You know how we triathlete hope and pray for nice weather? This week we've actually gotten that in Buffalo. We went from 30s and 40s right to 60s and 70s! What a shock to the system for training. It has been super windy with plenty of rain but the temps make training outside again just amazing feeling. It's nice to feel some warmth in the wind round these parts! I know there are tornado issues all over the country lately so I hope everyone is staying safe! I've got 3 more days until a recovery week myself and I could use it... very soon.

Let me throw my hat in here...

1. Is this your first IM?

Yes, this will be my first.

3. What are your goals for the 2010 race?

Just to finish and enjoy some of it will be satisfying. Sub 12 wouldn't hurt either.

4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race?

Lake Placid is currently my hometown race. I live about 15 minutes from the starting line in Saranac Lake and work in Placid. If I only do 1 IM in my life, I can't imagine a more beautiful course.

5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc)

None at the moment.

Crazy weather up here, much like most of you are experiencing. I know it's not as bad as some of the tornado's and extreme flooding occurring elsewhere, but we are getting quite a bit of flooding

http://www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com/page/content.detail/id/524189/Essex-County-wants-state--federal-help-to-rebuild.html?nav=5047

Flooding seems to be affecting the notch by Whiteface and also by Jay (the far point on the bike course). Hope there isn't too much damage and the road will be fine by IM

On the bright side, Mirror Lake has (finally) thawed. Even some people swimming yesterday (can't imagine the water temp was much above 40 though):

RJohnson1979 - 2011-04-27 1:39 PM Anyone here find out they're in for the NYC Marathon?

I'd be shocked if I got in 'cause I didn't apply.

Haha. I didn't get in so was contemplating signing up for the Philly Marathon... but I've decided to give myself a little break after IM. I am signed up for an Olympic mid September but I think I'm going to wait and see what post-IM world is like before signing up for any more races this year!

Good man - my thoughts exactly.  I did not get into the NY marathon thro the lottery and to be fair, I am kinda happy about it.  I have the NY Tri 2 weeks after IMLP and think that a deferral is the order of the day....   If they do not take deferrals, I’ll walk it - hopefully with an IMLP running cap on and a big cheesy smile....   Olympic size - :-)

I wasn't planning, but my calendar unfortunately just opened up and I am looking for a Training Camp in Lake Placid in June. So far I found these three, but the price difference as you can see below is quiet big.

Any recommendations on how to choose one?

  • TriVault Ironman Lake Placid Training Camp           June 9-12        $375.00
  • Fireman Ironman Lake Placid Training Camp          June 17-19      $169.00
  • Coach Troy Lake Placid Training Camp                   June 16-19      $445.00

A friend of mine went to the fireman ironman camp last year and he said it was great.  Good on course support, good peeps and pro athletes are there for motivational talks.  I'm attending the May and June camps.  The more time on the course for me the better!

Thank you! Just registered for Fireman LP Training Camp in June.

Excellent!  Glazebal and I will be up that weekend training with a local group-maybe we can meet up!

I had a much better 'Marathon Experience' at Philly.  LOVED the Philly Marathon in fact

I'm thinking of doing the JFK 50-miler has my Fall ultra-Marathon.

That's awesome! Welcome and thanks for posting. It's great to have a "local" here! I'm getting excited to come up that way to visit at the end of next month. Hopefully the water will be warmer than 40. That's interesting about all the flooding too... hadn't heard about that!

I'm still thinking about Philly. I've done it twice and it is a really nice race. There are some tough spots here and there, but great crowd support and a beautiful course.

My egotistical issue is that I've done 3 marathons and PR'd each one, the last being 3:33 at Philly in '09. No way I'll hit that and I don't want to ruin my streak of posting decent gains 3 years in a row (4:10, 3:55, 3:33)

Haha. I normally would just medicate and go...the low grade fever and lower respiratory symptoms are holding me back a little bit though. It's non fun. I have a propensity for bronchitis and bacterial sinusitis...so I'm going to wait a bit. I have a certain resemblance to rudolph right now too....

I'm renting a set of Zipp 808's and want to have a separate cassette to use. Currently on a Cervelo P2 with the stock compact crankset and stock 12-25 in back. Not that I need to stay in the Ultegra group, but can get half off either a 12-25 or 11-28. This is my first IM so what are the recommendations here? I can go with a 12-27 Shimano 105, but Trisports shows it out of stock with no ETA (and that's my coupon lol). Thoughts? Would my gearing be to spread on the 11-28? I'm training in hills, but haven't seen the LP hills yet so unsure if I can keep cadence on the 12-25.

