2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Oh no, Andrew! That would be very tragic! Sending positive thoughts so hopefully this all gets cleared up and you get to race. I wouldn't worry too much about the swim! Although unfortunate, I don't think you will lose too much fitness in 18 days if the IM still happens. You've been pretty consistent and hopefully that base will hold you through! |

Expert 4921 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Originally posted by bulfrog Finished off the week with a good long run on Saturday. Sunday I split my long ride in 2, an hour on the trainer pre sunrise, followed with 3ish hours out on the road for 4 hours 10 total. Followed with a 20 minute brick run. Pretty happy with my weekends effort. Totals for the week: Swim, x1, 31min, 1,300m Bike, x4, 7hr 13min, 182km Run x3, 3hr 31 min, 26.2km 11hrs 15 min for the week Unfortunately it may have just all gone to poo. On Sunday night the government announced that it has found 3 unexplained covid cases (nothing to you I know, but in the land of no covid a big deal) and we are now into a level 3 lock down for 3 days. The last time we were in a level 3 lock down for 3 days it lasted 2 months before back to normal. And it needs to be back to normal for Ironman to go ahead (currently 18 days away) even at our 'level 2' events are restricted to 100 people, so no Ironman then. Obviously I just need to keep training and wait it out, until its officially over it's happening... and there are still almost 3 weeks to go, things could be relaxed again. But we have had a few community cases of the covid over the last few months, without any lockdowns. So the fact we have jumped into level 3 so fast has me very concerned... Not of the disease, but for my Ironman chances. I had also been banking on hitting the pool pretty hard over the next 2 weeks, which obviously isn't happening with lockdowns. So even if things are relaxed in time for march I'm going to be going in quite under done with the swim. Currently freaking out down here. Yeah, I saw that on our news here. Really hoping the outbreak flames out quickly. Nice work on training. |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Went to the gym this weekend, and also did a 5k walk with some friends (it was sleeting, so we were basically a giant icicle by the time we were done). Had a lovely Valentine's Day with my boyfriend yesterday too. The weight loss competition ended yesterday morning (I think I got 2nd, losing a total of 12.8 lbs/7.37% of my bodyweight, but we are waiting on the final word today), so I got to enjoy it without feeling too guilty. Might go on a run today, then back to the gym tomorrow. |

Regular 1777 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Thank you all for the kind thoughts. Surprising that we made the news in the USA... locked down for 3 cases, the rest of the world must consider that a joke. Anyway, 1/2 way through our snap lockdown and as yet no further cases have been found. That has to be positive news (although as the original 3 are apparently the super contagious UK variant, a whole other set of questions about why nobody else has caught it come to mind. But that is a problem for another day), So in my mind we've gone from 75% chance of no ironman back to 50:50. 60 min trainer ride tonight, and an easy run tomorrow morning planned. And by tomorrow night we should know if this lockdown was a 3 day blip, or an expended nightmare. Knock on wood we're released back to normal. |

Regular 1777 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Also, I just want to say that I do realize that compared to the mess that covid has/is causing all over the world, missing out on Ironman is a totally minor inconvenience. I would much rather miss it, and return to being a covid free country in a month or 2, than push ahead and end up with a proper outbreak like the US/UK. We've got it good, and we are lucky to be in NZ I know that. Its the not knowing what's going to happen that is driving me nuts. Edited by bulfrog 2021-02-15 7:06 PM |

Expert 4921 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Andrew, it was probably more surprise that you have cases, given how careful you've been as a nation over the past 10-12 months (as opposed to, say for instance, the United States LOL). And also our media needs something for people to panic about since our COVID cases started falling off a cliff 3-4 weeks ago. On the race front here in the mid-Atlantic US, very little on the calendar for mass starts like criteriums and road races, but I've seen some time trials and so far the non-IM branded local tri group (Kinetic) is a go starting at the end of April. I'm signed up for an Oly aquabike in September, but I'm not counting on my A bike race in May right now. My training has been all over the place. While we were in Florida I did a bit of a swim boot camp which was great, and I plan to do that again in March when we're in Orlando for almost a month. Swimming is just a pain here in the winter, about 45 minutes round trip plus, you know, it's cold out and I'm a wimp. We also just got a new treadmill to replace the one that died in 2019, so I'll be doing the incline walking thing again to make sure I'm doing some load-bearing work. @Nicole - you were out in that mess? We were down in Canton on Saturday and it was 28 degrees and raining. Yuck! |

