Fred D - 2012-11-02 12:20 PMWeight discussions can get dicey on the internet so I don't get into them. I do follow the ST boards and enjoy some parts, but BT whenever I peruse them very much. I saw something idiotic where they cross linked an ST thread to discuss a prior Doper at Miami 70.3. Just go to ST and comment there I would suggest instead of doing it on BT would be what I would suggest. again just be careful about the weight discussions as people get hurt and upset quickly with internet communication on this one sometime....z
. Hey this was posted from my phone and someone just correctly let me know that it doesn't make much sense..... I was referring to a doping thread on ST about a known cheat in the Miami 70.3 event and surrounded that with a discussion about weight. Please DO discuss weight (carefully). I just hated the fact that someone takes the coward approach to reference an ST thread that is discussing a doper and posts it here. Discuss it at the source seems the better plan to me. I apologize for the confusion, but again I was posting from a phone (while driving). Kidding.....

I found that very curious as well.  If you have a gripe about a front page story on a forum not being legitimate journalism, why wouldn't you post your critique on said forum.  Odd...

Fred D - 2012-11-02 11:52 AM Weight.... Ok I will start off. I am 6' tall and used to weigh 210 lbs. I now weigh 165 lbs. I struggle with good food choices, I struggle with late night snacking, I struggle with eating too fast at meals. I also drink wine and aim to drink a little less as well. Definitely not an every day drinker, just realize that to be healthy everything has to be on moderation. So I have things to work at. To be truly competitive I would have to weigh 15 lbs lighter, but am not willing to make the sacrifices to do that as it would involve being hungry a lot. Weight is a challenge in my job as well as obesity is a real epidemic with many patients I see in central PA. Ok there is my story, thoughts? Who's next?

Weight: I'm 6'4" and weigh 175.  I was down under 170 right before my scheduled A-race in August.  Five years ago I tipped the scales at 235.  A divorce, and a reality check at an annual physical (cholesterol over 300) sent me down the weight loss road.  I didn't have any problem losing the weight, I feel very sorry for people who have a challenge doing so.  My weight loss is, from what I see, the result of two things: exercise (burning more calories) and vastly reducing my alcohol intake (reducing calories).  The alcohol reduction had nothing to do with a moral issue or even a an attempt to cut carbs.  It was entirely on how it effected my workouts.  I didn't like the way I felt swimming or running after having a couple glasses of wine, or beers, or scotch, the night before.  Some people can do it, I'm somewhat envious, I just can't.

Sometimes reading the post about weight loss I feel like a freak.  I rarely feel hungry, and most of the time I have to remind myself to eat.  I have a very hard time getting more than 3,500 calories in, and found the best way is to eat 5 or 6 times a day.

I have noticed that I have to watch my attitude about people's weight.  I need to be more sympathetic and appreciate the fact that not everyone can lose weight as easily as I have.  I do find that there is a tremendous double standard as to what's appropriate with regards to weight.  I have had many acquaintances say "Wow, you're skinny!" a couple even asking if I was sick or had cancer, while they would NEVER say to someone, "Dude, you're fat".

I'm 6'1" and currently about 168.  I was as low as 161 during training for IMMT.  Weight has never really been a big problem for me.  I think the heaviest I've been is about 182 and at the time I was doing zero exercise and not eating healthy at all.  Like Fred, I struggle with the snacking and I do like me some wine.  Although lately we haven't been having much, it kind of stopped while I was IM training and never really started back up.

I've had people tell me I'm too skinny.  I just say "No I'm not, I'm a healthy weight and if I wanted to I could drop another 10 lbs".  Most people drop it at that.

I know several people who struggle with their weight and want to lose some (or at least say they do).  I've offered advice to people (only if they ask) but unfortunately I think many are looking for the easy answer.

5'10, I am at about 172 right now. 165 last summer.

I saw 235 on the scale one day. I was more than that at one point, I just stopped looking.

I developed type 2 diabetes, that I have until this day and will struggle with the rest of my life.

When the doc diagnosed me, and told me I would lose eyesight and kidneys unless I did something about it, I did something about it.

Yes it's hard. But the consequences are even harder to deal with.

