Getting out of the hospital today. Took out the NG tube- google it for the non docs- that was bloody awful. But at least I could eat niow , never thought gello would taste so good. Will have to figure out how to come back from this smartly without too much interruption in race prep. The clear liquids help the race weight issue. Phew, glad all is clear. |

Yeah, isn't there a whole chapter in Fitgerald's book "Racing Weight" dedicated to the effective use of an NG tube? In all seriousness glad to read that you are on the mend and headed home soon! |

Potholes the size of sewer grate covers (and as deep), ankle deep pools across the roads from the melt, more sand than at the beach! All that said, I'm glad I went. It's usually mid-April around here before a couple really good rains wash the roads and the towns get the sweepers out. After the second sweep, they're usually gtg, but they're FAR from that at the moment. Thank goodness for gatorskins! Matt |

I got in a nice run outside today and then a trainer ride. It was warm enough, but 27mph winds made me think twice.... It was windy out there for sure Fred. Started light then picked up an hour into the ride. The 1st 37 miles was going up with 1 1/2 of strong head wind. Strava has an upload of the hill. On the way back and the last 10 miles I was hit by of strong left echelon wind. At times I had to lean hard into the wind to keep from being blow sideways. At least it wasn't a headwind. |

As Fred said, feel free to ask any questions at all. Are you following a plan for the Ironman? You say swimming is the biggest hurdle, what is your background and experience with it and how are you going to work on it? |

Been a busy week for me too...Too many 15 hr days, call nights, meetings... I used to like to practice medicine a lot more than now. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Chris-It's great to hear that you are not having major setbacks with your GI tract. Somewhat unusual for a stud triathlete to have obstruction, so I hope they follow you closely. Also happy you are able to get back to training and will be able to race. |

Hey Jerry, learning just to swim is definitely a big challenge. Swim as often as you can handle it, 3-4 a week would be a good start. As you go your swim fitness alone can see improvements in times. Onsite swim coaching in helping you with your form and possible workout is a good thing. I have found over the years that the harder I push at the swim training, fitness and speed improves faster.

Veteran 945 South Windsor, CT | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Today, my powermeter (all of 2 months old) crapped out. Likely a battery, and I'll get to it later. But I did do outside rides yesterday and today, much of it before it died. I noticed 4 things that I did not appreciate before. 1)Hr is significantly delayed to power-much more than I realized 2)You have to be really aggressive when going up into rolling hills with the shifting to maintain a high cadence and not push the power WAY above FTP 3)You have to be really aggessive when going down from rolling hills to maintain power-much more than I appreciated 4)Power outside is much higher (20W?) than inside on the trainer (for me) Am I just late to the party and everyone already knows this or am I just slow and s*ck at shifting? Here's my Garmin from Thursday-20miles outside; moderate wind; 5x1min high cadence, 25 minutes hard, 4x30sec hard-uphill (I'm in the PowerMentor group, but I'm so late, I feel awkward asking this there) http://connect.garmin.com/activity/464590990 I'm open to comments... |

Seattle | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! I'm a little bit bummed I had to DNS a 5K today but I felt as though time would be better spent completing a more specific marathon workout. I did 6 miles moderate (no rest) and then 10 miles at marathon pace with a goal of finishing fast. The last two miles were done on the track with my coach observing. He handed me water and gave a mile split for race simulation. Then I did 3 miles CD. It was really tough and I had to do it solo but I think I made a good decision. |

Nice job on getting out there Dale. I don’t train with power (except on a CT) HR will lag during any interval work. Really depends on how hard you’re pushing. Rollers can take time and experience to get smooth. If you are not timing them well they can sap you badly. On the other hand, time them well and you can be very fast. Fred is very fast on rollers and he’s got the Strava to prove it. Just more experience on them and you’ll be fine. I also thing using power on rollers them is a lot different in terms of a steady state. As I said I don’t use power so could be wrong. You can’t compare trainer efforts and road efforts. It’s way different rolling restraints, wind, terrain etc….So not surprising you are seeing differences in power numbers. The power grues should jump in. Still good work.

Just think how bad you would have felt if you DNS and NO training. Most likely very bad and if you would have told us, the heckling would have been much worse. Great job on that training! |

I think all 4 of your observations are pretty typical, especially 2 and 3. It was certainly the biggest eye opener for me. I've never really trained with HR so I can't comment on #1 but I have read that a lot. As for inside and outside, I am pretty sure I can put out higher numbers outside as well but it's tough to get a direct comparison. Good job getting out for the rides, I'm really hoping to get out sometime soon but I have no real hope. Possible snowstorm here again on Wednesday. |

Dale and Fred - Docs don't really know why it happened, other than, um, well, too much stuff..... That I think I can work on. I seem to be the king of acquiring medical conditions that don't make much sense (2X PE...). Will be having a GI followup and likely moving that colonoscopy thing forward a couple years (I'm 47) Feel pretty good now, only problem is a nice little chest congestion from the hospital stay coupled with irritation from teh NG tube (i assume), So even if I felt up to it, this weekend is all rest |

Master 2621 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!! Hey how was everybody's weekend? Chris so glad you are out of the hospital.I am on a rest week, coming off two big volume weeks. I feel good except for a little tendon issue in my right ankle. I think it is do to the ramping up of cycling outside. Anyways the rest week will help that. I swear I feel that in a couple of months I could be ready for a Ironman. In the mean time I thinking heavily about a sprint on May 4th to shake out the race cobwebs. |

In the mean time I thinking heavily about a sprint on May 4th to shake out the race cobwebs. James, you have definitely been putting in the work - great consistency and volume. Watch the ankle, though! Outdoor sprint in May? Me too, probably, but brrrrrrrrr... Tough weekend for me, unfortunately (although nothing like an obstruction and hospital time!!!). Right hamstring is increasingly sore (the one that popped last August, so a bit worried). Terribly hard run Saturday evening. Bailed on my swim and ride on Sunday - just too tired and too much pain (not the good kind of suffering pain, but the pain kind of pain). Plus, looks like a new job is on the horizon. So, I'm sitting here on a programmed rest day beating myself up about making what I know was the right decision and bagging yesterday (let the chorus yell HTFU, I know), thinking about just doing a long ride today in the cold (not programmed - just a redemption ride and not a good idea!) and almost a little bummed about likely getting a new job (which should be a VERY positive thing) because it might cut into my training time. WTF? I laughing at myself for the above (as in, I'm over it - but it was a weird day or so, for sure!), but amazed that I managed to get my head that turned around! Any of you ever feel like tri has kind of warped your perspective on life in a less than healthy way? It is always a challenge to find the time for it all, but I surprised myself with the above. Struggling to find time to work out is different than feeling significantly unbalanced when you miss one day of working out! All good now, but just a bizarre weekend... OK - off to the pool for an EASY swim, as planned. Matt |
