Master 2005 South Florida | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread If you are doing your training, mostly, you are gonna be good Had an interesting race experience yesterday at the Miami Nice Tri! Started the race in a wicked downpour..couldn't see 2 feet in front of us....got nearly to the first bouy when we heard a boom and saw a flash....we all popped our heads up and went "What now???"...."Keep swimming!!"...some turned back, some of us fools went on, only to run into the wave ahead coming back saying they were turning us back to shore! They restarted the race after the storm blew by - the olympic distance swim was shortened to the 750 sprint distance, bike and run still 40k/10k. Got to transition where people's stuff was literally floating in about 6 inches of water! As we were coming around for the 2nd loop on the bike, they had us turn in and just do one loop!! WTH?!?! just as I was getting warmed up! The run was through lots of mud and puddles (LOVE IT), but they kept THAT part 2 loops for 10K. Moral of the story - never know what the day will bring ya! Gotta "go with the flow" It was a good time nonetheless. Medium week this week, then a training camp and half iron next weekend in Clermont, FL....Fit2tri is renting a house - homecooked meals, supported rides and runs, swim clinic with Sarah McClarty and lots of fun.....race-there's an oly and HIM - or training on the 12th...anyone want to join at the last minute, PM for details!!!! |

Veteran 593 Mandeville | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I was supposed to ride 100 on Saturday and run 18 yesterday. We had some awful weather here in south Louisiana. Rain and lightenting turned Saturday into a 16 mile run. Yesterday, I was only able to get in 55 mile ride. Good news is, I felt great on both of the workouts with lower temps (because of the rain). After cranking out high mileage for July, I have cut it back the last 3 weeks. Time to start cranking it up again. 75 mile ride this weekend then it cranks back up to three 100 mile rides in 5 weeks. |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Every now and then it hits me how close race day is. But, like Mimi said, as long as the training is getting done, we should be mostly ok. I just keep thinking how nice the cooler temps of Florida will be than what I've been training in. We actually had a small break in weather Saturday morning and when I started my ride it was 68 degrees. It made the first 2 hours of the bike nice, but then it heated up again and my brick run was hot and humid. Nothing like the conditions Mimi raced in, though. OH MY!!!!! Happy training everyone. |

Master 1779 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I got my long run in on Saturday. Went out on Sunday morning alone for my 6 hour ride. Of course today would be the day that I forgot to grab my cell phone. I had to cut the ride short at the 50 mile mark due to heat exhaustion. I started feeling bad around 2:20 hours into the ride. Stopped to take in a few salt pills and a GU. I started feeling chills and dizzy as soon as i got off the bike. The heat index was 108 yesterday so being cold wasn't a good sign. Coasted into the nearest gas station which was 7 miles away. As soon as I got there I started taking in more fluids and salt and bought a 5lb bag of ice to put on my groin to start bringing my temperature down. My teenage son came and rescued me from the gas station. After we got home it took about 1.5 hours until I stopped feeling cold. The headache didn't go away until this morning. The only thing that was different on this ride is that I was ahead 2 servings on my nutrition at the 2 hour mark (probably because it was so hot) and trying GU chomps for the first time. It is always hot here so I'm not sure what was different yesterday. I'm feeling better today. Stilled a little bummed about not being able to get my long ride in. |

Expert 1360 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread this weekend was a cut back weekend for me. nice and easy 80 km ride/6 km run on Saturday and a 12 km run on sunday. My back is finally starting to feel a lot better. I think I am going to test the water on Wednesday and go for a swim. Shorter than the schedule has, but if it works out, then I can do my long swim on Friday. Fingers crossed! |

Expert 1139 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Got in 110+ miles on the bike over the last three days. No actual "long" ride but I'm real happy with how my legs have felt, and are feeling right now. I've been having a weird feeling stomach for the past two weeks and after getting some alarming blood tests back and then a CT scan, they still don't know what's wrong. It's kind of a gassy pain that comes and goes, I feel fine on the bike but I'm getting terrible side pains on the run, swim is fine as well. I have another appointment this week with new blood tests so hopefully something more conclusive can be found. It's getting frustrating that every time I think I'm going to be able to up my run something else happens. *crosses fingers that September is my month* |

Regular 72 Baltimore, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Wow, sounds like everyone has had quite eventful weekend with monsoon races and unfortunate health hiccups. Im finally getting my motivation back and no time to soon. I can't imagine where I would be with out this forum. Just reading about peoples swim/rides/runs makes me want to get my butt out there and do it. It also helps me not to be too hard of myself when things don't go as planned (which seems more the rule than the exception) The other motivating factor is the number of people comming to support me and watch me finish. I've told them to emphasize the finishing part as thats adds a little pressure to push me. Anyway just wanted to thank you all for helping me with this journey whether you knew you were or not. One pedal/foot in front of the other..... |