I will try and drop to 160 by next summer and then we'll see.

Fred / Byron / Arend....you are all skinny ;)

I'm 5'11" and 180 lbs (lighter in kilograms). I would like to race at 168-170, but that would require a big change on my part, one that I have not yet mentally committed to. I've never been told I was skinny, but I haven't been on the other end of that spectrum either.

For reference, I have no pics on hand - besides, my dog is much better looking than me, but here is the link to the race participant photos from B2B:

https://birdseyeview.net/cgi-local/ImageFolio42/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Triathlons/20121020_BEA/Run&image=BEA_R2140.jpg&img=&tt=&search=1491&cat=Triathlons/20121020_BEA&bool=and

In general, my wife just says I'm a bigger guy...large boned perhaps, particularly when compared (and therein lies the rub) to other triathletes. I'm happy with where I am, but certainly believe a little weight loss would go a long way in improving my race times.

I got into Tri's when I was just over 170 on a 6'1 frame.  I was lifting weights at the time and thought of myself as being in decent shape, but was also starting to feel the need for a bigger pant size and that didn't sit well with me.  I had no idea how out of shape I really was.

I started Tri training and the weight that I didn't need disappeared pretty fast.  I already followed a diet of eating 5-6 times a day and continue to do that now.  I know that I have a very high metabolism and my body type is very much that of an ectomorph.  I don't gain muscle easily at all - or weight for that matter.

I hit 147 this summer and that's eating between 3-4000 calories a day during HIM training (the thought of IM training scares me with how much I'd need to eat).  I'd like to try and add on about 7-10lbs over the winter, but I see no point in adding fat just to add weight.  So I'll lift some weights and see what happens.

5'6" and 160ish pounds currently.  In was in my best shape (body fat wise) in college where I was about 150 and could bench press about 275.  Did more weight training in my early 20's, but also drank and ate more but was using basketball to keep most of the weight off as I got closer to 160-170.  Once I started working full time, I played a lot less basketball and weight kept going up...till one day I was 200 pounds.

After 3+ years of endurance training, I'm back down to about 160, normally race in the 155-158 range, but still carry a lot of the muscle bulk from my earlier years.  I'd say for my height, I should be around 130, but I'm carrying about 15 pounds of excess muscle and 15 pounds of excess fat.  If I got down to 145 pounds losing only fat, I would be ripped.

So my goal is to get down to about 140-145, by losing some upper body muscle and fat.  I still battle poor food choices, snacking late at night, and eating too much at parties/get togethers.  In the end, it's a choice.  As much as I want to get leaner...my choices indicate otherwise.  Racing isn't everything in life, so as long as I'm happy and reasonably healthy, it's all good.

I have never had a weight problem but like many of you, I'd like to lose 5-10 lbs but just haven't done the work to do it. I did weigh under 120lbs when I raced IMAZ but I just couldn't eat enough during IM training to keep any weight on. I looked too skinny but IMAZ is followed immediately by Thanksgiving, so it was all good

I haven't noticed any decrease in performance since gaining a few lbs, actually I swim and bike better than before. I gained 10lbs last year when I had knee surgery and didn't workout for months. When I started trainign again, it didn't exactly drop off but has come off slowly at about 1lb per month. I carry a lot of muscle on my legs (for a girl), the rest of me hasn't changed too much. I recently started to pay more attention to nutrition and I have noticed a huge difference in how I feel. I use the Vega products for breakfast, it makes me feel like i am hitting some good nutrition early in the day. I do have a coffee and wine habit that I need to work on

I feel like this is AA.  I battle with food.  I have a huge appetite and am known for eating a lot by people who know me.

I played soccer and was lean until college. Couple years and realized I was getting fatter so started lifting.  Got into it with my friends and really took it serious.  When I met my wife I was in good shape.  Younger 20s, 5' 9" 175lbs and pretty lean.  I lifted 6 days a week and do cardio after.  At that point I was eating relatively healthy like a body building diet.  High protein, no carbs other than beer after lunch.  I had abs, could bench 315lbs for a few reps and was solid.

