Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey DJ I won't weigh in on the swim workout, will save that for some of the experts. I can tell you that I started out with nose plugs because I hate water up my nose. I felt like a bozo wearing them. Eventually, I started working on exhaling through my mouth and nose while underwater 25 yards at at time. I have not used the plugs in about a year and you can definitely get by without them if you practice. Honestly, I don't even blow out my nose consistently. WHen I need to, I do, otherwise the water justs doesn't bother me anymore. The benefit for me was the ability to take in more oxygen when I turn to breathe. Suzy |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There have been a few posts about lifting the head while breathing. A great mental picture to help with this is laying your head on a "pillow" when you breath. As you swim your body is rolling from one side to the other as one stroke starts and the other finishes. When you are NOT breathing your head is still and the body rotates around it..when you take a breath your head will rotate WITH the body. If you are going to breath to the right think about laying your head (ear) on your left shoulder (pillow) as your body rolls to the right. Same thing if you are going to breath to the left..lay your head on your right shoulder as your body rolls to the left. Just something to think about. Robert Edited by TriFrog93 2009-12-30 11:05 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dbw27 - 2009-12-30 7:41 AM Great goals, you will get hooked really fast after that first race and the pounds will come with the training, spend plenty of time building a base that is the best zone for shedding weight. Wish that were me! I seem to gain weight while training! What's your secret? :-) dbw27 I know when I trained just over 2 years ago for my first marathon, I gained about 10 pounds especially towards the end. I got in a mentality that I was running so much that I could eat and everything. Not saying that you do that, just was one thing that I recognize after the fact. The tri training has helped me trim back down, dont get me wrong I still eat candy and stuff that is not considered healthy, but part of why I workout so hard is to feel a bit less guilty about that. I think the biggest thing for me was getting out and doing my HR tests for running etc. When I ran my first marathon, I did it with a Polar HRM. I ran most of it at about 185, my training was all in that range as well, maybe a bit lower. My second marathon and through tri training, I tested my HR zones and trained correctly. For training runs I was down in the 140ish range. I did a lot of running with my wife who was training for a 10 mile race, so it forced me to run slower and kept my zones lower. That being said, I cut over 30 minutes off my time, and did not feel like I was going to die the whole run (only the last mile or so when I was pushing my pace) It is painful to start training in those low zones but base building is HUGE for both fitness going forward and weight loss aspects. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TrevorC - 2009-12-30 9:29 AM Hey Robert you are the swim coach i think right? IF you are question for you..... I've got a 1900m swim workout today. One set of the drills calls for head lead side kick and then are lead side kick. What's your thoughts on using zoomers to complete these drills?? I have a pretty weak kick, and 100m of head lead side kick may drown me. Trevor-- I was a swim coach for 15 years...haven't coached since 2004, but I will answer your question. I am not a fan of zoomers and never had my swimmers use them. We would use regular fins in workout..I felt they helped more with ankle flexibility. If you have zoomers and not regular fins you will probably be ok...It's not like you will be doing 1,000m kick sets. I believe the drills you will be doing are to help develop proper body position (drills have many different names) and if the workout has you doing 100 repeats of a drill and you are having trouble maintaining form for the entire 100 I would break it down into a distance that allows you to maintain proper technique before I started using zoomers for help. Drills were not meant to be done fast...just done well. If doing 2x50s instead of 1x100 allows you to preform the drill properly I would think you would be better of not using the zoomers. Robert |

I will check with DH but if anyone else has family or if you are racing Sat but sticking around for Sunday that would like to Volunteer we would need about 15-20 ppl for a run station. I was going to ask for a early station so we get done sooner. Let me know if anyone wants to do this and I'll let Audra (w/ Lonestar) know. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, healing is going well. I specifically did not look at what 'exactly' was going to happen, good thing I didn't. When I got in the dr office the nurse drops a pamphlet and says "look through this and ask the dr if you have any questions." I saw 1 pic and realized that I was totally unprepared for where the cuts were going to be - yikes. So while no, it wasn't painful... it was very uncomfortable. Today is day 2 of recovery. |

Do you use them during regular drills or for something more specific like when you are focusing on kicking? I have to admit that I have no clue what the difference between "regular" fins and zommers are. I have fins I use for sorkeling...would those constitute "regular" fins? |

Zommers are just really short fins. They don't have as much length to them therefore they do not propel you as much( I think???) I only use them when I do kick drills 'cause my kick is pathetic and I don't want to be swimming 100m kick drills for 10 minutes. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So on the fins/zoomers question - I've been told by several swim coaches to use them. One b/c my kick is terrible and I take about 3min per 50 w/o them. I think the masters coach couldn't take it! LOL I've also been told to use them for drills when I need to work on something specific. The fins keep my body in a better position/balance so I can focus on the drill/exercise/whatever that I am supposed to be doing and not on keeping my fat a*s from sinking. That said - I had my first swim lesson yesterday w/ Tony's swim coach. She videotaped me - UGH!!!!!!!!!!! I hate seeing myself on video. No joke I looked like a wounded sea lion. It wasn't pretty. Anyway to make a long story short - she told me to settle down my kick, keep my arms at 11 o'clock and focus on balance in the water. I did my swim set this morning and I was 20-30 sec. faster than I had since starting back in the pool this month. Now I'm back to where I was in June, knocked out the flailing crap and am ready to realy start swimming. Thank goodness. I go back in a week or so for another lesson. It was a tough day yesterday. I also had my bike VO2 test and my numbers were crappy. I feel like I should be stronger on the bike but I know I'm not. It drives me crazy. So I spent the afternoon moping around but now I'm back to kick some butt and work on my workouts. :-) |

Goals/Resolutions for 2010: 1) Complete Marathon training/race injury free and with a finish time that starts with a 4:?? 2) Train consistently for my races this year...especially my HIM in September and to be able to "race" these events instead of just completing them. 3) Maintain my weight below 210....or just be back in a 32 pants....who cares what the scales say. 4) Really focus on healthy eating, building healthy relationships and personal growth. 5) Reconnect with my passions of reading and cooking and develop some more...maybe tennis.
