So what does everyone do for heart rate monitors?

Does anyone have a good watch/monitor pair to recommend?  I don't need it to have GPS.

My Garmin 405 has a HRM.  I would recommend it for the heart rate and GPS functionality, but the watch is absolutely terrible.  I'm switching to the 210 when I get my REI rebate because it has actual buttons and not the stupid bezel thing.

I bought a 405 off a friend - never used it, I cannot work that Bezel contraption at all.  It just doesn't work.

It was the stupidest design ever.  My husband's tried to borrow it a few times and can never get it to work.  I can at the start.  Once I start sweating, it's over.  Plus, it's gotten more finicky as it's gotten older.  Ugh.  Should have a new one in April.  I already have it picked out

My bike fitting was pretty interesting.  I spent a lot of time on the mechanical/adjustable bike.  I would spin for a while, and then he (Bob) made adjustments.  Bob would make a little change, have me peddle, look at my posture, and read the data from his attached power meter.  He made interesting comments about my posture, tagging me as a runner.  He said my legs and lower back were pretty tight.  He ended up putting a spacer under my left cleat, which makes sense, because that's the foot that has the spacer on my orthotics as well.

I must say, it was awful fun to have someone to talk tri with for a while.  That doesn't happen normally.

So after I spun for a while at the settings he wanted, I got off the machine, and he started making the changes to my bike.  After that finished, he asked me to take it for a spin outside the shop.  Sure, but there's no lighting outside, it's 27*, and I'm in bike shorts and a T.  So I rode it around the parking lot a few times.  He asked me how it felt, and I responded, "Cold!"

Anyhow, I was afraid I was going to hear that my frame was to small.  It's not.  I'll prob need to get a new seat in a bit.  I'm looking forward to testing out the fit, bars, and the cadence computer.  I know these three things will make a HUGE difference.

It also turns out he coaches the guy who got arrested in Abu Dhabi, and a few other pros.  Interesting...

File that one away for the future, it's great to find a good coach.

Very true.  It would be awful fun to go all out and be coached sometime while I'm still single and have the time.  I'd love to explore my potential.

Yes! Do this and then report back to us old married folk

No pic of the big grin after bike fitting? You know you were smiling ear to ear. My DH loved when he got to take his bike in!

Hey Tom, I have a Timex Ironman thing which I do not like at all. It does have a lap function that might be good for swimming if I could work out how to use it.

I used to have a Polar, I think it was a 6 which I loved. But it died on me and no-one around here stocks them any more hence the Timex.

Neither of mine have had GPS as I don't think that it's really warranted just wanted calories and heart rate really.

Thank you all for the advice and kind words.  6.6 miles later, I feel better.

Sorry I got so amped up... I am not one to worry about things that I can't control.  I will be VERY disappointed if there is something (legit) in my background that would prevent me from being hired for this job.  It is a job that I am sure I would be great at.  I know I tested high through the first 2 rounds, possibly in the top 5%...definitely in the top 10%.

Anyways, I'm calmed down now.... Thanks for letting me vent.  I'll keep you all updated.

P.S. - you now all now know a lot about me.. (credit score, tax history, bankruptcy, divorce).. I feel closer to you already.. LOL  You have probably figured out that there is no shame in my game.

Have a great night everyone.  Look out Chianti, here I come!  (ha ha Jo, you can't have any!)

Chad, I second the words of wisdom from Ann-Marie. There are a couple of factors that we look at in the Financial Industry other then criminal record when hiring. If it is a credit check thing or something such as a bankruptcy or IRS deal, well Tracy is right, a discussion with the HR people will go a long way. When we find a cadidate that we like, we are generally willing to give them a chance. I would hope they are the same.

Good Luck and I hope the Chianti did the job!

Much like a few others here, I train naked. No HRM, I use an old Timex watch, no power meter on the bike, etc.  I have spent the better part of 2 years trying to understand what my body is telling me.  The last thing I need is more data to process.  I am in awe of the number crunching, gadget using folks. I know I would be overwhelmed at this point, but if you are going to go that route, I'd love to see what you are able to get out of it.

Good Luck!!

Oh yeah, I had the opportunity last year to watch Starky up close. The dude is intense! One of the best learning experiences I had was volunteering at a race last year and being able to watch the pros. Seeing the desire, mind games, intensity and physical ability was really cool. Bonus was that I got to see Ann-Marie race as well. A very good day indeed!

Heya manatees!  I had PT this morning.  My therapist found a muscle knot on the top of my illiac crest.  We're working on helping my core get stronger and my back, which seems to also be helping my hip.  She makes me work way too hard!  My hamstrings are so sore.

Think I'm going to back off from running for a few weeks.  I biked on the stationary bike today during PT and didn't aggravate my hip at all.  So maybe biking and yoga for awhile?  I'd swim, but that would require paying for a pool and I don't want to do that quite yet.

Jen, I really hope that your body heals up, you have been working through some challenges lately. I have found that stretching really helps me, as does rolling my muscles with a ball, and I have some yoga like stuff thrown in as well. But watching me do yoga is like watching a moose swim. The job gets done, but it ain't pretty!

You buried the lead story Laughing

I use a 310xt.  I have the heart rate monitor version, but almost never use it.  When I do it's just a curiosity thing - I look at the numbers after the workout and say, "hmm, isn't that interesting".  That's about all I get out of it as I do not know what my zones are!

I've done criminal checks in Colorado (where I lived for 12 years) and Washington (where I live now)... Nothing there.

I did a search on the National Registry for Sex Offenders..... Nothing there.

I lived in Oregon, but their public records are not available online... have to fill out forms and it takes 7-10 days to get them.