When my first daughter was born in 2008 I had gotten up to over 225lbs.  Just eating like a horse.  I lost the discipline.  I was about the same muscle mass but just fatter.  I decided to do triathlon.  I got back down to around 185lbs.  But, with it my diet never got better and I found the training to make me crave carbs a lot more so it is actually harder for me to keep off the weight I think than if I'm more focused on lifting weights.  It's kind of weird.

When I did the Ironman at 185lbs I vowed I wouldn't do another unless I took the race weight seriously.  I ended up running the philly marathon a few months later and had dropped a good 5lbs and was 178ish feeling much better running.  I realized then for me, I should really be a lot lighter if I'm going to take it seriously.

Then....job change, stress, ups and downs, rough 2012...I'm high 180s now.  Just trying to get more discipline.  When I do eat healthy, it does shed off very quickly. I just have not been for a long long time.   I also think I kind of just weigh above average for someone my height.  I'm not really fat but I don't see myself ever being 150something....unless I really lost a ton of muscle.  I'd love to try racing at 165 though.

You all who are talking about losing 5-10 pounds are just adorable.

And it may sound like AA, but for a few of us who have had serious food issues, there is OA, overeaters anonymous. I visited 10 years ago, rolled my eyes and left. I finally returned in 2012. I got a handle on things are starting losing again for the first. Half of he year. Time to get back to a meeting.

. I know what OA is. I have a lot of patients with eating issues. Truthfully any weight issues are tough, they are emotional and go to our core and self worth assessment. Whether its 5 or 100 lbs, weight is a tough topic. Support each other and recognize we all have issues to a degree. I know I'm a 'healthy' weight, but I think about my weight and wonder every day if I could lose more to be more competitive in races. My work has hurt my training enough so it's not realistic, but I still dream of winning age group. Yup I'm conflicted.

Here's the frustrating thing for me. I'd love to lose those 5-10 lbs that I keep talking about but I must have some sort of issue. I have a lot of discipline when it comes to training: I can run in the dark, ride in the wind, swim when it's cold etc etc. I rarely miss a workout but for some reason I just can't transfer that discipline over to eating. It has to be diet for me because I train consistently over 10 hours per week. I know the saying, you get fit by working out but you get lean in the kitchen. Or maybe in my case, I just need to stay out of the kitchen. Now that I type it, it does sound ridiculous to only have 5 lbs to lose but not be able to do it. Maybe I just need to HTFU and do it!

tri808 - 2012-11-01 6:53 PMSaris Cycleops has really good customer service.  I would give them a call and explain your situation.  I would be shocked if they didn't send you a replacement part free of charge.

x2. I've had great customer service from them. I hope you have the same.

Thank you both. I didn't think of that. I should have. I will give them a call and see what they suggest. They could send a replacement part, but it will also get mangled (eventually). I feel like I need a long term solution. I can't have been the first short person with a little person bike to have this problem. :-)

Not sure if you called them yet or not but I did a quick Google search and it sure looks like it should work with you problem.  I found lots of posts from people (including on BT and ST) saying it should just work.

Thanks. You are right; it should work. I must be doing something horribly wrong. I have an email into them. I could just hear myself trying to bumble my way through the description of the problem on the phone. That would not have been pleasant for anyone involved.

I can get a new cam lever and L bolt for about $10. That may be what they suggest, and then I'll need to watch the videos again carefully to figure out what I have been doing to mess that bolt up so badly.

It sucks sometimes to be in the middle of no where. I'm guessing I have one of the only CycleOps in the county (or two or three counties). Just one experienced rider visiting my house could probably help me solve this problem in about five seconds. :-)

Does anyone have any races left this season?

I do. I'm scheduled (but not paid yet) for a 25k next Saturday. I've been battling leg/hip niggles (that worm that someone mentioned a couple days ago), so I may or may not run it. The following weekend (the 17th) I am running a 10 mile Turkey Trot (registered and paid). I did it last year with my mom and middle son. I ran the 10 mile; they ran the 2 mile. My mother insisted that we do it again. And since I'm on the fence about the 25k the week before . . .

I have a cycleops fluid 2.  Maybe you can take a picture of your problem, and how the bolt is bent.  Could be it's not installed properly?  I could double check with how my bolt is installed and compare.