Hope you are on the mend quickly!

I am just getting over a nasty little case of bronchitis myself - I have been easing back in to training mode this past week, getting caught up at work, and trying to spend the rest of the time sleeping. I have my first real race of the season this weekend, and have definitely adjusted my goals for it after the up-and-down past few months I have "enjoyed." I have one more good week of work after that, then pretty much off for the summer to focus on LP - really, really looking forward to that!

Safe training everyone.

I did not look it up, but I think the big loss would be your 16 tooth cog on the both the 11-28 and 12-27 correct? When I run my climbing gears on courses that also have a lot flat, rolling, or false-flat terrain, I really miss that 14,15,16,17 bunch in the middle. Once I get over the 17, I don't really mind the big jumps, and I would go with the 28 if you think you are going to find yourself needing to just dump it. I *think* I am going to run a "blended" 12-25 (compact up front) where I have swapped the 12 for an 11. I have found the 12 way too easy to spin out on biggish descents with the compact and while I do not plan on pushing the descents at IMLP, I do like to keep a little pressure on the pedals. Ultimately that actually gives me a slightly higher top end than a standard crank with a 12-25, and a MUCH easier granny as well. I have ridden this setup on my road bike for years; I plan on doing some real mountain riding on my tri bike starting in a few weeks, and will make the final decision in about 6 weeks or so though.

Anyway, if that was of interest, you could get an 11-23 with your coupon (everyone needs one of those anyway - you know you are going to do IMFL one day....) and blend it with your existing 12-25 on your training wheels? But it sounds like you are really looking for more granny, not more top-end, so now I am just rambling.

1/2 off is awesome - you gotta buy something!

Hi!  I went to the IMFL banquet as one of my teammates was 4th in her agegroup, and my whole group was attending.  I liked it (the food was less than awesome) and I wanted to experience EVERYTHING for my first IM.  I plan on attending again.  My family didn't attend as they were already flying back home.  Every IM is run by different race directors, so I don't know how this one will go.  It is pretty expensive for a non athlete for a not fantastic dinner (In my opinion).  My husband has NO interest in the sport, so I was glad he didn't have to attend.

Hope this helps!

I went to the one in Couer D'Alene last year (it was my first ironman). I really enjoyed the experience - but the food was AWFUL.

All about the experience and I will go to this one as well.

last year they were sold out before I got to LP.....they did open it up later, but people had to wait in line to make sure they had enough room.

buy the ticket, decide later if you want to go to awards dinner.

can't see your logs or previous races, I don't think??

hard to give out advice without knowing what your time would on the bike; could get a good idea based on last years 1/2 results or other IM's you've done.

both cassettes could make sense; depends on how long you'll be on the bike.....

I use Training Peaks right now, but after my IM will be switching here for my logs   I'm off to ride 100 today in hills (6000 feet total vertical) so that should give me a better idea for LP.  I'm going to be conservative and say 6.5 hours on the bike.  I'm not tremendously fast, but consistent.

First IM (or half for that matter) so have nothing else to compare it to other than current training.  Only good thing is that all of the areas around me are hilly and with traffic and stop signs I'm consistently around 17 mph average.  Going to guess around the same in LP since I won't have to stop as much.  Hopefully will get to be closer to 6 hours by then

I'm generally running the middle gears, but have a few hills here that an extra gear wouldn't hurt   I'll look up the cogs on each to see what I'd be missing... I'm pretty certain I'll rarely get to the 12 (or 11 if I go that route) unless I want to keep pressure on my pedals during the Keane descent... but I may just enjoy the cruise knowing what's in store for later...

For all the money a race costs $30 seems reasonable just to buy it and if it doesn't work out it's ok. I'd like to 'experience it all' my first time around too. Sounds like a plan to me. It's funny how everyone hates the food too. Good thing I have to bring my own food to these sorts of things anyway. Hopefully the gf can stomach the food though!

April Totals:

Swim: 34000 yards

Bike: 444.19 miles

Run: 48.60 miles

Run totals are low due to dealing with my torn ACL. Due to some issues at the start of the month I was only able to do a few very short runs. It has been feeling much better the last two weeks allowing me to get back up to better training volume.

Stuck to the plan volume 99.999%, didn't miss any workouts but did juggle some around, and cut one bike short (though I went long on a couple too). Would like to see a 100 mile run month but I'm following the plan

April's totals:
Bike:24h 36m 41s  - 410.48 Mi
Run:12h 39m 36s  - 91.33 Mi
Swim:12h 03m 31s  - 33150 Yd
