated! I think it's funny that the girls called Maggie Smith "Granny" (who is so formal, otherwise) but call their other Grandmother "Granmama", which seems SO formal. I love the idea of Edith going to the US and finding herself. |

She seemed to be more of the type of person who would have wanted to witness the misery she was putting him through. I was sad for Edith in that she finally seemed happy even if he was an old fart - and finally had something that put her at the center of attention. With that not turning out the way she wanted, I'd love to see her go to America with Granmama and find both herself and someone to make her happy. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay, is there such a thing as Downton Therapy? If so, I have engaged in it. I had a rotten week at work and abandoned my plan to keep Downton to trainer rides only...had a right old marathon Friday night...and just watched tonight's episode so I am THOROUGHLY caught up and can now participate in the discussion. I honestly don't see them drawing out this Bates thing much longer. There really isn't a story line behind keeping him trapped in prison...really...I do think Vera did this to herself...I think she's crazy enough to want to get back at him some way and figured framing him for her murder was the way to go. I thought Anna's visit to Mrs. Bartlett would have been more enlightening...but alas...they want to string Bates along in prison longer. *sigh* I don't think they would have strung the prison gig along for this duration unless they eventually intended to prove him innocent ("they" being the producers). I'm just not sure how they plan to do it. Goodness Mr. Barrow is a nasty nasty man. Served him right when Mrs. O'Brien stole the shirts! I'm a little excited that Matthew might be stirring up some trouble. If he put all that money in he needs to protect it. I should be able to have another marathon in 7-10 days when my season 3 arrives.... I guess that's it for now...bunches of things could happen now...there are so many plot options out there.... |

Maybe she will take off for America! And what do you think will become of Sybill and Tom? Lord Grantham is none to pleased with Tom's abandoning Sybill in Ireland, and Sybill herself seemed pissed that Tom went to some of those meetings without telling her. So, what do you all think? ALSO, do you think Lord Grantham is hiding something in the Downton books? Or do you think he's just a crappy management person in terms of the money and books? |

Its an intriguing storyline for sure. The more Matthew stirs this up, the more trouble it will cause in his marriage, as Lady Mary is very devoted to Lord Grantham & the estate. I think Mattthew's intentions are nothing but good and he has a management/business background. I like where this is going... Also, what did you think of Lady Mary changing the nursery?! She doesn't seem to keen on a child, when it was exciting Matthew. Tom: schmuck! I cannot believe he did that. Lady Mary and the nursery...very interesting...she looked sad to me...like she was frustrated she wasn't pregnant yet (though, has it really been THAT long since the wedding????). It would be way too early for her to think she's sterile. Though, she did go see the doctor...hmm....maybe she is concerned? I dunno...I didn't see what Tom did as all that bad...it isn't like he did it without DISCUSSING it with Sybil...Sybil agreed to the plan, so does no blame fall on her? Now the whole going to the meetings without telling to Sybil? DIRTBAG. I decided last night that the constant stream of changing footman and housemaids is annoying me. Yes we have our few "standards" of Mr. Carson, Mrs. Hughes, O'Brien, Anna, Thomas, Mrs. Patmore, and Daisy (oh, and Mosley)...but SHEESH...it seems like every other minute they have someone new causing trouble! How many footmen have we seen now? I think Lord Grantham is embarrassed that he's being called out as completely mismanaging Downton so far. I'm hoping that it's simply a pride issue - which I *think* makes sense as he's asking Matthew to look over the books and have full access to them. If he has something to hide with how its run, why let Matthew see anything? All I have to say is GO EDITH, GO! I hope she becomes a force to be reckoned with for women's rights... much to Papa's chagrin. As for Sybil & Tom... Even though they discussed things before hand, I still think he's a schmuck for letting his pregnant wife fend for herself. And then not to fill her in on ALL of his activities? Schmuck! I sense that something terrible will happen with their story now that he's banned from Ireland and will only grow more and more discontent with being forced to live in England. The story line with Bates can really only go one of two ways... either he'll be hanged, or he'll somehow be found not guilty and then come back to Downton. Part of me wishes the story writers would just get it over with and tell us his fate, already... though the other part of me likes having another story line for the servants... the entirely too many servants. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't think Lord Grantham is up to no good with the books. I just think he's completely out of touch with how money works. He was given more than he'd ever need if left with the handlers, but he felt like he needed to be important (or was just smarter than everyone else) so he invested it all in one place. Now that he's gotten lucky and has the money back, he just figures all can return to normal, just like everything else is supposed to do after the war. I think William has just found out that the estate could be making a killing and actually doing much better for the county as opposed to just being some symbol of tradition and "pride." It'll probably be far too progressive, and maybe even some actual "work," so I'm sure Lord Grantham won't be that pleased. The only thing he's ever actually wanted to do is go fight for his country, but that was with some misguided idea of how war worked. He does show a heart in how he treats the staff (unless you want to get down with his youngest daughter), but I think that is because he believes he's some sort of savior and protector. In other words, they are part of his estate, and therefore he is bound to look after them. So he'll pay for Padmore's eye surgery with no concern, but had to be forced into opening his home up to wounded soldiers. I obviously really don't care to much for his Lordship, but look at who he was raised by. It's not entirely his fault. I kind of feel sorry for him in a way. |
