At the same time, I need to remember that it's important for me to have my own identity and things going on outside of her. It's tough! But, I want to be a good role model for her, and that includes spending some time focusing on me. There are so many things I am amazed and inspired by from my mother, but the fact that she spent a great deal of time tromping around Indonesia going where no white person (never mind woman) had gone before and becoming an expert on Indonesian cultural heritage (no mean feat; we have hundreds of distinct cultural/ethnic/language groups here) still and will always have a profound impact on me ... it meant she was gone a lot during my school days but I don't miss that time at all, and when she was there, she was really THERE. Your mom sounds like one of the most amazing people. Every time I hear more about her, it's fascinating!! Clearly, we need to send Mutti a package for raising you to be the amazing person you are. |

I don't give my mom enough credit. Even though we clash on A LOT of stuff, she has really shaped a lot of the qualities about myself that I value. She was/is such a unique individual. She is always on the lookout for fun and adventure and has been as long as I can remember. Since becoming a mom, I've learned that I didn't give my mom nearly enough credit. I don't know how she managed to give my brother and I everything she did. I never knew growing up that my parents didn't have a lot of money. It didn't feel that way. They always took care of everything. Looking at it now, I feel kind of bad and want to try to make it up to them. |

Above all, she's survived 53 years with my dad and the three particular children she had (me being the most boring and easygoing of them, yeah, think about that one!) She is feisty. And I can think of a thing or two she would looooooove to get in a package I am really looking forward to our trip to Germany this late spring/summer. Mostly it's because it'll be the last time she CAN go and therefore probably the last time she'll see her brothers and their families, but also because I promised I'd write her story and it's also a post-con (as opposed to recon) trip to visit places of her childhood and get the feel (for me, as an adult) about what it was like for very poor civilians growing up in wartime Germany. |

That is the end game for this, although mostly I just want my mom to be able to read the manuscript while she's still able to comprehend it. While I can only vaguely know how much that would mean to her, I understand that it's on the level of "means the world" or "everything." |

The first rest day I've had since I was sick on the day after Thanksgiving. It felt kind of weird. I didn't like it much. We are trying not to get sick here. My middle son stayed home today, and all of the rest of us are coughing, but I am hoping it doesn't turn into much. The little guy and I both had flu shots, so I am hopeful. I'm planning to run four miles this afternoon before spin class at 4:30. Healing/healthy prayers for you and the fam. Hope the rest day was... restfull. Running outside? How is the weather there? Frigid. The boiler in my classroom building went down over the weekend, so it was as cold inside as outside. They got the boiler going, and it warmed up in some of the offices and the halls, but our classroom never warmed up. The radiators were still ice cold. We were all wearing gloves, hats, scarves, if we had them. Who knew that dry erase doesn't wipe off of an ice cold white board. Just one of the delightful things we discovered this morning in our arctic classroom. It was crazy. And it's a 3 1/2 hour class!!! Still got my run in. It was about 28 out. I'm ready for this to end. I feel like a cold weather wimp. |
