Practice makes perfect.  This is close to IMLP set up.  Currently have a few hundred miles on it and I must say that it is the most comfortable tri bike I've ridden.

That's the most beautiful bike I've ever seen. I want to love it, and it love me back. But it's not mine. My Kuota would be jealous if it reads this post. Nobody better say a word. Rode 4 hours today in Z2 and did a short run after. Turned out to be a nice day in CT if you waited until after noon to go outside. Best to everyone.

Finished all my long stuff this weekend all indoors,  I was traveling today so I had to get my workouts in before my 9AM flights so I'm a little tired now.  Good thing it's a rest day tomorrow though now I have to work through all the logistics of training in a new state, without my bike.  The Y is only 5 miles down the road so I will probably run there, then swim.  I'll have to use the bikes in the hotel gym for the week so it will be a different kind of week for training for me.

that shiv is SWEEEEEEEEEET !!!!!!!

Like a bunch of the others I did Saturday's bike on the trainer.  This morning's run was in the mist but very pleasant.  Quick question for the "Finksters":  our run today says zone one or zone two, but if we are in the zone, is there such a thing as going "too easy" ???

Thats a pretty slick ride there, slicing through wind like nobody's business haha.

If you feel as though it is getting "too easy," you could always retest your HR zones.  It has been 13 weeks since the start of training so improvements are bound to have been made. (I've retested twice for the swim and once for the run)  I hate doing HR tests for the bike but it feels good where it is.

I don't really like retesting as it takes a lot out of you and can feel it the next day (for the run and bike), so i'd recommend only doing it if you really feel it has gotten to that point of "too easy."

I never actualy thought of doing a retest!!
Its my recovery week this week, you think its a good idea to do it this week?
How long should I go for the bike retest?

I ran on Saturday instead of biking cause it was windy and hard rain.
During 1.5hrs run, Ive started to develop blisters on my toes...  First they were burning then after the run I checked and 3 huge blisters on my toes.  Do I need new shoes?  Ive put in 300+miles on my newtons and the outside bar is starting to disappear.

Question to the veterans to this sport:
Today I did my 3:51hrs long ride and I averaged at 15.2mph with the elevation of 2200ft in 58miles.  I calculated it and if I stayed in that pace I would have finish the bike course in 7.5hrs.  So when you guys trained last year, were your average lower when you trained and its faster in LP due some down hills OR were your training pace much faster than your race pace in LP due to the long uphills etc etc.  Im sort of disappointed, it made me reevaluate my goals.

Thanks!

Tdotnew2tri - definitely DON'T be disappointed! Yes, my training average is slower than my race average this time of year for all sorts of reasons: fitness, starting/stopping for red lights, nutrition, potty breaks, its colder, course differentiation, fatigue (don't underestimate the taper), etc. I would not worry about it too much if I were you. Personally I don't think speed (average or otherwise) is a very useful metric to focus on for IM training anyway. It is impacted by WAY too many external variables to be useful, and a great way to blow yourself up. Focusing on other metrics (HR, Power, RPE, etc) are more useful. On long rides I look at HR and bracket it with power and RPE. On shorter hard stuff and sustained climbs I look at power and bracket it with HR and RPE. On top of that I almost always ride (and run) for time, not distance, and don't look at distance or mph while I am riding. I don't even have those data fields turned on on my computer. Everyone is different of course, but for the way my brain works they are the least relevant for my long rides.

Dude, it's March!  Lake Placid is in July - we have have 15 Long Rides and 15 weeks of mid-week rides to build bike fitness, and then two weeks to taper.  If you stay injury-free and train consistently, you will have more speed and endurance on Race day compared to right now.

As far as the Newton's, I've read a bunch of reviews where people claim to get only 250 to 300 miles out of them; which for me is not a lot considering the price tag.  And that's why I run in fifty dollar asics   But a good rule of thumb with running shoes is: when you think they're getting worn out and reaching the end of their life - THEY PROBABLY ARE!  Ditch them, or rotate them to the regular use pile.

To get more life out of my shoes, I always buy my running shoes in pairs and label them A & B.  Then I rotate them.  This allows the foams and materials to reform fully before each run and is supposed to lengthen the life of the shoe.

Thanks for the bike love.  I'm fortunate and ride w a great bike shop here in Rockland, NY (Toga Bikes) and they have taken great care of me.  From the day I decided on a new bike to the bike fitting and setting up the bike, they have been first class with so much insight into IM training, etc.