Don't worry, you are not the joke, the US and all the other countries that can't get their s*** together are. And lockdown is hard for anyone, so it's okay to feel frustrated. Hopefully it's just the three days!! |

We were down in Canton on Saturday and it was 28 degrees and raining. Yuck! Yes I was, haha. It was pretty miserable. The worst part was that I thought we were going to be running some, so I was dressed for running. I would've had at least another layer of EVERYTHING had I known we were just walking. I think then it wouldn't have been so bad. |

And also our media needs something for people to panic about since our COVID cases started falling off a cliff 3-4 weeks ago. Don't want to get too political, but you're getting an idealized version of how we have coped with the covid, as international media love our prime minister. We're a small isolated island, it should be relatively easy to keep covid out. Just close the borders. Which is essentially what they have done. But, as the border can't be 100% closed people, freight etc do need to come in and out we have had continual leaks of 1 or 2 cases popping up in the community. I think the average is about 1 case every 2 weeks getting through. Usually it's someone who has come in from overseas, had 14 days isolation, test negative then turn out to be positive a few days later after leaving quarantine. That coupled with our governments 'elimination' strategy means it's only been a matter of time till we had another lock down. We are about 8 hours away from finding our fate. As far as we have been told they have yet to find any other cases, so that is a good sign. But the government have always been conservative when it comes to moving lockdown levels. Hopefully (if we stay at no new cases) we're back to normal tomorrow morning. But I think more likely would be a move down to level 2, for 1-2 weeks... which could end in time for Ironman. A level 2 lockup ending in 2 weeks would mean it ends the night before I'm due to travel to the race... Still freaking out. But more positive than yesterday. AND... the battery on my laptop ran out with 10 minutes of my zwift ride left last night... First world problems down here. Haha Edited by bulfrog 2021-02-16 1:53 PM |

Regular 1777 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open We have been granted parole. Auckland back down from level 3, to level 2. - Pretty much normal, but limit of 100 people for gatherings so events etc. cancelled. Pool should be open tomorrow. Rest of NZ back to level 1 - Business as usual. So at the moment Ironman would go ahead, but Auckland residents unable to attend (which would be me) but in a break from tradition they told us, in advance, that they expect Auckland to be back to level 1 on Monday. So unless unforeseen bad things happen, we are all go. Thank god for that. Training, 50 min zwift ride Tuesday (should have been 60, laptop died) 75 min zwift ride Wednesday 50 min run Thursday morning. Despite it all, a pretty standard start to the week for me. |

Regular 1777 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Well, after the last big day on Sunday training for Ironman is complete. The hay is in the barn... or not. It's now taper time. Saturday was a 2 1/2 hour run, and Sunday 5 hours on the bike, starting at 4:30am with 80 min of zwift, then 3:40 on the roads, followed with a 1/2 hour brick. Totals for the week: Swim, x1, 1,500m, 35min Bike, x4, 195km, 8hr 7min Run, x3, 27.6km, 3hr 45min Just under 12 1/2 hours total. And I'm ready to taper. I am definitely feeling fatigue in my legs. Looking back, due to fitting things around baby and the 70.3 last month I haven't really had a rest week all year. Hoping that the next 2 weeks bring some life back into the tired legs and I'm ready to hit the ground running in 12 days. Lockdown wise. They have only found 1 more case since my last update. So we are all expecting the whole country will be put back to level 1, business as usual, this evening. Knock on wood that goes to plan. Hope you all had a good weekend |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Andrew that is all great news! Taper time!!! I've been to the gym a few times since the last time we spoke. We had a lot of ice and snow here over the last week, so haven't run much, but it looks like our weather is starting to turn (highs between 46-55 over the next 10 days) so am definitely going to need to get out there and start training for this Ragnar! |

Expert 4921 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Put in a solid week last week now a bit of a recovery week. Got two cortisone injections (my yearly lube, as I like to call it) this time L3/L4 and L4/L5) this morning so that'll put me out for a day or two. Driving down to Florida on Friday. With my bike...YAY!!!!! I'm also dragging down my trainer and the place I'm staying has a great lap pool so I have zero excuses. |

As expected on Monday we dropped back down to level 1, business as usual, game on. Unfortunately Tuesday they found another 3 cases, who had not been isolating as per instructions (including working a couple of shifts at a busy retail job...) As of now no change to status so we are still all go. But we continue to look for cases... and these things can have a long tail. Until I'm in the water lining up for the start nerves are going to continue.