Expert 1148 Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread There has to be a word for days like today. Did not feel like getting up. Didn't hear the alarm. Did not feel like warming up, did not feel like swimming, did not feel like running. some times you just gotta do it, even when you feel worn out and sore and tired. Just didnt' feel it today - there's gotta be a good word for that. Uggg. just doesn't express all of it. Now that it's all done though, I'm kind of proud of myself for getting it done though. Iron proud. -- think I feel more like putty though. Silly putty. Weekend: Sat 95 mi ride - part with a group, bricked with a four mile run. Sunday: 2 hr run 11 miles, followed by a 1.5 hr easy 'recovery' ride. Hot and sunny. Catwoman - careful out there. That was a little scarey, I'm glad you recognized it in time. hope you're feeling better today. There's probably a good lesson there for all of us to pay close attention to how we're feeling and adjust accordingly. |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Jasha - it's called "peak training"! I felt the same way yesterday. Did not want to swim at all. Got in to make myself. Swam 1500 yards and was going slow and form was ugly, so I called it quits. There will be those days. And since yesterday was that day and today is my daughter's volleyball game and yoga, yoga is ALL I'm doing today (to give my body a rest) so I can post my totals. The bike was down a little this month, but I missed 5 hours worth of riding the weekend of my son's out of town soccer tournament. It will go back up in September. Run this month is the biggest run month I've ever had, so I'm very happy with that, but actually scared to see what the next two months may look like. Swimming is what it is.

Veteran 158 Grapevine, Texas | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Happy with the past weekend's efforts. I did my long run last Thursday which was glorious because of a cool front blowing through. Amazing what a 10-15 degree drop in temps will do for you! Nice 8 mile run. Then, Saturday I completed my first century at Hotter 'n Hell. Not the day I had hoped for but I came away learning some valuable things. I used my 404s and the front tire had a slow leak the entire time and was probably only 50-60% inflated for over half the ride, despite airing it up 3 times. I probably should have just changed the tire (it's tubular). Followed up the ride with a 4.5 mile brick run and then an awesome 2 mile swim on Sunday! I'm really happy with the training right now. I wish my running was a little further along in distance, but I have to make do with a pesky shin that doesn't care too much for heavy volume. Better to go in a little undertrained than injured! I can't believe race day will be here in almost 2 months! eeeekkk!!! Count me in with the group of folks who's starting to get nervous and hoping that the training I'm doing is enough. |

Expert 1360 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I had a pretty good month here too. I missed only one bike workout and no run workouts. my back has been bugging me since I threw it out in early July. I finally made the connection in early August that it was due to swimming so I tried to cut back swimming to once a week, that didn't work so I cut it out completely for the last two weeks, and will try again tomorrow. Fingers crossed I will be able to swim again and it won't aggrevate my back. My one missed bike ride was the evening on the day of my last swim. By noon my back was aching, by 3 it was bad enough to go home from work (but I didn't - I had to wait for a co-worker to come back in the office since he was doing field work for me the next day). I had to take a muscle relaxant and figured that spending an hour in the aero position grinding it out on hills was not the best idea given my back. I missed a lot on the swimming front and missed a lot in July too (two week vacation in the swedish countryside). I'm starting to get somewhat consistent with core work to try to help my back heal and have had two appointments with an accupuncturist (this may or may not have helped, I can't isolate if it was from the accupuncture or the break in swimming). Overall I'm pretty happy with how my training is going and am looking forward to being able to get back into the pool. Looking at september I don't think my bike and run mileage will increase too much, but hopefully swimming will be back to where it should be (9ish hours since my coach has me swimming only 2 x per week)

Expert 1148 Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread For you folks who don't log your workouts, here's another reason you might want to. I was wondering how this month's run mileage stacked up to my previous months: You can do the same for each sport in either time or distance. Here's my totals slide: And then folks can also look and see what you've done that day and offer encouragement. You can evaluate your own progress and other folks can offer support. Looking at current volume over the last few months compared to my previous IM training helps me feel pretty good about where my training is today. Edited by jashac 2010-08-31 6:28 PM |

I missed a few workouts in August, because of the whole getting married thing. But it was still my highest cycling month ever. Asssuming all goes according to plan, September is going to be my biggest month yet. |

The run training was spot on, the bike wasn't bad but would have liked more. I'll probably never be accused of swimming too much! Jashac, you are right about the tools available here! Some powerful stuff if you use it, BT doesn't really do as good a job as they should highlighting what is available!! Good job everyone!! |
