Gina76 - 2007-07-03 2:30 PM AusVirgin - 2007-07-02 6:52 PM On my second go around after learning the hard way the first time around about exactly this... My new rule for match.com... if someone says they are "active" or "sporty" or otherwise it doesn't count. However, if someone has a profile picture that either has them either:- - in lycra - wearing something with a number pinned to it - on a bike - in ski gear then they generally get at least a wink! I totally agree with you!!!! However, I just don't think I can do the internet dating thing anymore. Its a struggle otherwise... I have also tried:- - Tri club. It's like dating someone at work, can get very messy! - Someone you meet at a race. Bike leg you get busted for drafting or blocking and the run leg I generally don't look at my most attractive. (See "O" face look in my album!) - Post race bar. Generally its probably the first significant drinking in about a month and I dribble a little by about 7pm. - Ski lift. Good, but sometimes its tough to tell guy or girl and you have no idea whether they live close or not. - Ski bar. Hmmmm, not a bad alternative! See you in Vail over New Years! - Gym. As you have spotted, there is a big difference between even dedicated gym rats and triathletes. Plus I think the large numbers of perving guys at gyms puts off any girl who's approached there. |

The majority of guys at the gym tend to be preverts and they have ruined it for the good ones. Too bad there aren't easier ways to meet other triathletes. I know that I am coming into this conversation a little bit late, but it's hard to train and date. I suppose combining the two would be more efficient? |

That's awesome!!!! I always give bonus points if a guy suggests something active for the first date (or any date for that matter). The only down side is the possibility of that person getting a peek at my competitiveness I like to keep that secret for a while |

Pro 4292 Evanston, | Subject: RE: Dating a triathlete... Great news from this past weekend with a guy I've been seeing about once a month, long distance, since February. He flew into Philly this time, so I got to plan everything... for our daytime date Monday I borrowed a bike his size from my neighbor and took him pedaling around the river then through Center City to the Italian Market, lounged around eating gelatos, and rode back. What SUPER encourages me is that he really loved the bike ride -- has thanked me for it about 10 times, and wants to start riding his bike to work! Folks, I see spandex in this man's future... |

Extreme Veteran 380 Frome, (Nr Bath) Somerset | Subject: RE: Dating a triathlete... Just to the single triathletes whohave posted here - reading this thread it sounds as though you all have plenty of fulfillment in your lives - this no doubt makes you more attractive to potential partners. I think you are right to have a good understanding about what you want from a relationship and what you may be prepared to compromise on. I imagine you are unlikely to settle for just anyone becuase you don't want to be alone - this is definately attractive and I hope you all find someone - when you're ready. I have many single friends who seem to focus all their energies on trying to meet someone, dating people, dumping people, badmouthing people they have dumped or been dumped by. And it just seems to me that if they actually stopped spending most their time getting tied up in all this drama and dliemas then they would be far more likely to actually meet someone they could be with for the long term. I'm convinced that many people throw themselves into this dating drama because they have little other focus in their lives. As triathletes you have a passion, something you are doing just for you, to improve your lives - believe me this makes you a more interesting person and far more attractive to others. The right ones are out there when you're ready |

Extreme Veteran 380 Frome, (Nr Bath) Somerset | Subject: RE: Dating a triathlete... By the way, my boyfriend of nearly 6 years is not a triathlete or a dedicated exerciser. However because he is in the army he has to do a certain amount of training and would never like to be unfit. We have just found out that he will be going to Afganistan for six month minimum from September, and I know that if I didn't have triathlon to focus my energy on it would be a hundred times harder than it is going to be. Although he doesn't necessarily understand why I enjoy triathlon and want to pursue this lifestyle, he appreciates that I have something else to keep me busy and it means he can go away and not have to worry about me sitting alone waiting for him, (last thing he'd need) especially as we recently moved to a new area where we don't know anyone. Fortunately I'm already making friends at the triathlon club so I will have plenty to do while he's gone. So yep another keeper! |

Extreme Veteran 474 Sydney | Subject: RE: Dating a triathlete... MikeJ - 2007-07-04 6:02 AM Some of you have got it all wrong! You are living in a dream world, no wonder you are still single! Would love a clarification here Mike... Having been stuck in a relationship where the final compromise on my side without any kind of flexibility having been seen on the other side left me even more miserable and unfulfilled. We were both very happy for a long time, but when the compromises on my side saw the constant erosion of time spent doing the things I love to be exchanged for more time people watching in coffee shopes, going for drives and going to the mall - all in the name of doing things together one of us stopped being happy. All of those things have their place but should not constitute the core of ones free time! Now I realise its not about having everything in common, but it is important that both parties either have things they are passionate about and so can relate to the other persons needs or neither party has anything they are passionate about in which case they can be happy doing whatever the other person wants. |

You are living in a dream world, no wonder you are still single! Would love a clarification here Mike... Andrew, you already touched on where I am coming from. The road to relationship happiness isn't necessarily found by matching with somebody exactly like yourself. In fact, it usually enriches the relationship to have various interests that you can share with eachother. The key, as you stated, is understanding, and if anybody thinks that by finding another individual who is as dedicated to triathlon/fitness as you are is the only way to achieve that, then you are going to miss out on some pretty wonderful people. Ask yourself, do you really want somebody who is exactly like yourself?? |

Veteran 198 | Subject: RE: Dating a triathlete... wurkit_gurl - 2007-07-02 2:44 PM grow up ice-climbing ok now that's hot! I go back and forth on if its a good thing to have a partner who does the same things that I do. I mean it would be nice to share some hobbies but I'm a pretty obsessive person (read as complete psycho) and having a wife who isn't into those things really helps to keep me grounded. Face it people, we're all freaking insane. Not because we work out hard but because we eat, drink, and sleep this stuff 24/7. That isn't normal or healthy. Having someone around who cares about you to remind you that there are other things out there isn't a bad thing - especially if that reminder is gentle and they continue to support your obsessions. Plus if you think its hard to meet a good triathlete then you should try meeting climbers/mountaineers. There aren't many women down for sleeping in a tent/van in the desert without showers for weeks at a time. Or who can begin to comprehend why you would spend weeks sitting at the bottom of a 20 foot piece of rock in the middle of the woods trying to get that one crux move dialed. When your idea of the perfect vacation involves freezing and suffering for a week straight puctuated by times of sheer terror and overwhelming excitement then there just aren't that many people who will tag along. To me the ideal woman has toned forearms, wicked lats, and isn't afraid to take a poop in a bag. Then again I think having a wife willing and ready to remind me that there is more to life than climbing a rock might be a whole hell of a lot more valuable in the long run. I'd say the same for triathletes. BTW great thread to bring back! |

Regular 281 | Subject: RE: Dating a triathlete... My gf is back home in Chicago with family for the summer. She is flying down this week so we can take a trip down to Savannah and the Georgia coast. I mentioned to her that I wanted to do a 20 or so mile bike ride from our hotel to the beach and for her to just meet me there. She said "You're a F'n crackhead but no problem. Though I'm not waking early to meet you". I told her to take her time because I'll just be drinking some beer and hurricanes on the beach looking at the pretty women in bikinis. Infact we have a couple more trips planned this year. I might fly to her beach house in LA to do a Muddy Buddy race and then hit her Grandpa's house up in Key Largo for the Miami triathlon (international distance) in November I believe. She's cool with that. My GF is badass!!! |