Really hoping that someone can do a National Search for me (since I'm sure that's what the Police Department I am applying with does)  I need to know if someone with the same name did some sh*t that is mixed in with my record.  I can't think of anything else it could be.

I'm pretty sure I've sprouted a couple more gray hairs in the last couple of hours.

Don't think there is anything else I can do now... going to go for a run, then I'm going to open a bottle of Chianti I've been wanting to try.

Update - I figured out how to do an Oregon Search...Still says it will take one day.  I will be emailed the results.

In Florida, you can get your criminal history from either the Sheriff's department or the Florida dept of law enforcement . The Sheriff's office way requires a trip to the office, but you will get the results handed to you. The FDLE way can be done on- line. I don't know what the Oregon equivelant to FDLE is, but I'm sure you have a Sheriff's dept ( don't you?), so you could check with them. Also, I know most law enforcement agencies also run credit checks on prospective employees and won't hire someone with poor credit. So, you may want to check your credit report.Good luck.

My credit is not great, but it's not horrible.  Was just approved for a $24,000 auto loan with a decent percentage rate.  I purchased a car 2 weeks ago (only spent $17K of the loan).  My house in Colorado still shows on my credit report as me being liable for the loan, even though the house is no longer in my name.  That was the only issue in my credit report.  My FICO score is in the low 600's.  I'm rebuilding post bankruptcy (discharged over 2 years ago) / divorce.  Maybe it's the bankruptcy.  She made it sound like it was criminal, but she said "I don't know what it's for" a couple of times.  Sounded like she slipped and told me something she wasn't supposed to.

The only thing I can think of is I owe the IRS some taxes from when I owned a business in 2004.  I have never not filed my taxes, and that has been dealt with.  I can't imagine that would be it...but who knows.

All I know is that in the application process they listed the things that would automatically disqualify you, and I had no issues with any of them.

I hate that any prospective employer could use credit as a basis for not hiring.  What does that have to do with my ability to show up on time and perform a job?

I also hate that auto insurance companies can use credit as a factor in determining risk.  I have no tickets or accidents in over 10 years and yet because my credit is not perfect, they can charge me more than someone that has better credit.  Ridiculous.

I know it's crazy. I think the thought process is in law enforcement people are in a position to really affect people's lives - for the good or bad, and if you have financial issues you may be open to payoffs to look the other way or otherwise do things you shouldn't for a little extra cash.I'm not saying this is what the issue is or that law enforcement agencies in your state are like Florida ones, so don't freak out with this info. Again, speaking to HR could clear this up .

I appreciate the possible explanation.  I am very much a "why" guy.  Once I understand why, it is easier for me to process.  This explanation makes sense as a plausible reason why they would look at credit history.   I may not like it, but at least I can understand it.

I will take your advice, and I will call the HR lady back on Monday.  They don't work Fridays.  I will try to escalate it to the "director" that she said is reviewing my record.  I did ask her to email him and explain that I'm happy to answer any questions he has and clear this up.  I asked her to explain that if it is anything "criminal" then it has to be a mistake.  I would be much more comfortable speaking to "Richard" (that's the directors name)...than relying on someone to do it for me.

All that being said....if it is credit, or the IRS thing...that would really suck to not even get the chance to interview.  I am very proud of my honesty and my integrity means the world to me.  I have left good paying jobs because of integrity.  I will not lie to make a sale, and I never sacrifice my integrity to make a dollar.  If I did, I could be very rich right now (story for another day).  I drive a Jetta (a turbo diesel that I absolutely love)... clearly I'm not (cash) rich.  LOL

Thanks again.

So what does everyone do for heart rate monitors?

Does anyone have a good watch/monitor pair to recommend?  I don't need it to have GPS.

I have a Garmin 305 but really only use the heart rate monitor to get virtual power on TrainerRoad.  The majority of the time I forget to put it on when running or biking (outside), probably because I also go by feel and don't know my HR zones and whatnot.  The Garmin gets used to watch pace/speed a little, but I really don't rely on it or look at it much while running, moreso while biking to keep track of mph/distance.  I mainly like that it keeps track of what I did.

I cannot wait for February to be over, I need some wine!  Why did I do this dumb giving up of alcohol and chocolate for the month - incidentally I gained 4lbs doing that and training my azz off.  WTF.

Less than a week now!

@Chad -- sorry, no help to you.  I can only imagine that someone with a similar name has been very bad.  We kept on getting calls from a repo man because we had the same last name and same town (no relation).  That went on for a very long time.  :-/

Ridiculous.

Would your ex have done anything stoopid?

Nice!  I think that you will be amazed at what a big difference these small adjustments will make.  Go Tom!  Go!

So what does everyone do for heart rate monitors?

Does anyone have a good watch/monitor pair to recommend?  I don't need it to have GPS.

I have the Garmin Forerunner 310 which I both for biking and running.

If you go the HRM route, be sure that you do your zones for both biking and running.

You might want to check out DC Rainmaker's guide as well.

No - we have a very good relationship.  I have a funny story about that, but I'll tell it another day.

On one hand, I am hoping it is a mix up with a different Chad with the same last name.  I know there is a guy with the same name that murdered his father in North Carolina...but since they search with D.O.B. and SSN - that should never come up.

On the other hand, I hope it's something as simple as they don't like my credit history....

So confusing, but overall I hope it's a mistake with criminal records or something, because I really want this job.  I can fix criminal record mix ups, whereas there is nothing I can do about past credit history.

I see this as a "career" opportunity, not just another job, and I know I would be good at it so whatever it is, I hope they at least give me an interview.

We shall see.  I'll call the HR lady on Monday and I'll post an update.
