And if you have a budget and that's all you can afford what do you choose if fit isn't an issue? (Sorry to change the subject but my heart needs a diversion from Boston and other tragic stuff that has happened in our family over the last 6 months. My BIL was killed in a horrible farm accident in September and last night I found out that his son has been admitted to hospital after having a nervous breakdown, he is 30 years old. I don't know what to do to help.)Artemis - 2013-04-17 2:08 PM ukweeble - 2013-04-17 12:29 PM jmkizer - 2013-04-16 11:56 PM StaceyK - 2013-04-16 6:30 PM So if you have narrowed it down to just these 2 why don't you go back again this weekend and ride just these two and see which one you feel better on, be it because of colour or fit or both combined. I have a Giant Avail 1 which is the women's version of the Defy, being the lower model it has a mixture of Sora and Tiagra components on it. The gearing is Tiagra and while it isn't supa smooth it works well enough for this BOP girl. Maybe if I ever do a HIM I will look at upgrading, but I got to finish studying before I can't even think about that. Come on Stacey! That makes way too much sense! Sounds obvious but the bike shop had neither in stock in my size (extra midget), so i could only test their slightly more exotic bigger brothers which use the same frame but different components and colour schemes. Ultimately i do have to look at price as i will also have to add a few goodies/necessities such as trip comuter and water bottles and poss tri bars so here is the breakdown of actual cost to me including the relevent staff discount. Excluding my add ons. Focus 2.0 SL with Ultegra £568 Focus 3.0 SL with 105 set up £511 Giant Defy 1 with 105 set up £500 Giant Defy 2 with Tiagra £400 My target was £400 but the Defy 1 is looking good value now i have them all written down like this. Who needs a water bottle anyway? I like having the best components you can get. I'm also curious if there is a difference between the two different frames. While I agree with you that I'd go with 105 or Ultegra, given the choice, if the frame doesn't fit, that can only be fixed so much and if it's uncomfortable, well, you have yourself a £500 cloths rack. Both frames are aluminum and the Focus has a carbon fork. The Focus has an FSA Gossamer and the Giant has a Shimano R565 crankset. Both are 50/34 (compact). Crap, sorry Stacey. I think that is the hardest part, not being able to help. I'm glad you asked that question though. I have tried to read up a fair bit on bike components over the past year. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think as far as components go: Sora I have Sora. It works. Made sense for me on my first bike. I don't know the functional difference as a newb. I'll prob upgrade on my next bike though. Funny story about how I was just about to pay $300 more for the 105 bike, but then the salesman talked me out (at Performance) so I could wait to utilize the "double points weekend". And that's how I didn't spend $300. Works for me! Edited by ponderingfox 2013-04-17 8:08 PM |

And that's how I didn't spend $300. Works for me! Couldn't have said it better myself. Both bikes feel nice to ride so i don't think fit is an issue. The Focus is described in the cycling magazines as 'more like an old school racer position' whereas the Giant is more of an all rounder, but my positioning on both bikes felt similar so i don't have an obvious winner from that. I don't understand the difference in the cranksets (FSA v Shimano) and i know that the wheels can make a big difference to the quality of the set up, but again don't know which is better - Giant P-R2 double wall rims, sealed bearing hubs, DT Swiss Competition butted spokes wheelset or the Concept EX fitted to the Focus. The Giant Defy 1 has been voted the best 'sub £1000 bike of the year' in Cycling Plus, which i also believe put the Focus in the test. Giant also won the overall Road bike of the year with the Defy Advanced 2 so they are on a roll at the moment. BTW, the shop i am buying from is http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ please feel free to browse. Most stuff under £1000 could be put on my list. Edited by ukweeble 2013-04-18 1:35 AM |
