Sorry that I have been AWOL lately. Been away for work for a bit and then flat out since I've been home.

Back into training tomorrow hopefully and then starting my 20 week Oly plan next week. Still not great weather here so I'm not really looking forward to swimming.

Janyne I really hope they have given you some fantastic pain killers and that your shoulder heals quickly.

Lots of tough stuff going on with the Manatees! Hang in there everyone!

Some pretty cool news, our guy won the ITU Para World Championships!

Ya better look out Yanti! As my coach said, "He had a very effective race plan. Win the swim. Win the bike and win the run."  Of course, I may have shared too many secrets at this point

Waiting around for my dentist appointment this afternoon. Besides wisdom teeth out when I was 14, I've never had anything done to my teeth. Little nervous.

In other crash related news, watching the color progression of my bruises has been entertaining. They're in the greenish yellow phase right now...except for inside my mouth. That one is still dark purple.

Mak and I were doing animal flash cards last night, and I came across a most unflattering picture of us.  What were they thinking?

Wow, a bit of a mixture of experiences for the racing manatees this weekend.  Some solid efforts and good finishes (Tom, Judi and Kirsten), some crashes (please heal quickly, Janyne and Erin) and a DNS.  Yup, that would be me.  Super condensed version (longer version is in my blog): I had to rush home from DE Sat. evening because one of my dogs, Coco, seemed to be very ill and in the opinion of DH, near death.  Turns out she has a musculoskeletal injury in her neck region, which is apparently a very painful injury for dogs.  She has drugs and is on restriction and is making small improvements, so I'm optimistic she'll keep improving and not require follow up visits or surgery or anything like that.  *fingers crossed*

Oh, poor coco, I'll keep my fingers crossed for her!

Hope your pup's feeling better soon.  It's always so scary when the fur kids take a turn for the worse!

How's poochy feeling? Are the crossed fingers doing their job keeping the improvements coming and the vet visits at bay?

Oh and finally, finally I feel like I have rounded a corner in training and am starting to actually improve rather than flailing my way through every day.

I think a lot of the struggle was doing both running and mountaineering/hiking. I am  going to summit Mt. Adams (12,276') on the 21st- 22nd after having my first cross country race on the 21st. So, it should be a big weekend!

Obviously I've got a lot going on so my check-ins tend to be less frequent but you can always see what I am up to by checking my instagram. I have a creative goal of posting a picture a day so I tend to be pretty good about it.

Awesome! I think you will love it. We are excited to run that one...someday.

Vast improvement from how she was on Sat/Sun.  I stopped her pain meds yesterday but of course she needs to finish out her prednisone.  She, much to her displeasure, is still on restrictions from running, jumping, stairs, etc. so she spends the day in her crate and is lifted everywhere (couch, down/up stairs) when we are home.  Of course, the little stinker occasionally will jump up on something before we can lift her up.  Although she's not supposed to be doing that, I do take it as a good sign that she feels good enough to do it even though she doesn't realize she's not supposed to!

I'm getting excited about my race this coming weekend.  They shortened the run from 6.2 miles to 5 miles, oh darn.  So 1 mile swim, 19 mile bike, 5 mile run, yeah!  The weather is looking good, too.  Thankfully I think the swim is still held in the back bay, which is good because there have been rip current warnings the past few weeks, this week included for the ocean.  Plus the Seafood Fest is going on at the same time, yum!

Sounds like a good solid tri there! Gee, sorry about that run ... and also good news about Coco. I don't know anything about jumping onto or into things prematurely, though.

Big weekend indeed! Have a blast. It's worth having big experiences (i.e., everything you do) at a small occasional cost of not  having what might be ideal results in some areas. That said, great news about running and I'm sure you'll revel in being able to focus and immerse yourself in it more fully soon.
Pssssht, my parathletes will beat yours ... if it's a downhill course and they're in wheelchairs. Considering that neither of them uses wheelchairs, maybe not :P

Super congrats to him. Amazing!

Sounds wonderful but so sorry to hear about that run.  I can tell you're really disappointed.  Seafood - mmmmmmmmm.  I'm jealous!!

What a relief to have Coco feeling better.  Bet that's a huge load off your mind.  Here's hoping for continued fast improvement.

Personally, I'm starting to think that we need a smudge pot for the group to cleanse the group.  Teeth and shoulders (not just mine) and canine illness and all other Manatee woes, BEGONE!

One handed typing sucks.

You're amazing at it like you are most things ... I just typed that with one hand and it really doessuck. Especially for you, in your line of work, which I along with the others can't believe you're back at already. One handed and all.

Definitely not a "it could be worse" statement, those suck worse than one handed typing (see what I did there?) ... Kingsley's mom had her dominant arm amputated at the shoulder last year (she's in her late 70s). It's pretty amazing how well she's adapted and all the ways she finds of doing things, everything, cooking, writing, etc. She even Facebooks and takes care of a big foster dog.

That's just to say I hope too much stuff isn't frustrating for too long and you manage to get by more quickly than you expect. It's just UGH all around.

P.S. Silly story--last year I brought small gifts for all of Kingsley's family for first meeting them. His mom thought it was so awesome I'd wrapped hers in a way she could undo it with one hand (I did all of them that way). I didn't have the heart to tell her it was really because the only tape we had at Kingsley's was duct tape

Yes, I know that it's good that I am right-handed and the left shoulder is the injured one.

I still the smudge pot or whatever though.

I agree.  There's been more than enough difficulties going around.

I feel a little guilty about this, but I'd like to acknowledge a couple of anniversaries that show the resilience of the human spirit.  Yesterday was the anniversary of 8 months since I was so seriously thinking of killing myself that I asked DH to lock up all the meds in the house.  You all can see where I am today - far far far from that. Thanks, Manatees.  You've been a big part of my coming back to life.

Also, Monday was the anniversary of my brother's nervous breakdown that resulted in 3 days of catatonia, 3 weeks in a psych ward, and me being named his temporary legal guardian because his wife wasn't able to handle the responsibility.  He's now happily living with her and has a full-time job, an apartment and a beautiful 4-1/2 mo. old daughter.

It all just makes me think, "This too shall pass", even if it doesn't seem like it ever will when you're in the midst of the muck.  Hang in there, mucked-mired Manatees!!!  (smudge, smudge)

SO glad to see Janyne back and active in the forum, even if it is one-handed!

Chris, good to see you peek your head in here, too!

Yanti and Mary, thank you for the uplifting stories.  I believe most humans are very resilient and can weather more challenges than we realize we are capable of, when put to the test.  Mary - glad you are still around, the world would be less interesting without you!

Erin - keep healing.  Bruised inside of mouth?!  Eek!  Good luck with the dentist.

Very, very cool that you can share that here.

It takes a lot of courage to do so and I believe it is extremely important for ones self and others to share experiences. You never know who might be having a similar struggle.

I think it's incredible how physical activity- triathlon or other can play such a huge role in helping come out on the other side.
