Crappy run today.  Cut it short.  Just really couldn't get a handle on my breathing.  Someone suggested I might be low on iron cause I have been having dizzy spells lately (although that might be BP since I am low on a good day) but another symptom is having trouble breathing I guess.  So off I go to get my levels checked I guess.  I'm pretty much due for a physical anyways.

I just wanted to say thanks to this whole group. You all have a very down to earth, honest manner about your training and your interactions with each other.  For that I am grateful.

Fred, your question got me to thinking and the ensuing discussion actually helped me settle some internal questions I've been having.

Thanks everyone.

Yes this is a great group. What were your questions, and what did you settle on?

Fred, between your question and an earlier "hamster on a wheel" question from Kate, I have had a few things stirring. How do I improve and how much am I willing to do to improve? And how do I eliminate or stave off "burnout"? Those are the things that go through my mind lately. For me it equates to less high intensity training, less racing and more training for enjoyment. I believe that will be the formula for a long and enjoyable "career" in this. I do want to improve, but it is not my end all and be all.

I think many people get into triathlon to finish a bucket list item and once they have completed it, what else is there to do? Health and happiness is what I am after, so I have that as a long term goal.

This morning we had our 20 week ultrasound and have a baby boy due in June...so that was some great news at the end of a messy weekend.

Congratulations Ryan!

~5F out, and it wasn't bad. Running in the tights, however, was awful. Some type of leg trap, everything felt so slow. Long-course shuffle for run form. I'll be working on some better insulation for this weather. Of course we might be getting snow in a couple days and then it'll be 40 a few after that. Seriously, that happens about every time.

And this is all I'm gonna do today. Think I could ride, but some instinct is saying that might be pushing it.

Finally went swimming today- felt great to be back in the water. 2000 yds. 20 x 100s w 15 seconds rest. I came in b/w 1:40 and 1:45 for the first 15 then slowed to 1:55. But still happy with my swim since it's my first time in the water since last June.

You're slightly ahead of me, but we're in close to the same place.  I agree -- it does feel strangely good to get back to swimming.  I'm hoping that something approximating MOP+ speed returns before too long....

50 min run at -19C. Ice, snow, this sucks. I think I am going to go run elsewhere.

Ok, wish me luck folks.  I am going to go do my power test on my new trainer this morning, despite really being in shape to do it.  But hey, my numbers the next test will look like awesome improvement right?    I am kind of not really sure how I'll do as I think the pacing will be tough for me to nail down since I am not sure what I can hold on to for the full test right now so I'll probably slightly sandbag it so that I know I can hold on at the end and not fade too much

Good luck!  It always takes a few tests to get the pacing nailed right and you are right, that next one will make you feel like a superstar!

That's what I have in store for my run at lunch.  Except the -19 is with windchill for me, not actual temp...  brrr

I feel so lucky. Only -3 C actual. -16 with windchill for this morning's run. And I slacked off with just 30 minutes. I'm not sure if I want to drink my coffee or just crawl in the mug.

Do you do it with TR ? Do you do anything special to make sure tire pressure/roller pressure is consistent from ride to ride ?

-4F this morning (-20C), but I went swimming. Still seems weird getting into the water with the gigantic glass window/wall on the side of the pool area. It's even more weird when snow is blowing everywhere though.

I love our pool's large window, especially when the sun is coming through.
I was going to swim this morning but I took the time to catch up on some grading for class this morning. I will swim at noon, run before 3 pm, then take my little guy back to the pool to play at about 4.
There was not much hacking in our house last night, so I think we are all on the mend. I am hoping for no more illness this winter. We have paid our dues.

This is the horrible weather I had to deal with on my ride  Sunday. it was a bit cloudy and about 65 degrees. I wore my ear warmers. It reminded me of Wisconsin in September.

Those little sand piles in the field are beetle nests. They dig deep holes and leave sand piles in the grass.

Fun, yeah, that's what that was.  Yeah, using TR.  I even actually like their little messages.  I always check my tire pressure before getting on the bike, trainer or going out on the road.

I think I paced it ok but my legs for sure were the limiter.  I guess that is to be expected seeing as how I took a long break and all that running/strength training doesn't really help the bike muscle endurance much

Since you had so much fun with the 20MP Test I assume you will also be doing the 5MP test shortly as well LOL.

Got up early this morning to ride for 85 minutes on the bike with some long threshold intervals (50' total of threshold work).   I think it is harder mentally to actually look at the workout on paper and realize - ugh - not that!

Maybe the 3 degF and -8 windchill for my snowy lunch run will be better...not...I think this will be the coldest run I have ever done.  All the schools are closed today as the roads are horrible...time to throw on the yak trax.

Dragged myself out of bed this morning and could hear the wind - ugh, I want to go back to bed!  Then I though of Arend in -27C, and figured I'm tougher than him Wink, so I'll just HTFU.  Crap, it was cold, -12C, but -25C with the wind.  My face suffered a bit, but it was my thighs when I was straight into the wind.  They were stinging - when I got home, I realzed that parts were bright red.  So I think I may have gotten a little bit of wind burn.

Picked the wrong week to try and work on my run consistency....

My wife asked why I didn't think to run at the 200M indoor track instead.  I actaully forgot that it existed.

Quick question since we have quite a few arctic runners this week...is all smart wool created equal? Are there warmer options? My feet were pretty cold this morning. Was wearing one layer of smart wool under the all terrain Newtons. Normally I just wear cotton Balega socks until it gets into the 20's. Unless I buy a larger shoe, I don't have a lot of room for layering or the 'uber' heavy ski type socks.

Nice job Neil.  You made the right choice, the track would have drove you crazy.  When I run in the cold my belly for some reason gets really red, even if I dress perfectly and am not that cold.

What smartwool specifically? Their ski/snowboard socks are still rather thin next something like their hiking socks, but are noticeably warmer than running/cycling socks. I'll go with ski plus a running sock in this weather and have been fine. The extremities can also get cold if the appendage is not warm enough.
