Alright, so it sounds like I should break down and buy real books.  Wonder if B&N carries them or if I should just buy online.

Being an engineer, learning about power is kind of fun.  Plus, now maybe I'll understand the conversations in here!

Who needs a book when you have this group Tongue out.  Nevermind, just read the last sentence of your post as I was about to submit this haha.

Debating on whether to do a slightly longer sprint tri  .5k/18mi/4.9mi event or just do a 10K on September 7.  I have not swim since my son was born in late May but sure I could get through that pretty easily.  Just not sure how it would affect my bike and run and I hate going into events unprepared to do well although I miss the tri scene a bit.

The other option is a 10K just down the road.  It could be PR material if I can stay up around 35mpw these next few weeks.

What do you guys think?

The tri involves biking, so I'm going to say that one.

500 M is really swimming? Is that long enough to get the shampoo out? And Ryan, I think like twice into the pool before then and you'll be fine.

Hmm, you are right, I didn't look at the details that closely.  That race needs more swim, less run!

Ha.  I actually meant .5mi (750m).  I think it took around 12 minutes when I did the race 2 years ago.  It is a fun race and I was leaning towards it.  I guess I could get wet a few times before the race .

Yeah, I'd probably go with the tri too....but that's because it involves LESS running Tongue out

Hey Chris (or anyone else who has dealt with saddle woes), did you see that ST is doing a Saddle Tour at various local bike shops?  I'll be hitting up the one in Houston on the 30th....hoping I'll have better luck this time around than I did last time I tried to find a decent saddle.

First ride on the tri bike with the PM!!  (http://app.strava.com/activities/75104921)

Did a couple intervals at HIM RPE without looking much at the 800 to see whether where I thought my HR was turned out right and to see how that coupled to power.  Almost dead on what I would have expected (lower power per mph on those sections - I ride them frequently - and close if a bit lower per HR as compared to my road bike).

So, I'll still be racing mostly by HR this weekend, but I'm going to look at both and use the power reading to ensure I don't HAMMER any hills or the entrance to/tops of rollers.  Getting psyched now...

What was interesting is that my cadence, which has usually been just about 90 during road rides, was in the low 80's during the HIM efforts.  It has definitely felt like my ideal average cadence is lower for this kind of riding (no gut busters for Strava segments), and this was the first cadence data I've had that showed that's where I am.

As an aside, tapers ALWAYS leave me with both too much energy and leaden feeling legs, no matter what the sport.  Whassup with that?

Matt

ST Saddle Tour

I did, and they're at my local shop this weekend (I think).  Just too close to Whistler, and, frankly I need to ride it for several days to really know (although I like the initiative).  I.E, the sitero seemed to work for me after a ride or two, but eventually turned out to be torture.   Also, I can't really drill down on a saddle until I get my frame geometry issues sorted out.

So...  I had a strange masters workout yesterday.   I married two of the swimmers on the pool deck then we all got in and did our 3K workout!       I am a ULC minister and married another swimmer friend of mine (more of a formal affair), and this woman just didn't want a ceremony blah blah, second marriage, in her 50s.  She didn't even want to say anything, just get married.   So she emailed me asking, "remember when you were joking you could marry us on the pool deck, you wanna?"  So we did.

It was short and sweet, to the point, a few people we swim with watched from the pool, another couple swimmers from masters served as witnesses, and we had the little ceremony right on the pool deck!   We waited to change into speedos though. Attire was board shorts and flip flops!

That is weird.  Who on earth would want to get married on a pool deck?  They should have gotten on a bike and got married while chasing a strava segment.

Good luck at Timberman!  I have a few friends from here that are doing the race as well.

Thanks for the well wishes all!

Should be fun, at a minimum.  Weather is lining up nicely…  Very excited that I threw down for the HIM (he says before having ever done one).  Laughing

Had a scare yesterday as the carbon leaf spring on my right pedal cracked halfway through (ugh), but took it to FastSplits today and they wrenched on a pair of pedals to use (although NOT carbon - so I'll be several miliseconds slower over this course) while they send the Keos back - no questions asked.  Great folks there, if anyone is in the Boston area...

Now the bike is tuned up and ready to go.  All that remains in question is if the engine is, too.  Wink

WOOT!

Arend, rip off some legs this weekend!  Really curious to hear how the stage goes and what your strategy (intentional or in hindsight) is and how it works out.  Good luck!

Anyone else racing?

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