Unfortunately, that bike will not get me to through the 112 miles without training, but it certainly has provided motivation to saddle up!

I had another great weekend of training, even though it was a recovery week.  Saturday's ride brought me to the Perkins climb in Bear Mountain State Park and Lake Welch Drive climb on the way home.  2.5 hours of saddle time w 3200' climbing.  Sunday's run was also an easy paced, but with plenty of climbing.

I'm off of work during the April 9th week and really looking for a "training camp" type week and thought of heading to LP to get some miles in, which is motivating.

My question of the day:

What is motivating you lately?

How long should I go for the bike retest?

The link in the post takes you to how long and how to do the test.  But pretty much its as follows:

Bike test protocol:

The warm-up is 15 minutes of cycling, moving through the different gears, always keeping the cadence above 90 RPMS. Do a few short sprints to get your heart rate up and ready for the test!

You should start out in a gear that you can maintain 90 RPMS in. Make sure you remember what gear you started in.

  • The 30 minute TT begins.
  • At 10 minutes into the test, hit the 'Lap' button on your heart rate monitor, to get the average heart rate over the final 20 minutes of the test.
  • The average for the final 20 minutes is your Lactate Threshold or LT.
  • You should finish knowing you gave it everything you had.

15 minutes easy cool down.

Since its a time trial (TT), you're pretty much going near balls out to get your max avg HR for the whole 30 min.  Reason I hate doing them for bike is well... going balls out on a bike for 30 min means you'll cover a lot of ground, red lights make the test worthless, and to me it really hurts, more then the running test.  Remember also not to go "too" hard out at the start, you'll fade that much more near the end.

I didn't do mine during recovery weeks, wanted to keep those and reap them well haha.  The first day or so after a rest / easy day when you're fresh I found is good.

What is motivating me lately is wanting to finish my first IM with a fat smile on my face, and to try and share the experience with my family and GF who will be moral support along the way.

Also cause i like food.  Lots of food...

TOMORROW REST!!!

Oh man thank god for those rest days... This week is tapering for me since I have Oceanside 70.3 on Saturday.  Feel super ready for the swim, good for the bike, and I'm just going to be training through the run.  Going to try and mimic as an IM paced HIM so we'll see how it goes all the way.  Last time I got in the ocean (last week) it was 52... and that stung a little.  Hope everyone is having a good start to their week, and stay safe out there.

I have lots of motivation for Ironman training.  It's my natural sedative   The warmer weather and training outside surrounded by nature is very motivating.  A bunch of us do lake swims and I'm usually 2nd or 3rd across 1/2 mile-long lake, and I'd like to be first a few times this year - very motivating.  My smaller races are also very motivating - a Sprint Race where I finished 5th OA and I wish to move up 4 spots this year - super-motivating.  Beating my time at Rev3 from last year, also motivating.  But probably most motivating of all is BEATING RUSTY AGAIN - but this time fair & square since he'll stay on the bike this year.  Yeah, beating Rusty (Tankboy) is my biggest motivation!! Muha-hahahahaahahahahahahaha .... (i'm one-thousandth percent kidding

Where did you ride in CT to find that kind of elevation gain?

I'd love to see the route. I'm thinking of cycling up to the northwest corner of the state to check out Mt.Frissel/Bear Mountain...am looking for places to ride.

Unless of course Around the Bay is a bike race - then I will just be honest with you - that is not very fast at all.... Wink

Tankboy- it is true that I did not factor in those things mentioned above.  I was getting worried about things, that they may stay the same and that I may not meet the deadlines etc.  But as DC said we do have 15weeks!  I am following Finks plan very closely if not to the letter.  I have all my works in hours and heart rate.  What is RPE?  Ive actually been thinking about getting a powertap for next time but thats in the maybe list.  Anyhow, I will try this weekend again to ride with a computer that has no miles per hour.  Thanks for reminding me all those things.

Thanks!

Yes we have 15weeks! of hard and long work ahead of us!  I think it just occur to me because I was afraid I will not improve but 15weeks is a very long time!

Man I wish the asics that we have up here are $50! but they cost almost the same as newtons!  Im gonna look for a sale online.  I heard theyre trying to push out the old ones out as the MV2 just came out.  I do love the newtons!  I used to run with vibrams five fingers and ran my first half marathon and full marathon with it!  after 800miles of using vibrams, the soles arent really completely worn out.  I could probably have gone for another 400 miles before i see a hole in it.
