What's with the ear plugs? Does that help keep you warmer? I grew up a swimmer, but a pool doesn't typically get down to 58 especially when it is inside and is regulated. So I just want to make sure I am prepared and don't start the race off on the wrong foot.

last time out I came back dizzy from (i'm guessing) cold water in the ear ( also I had no cap on.

Even in the pool I go with ear plugs, just something I've always done. Also when people ask about sharing a lane I pretrend I can't hear them

should I be worried about the cold..what to do.. i got a sleeveless wet suit.. and no cap.. I would imagine that race has normal swim caps.. but just the cheap thin ones.... I havent ever swam in that cool of water before and have NO idea what to expect... being from MN .. i should say I am used to the cold.. but prolly not.. huh..

Fair enough. I was just wondering.

I have been swimming since I was a kid but never swam in this cold of water. I imagine I will treat it like I did every May when I had to get into the outdoor pool. Whine and cry like a baby about it, then when push comes to shoove just get in and do it. Hypothermia? I won't have time for that Haha.

I might have to try this ear plug thing. That is a good idea.

The roads are starting to get marked, I walked down to the tran area this morning and main street had the orange arrows ; potholes , sewer grates were marked as well. Tents are up , it's getting close.

I am super stoked. Just hoping for some good weather. I already did Rockford this year in thunderstorms/high winds. Kinda hoping for you know, perfect weather!

today is the first day i'm starting to get nervous.

my husband isn't going to be there with me for this race. and i'm FREAKING THE EFF OUT.

It was starting to look like I wasn't going to be able to do the race due to lack of transportation. I'm just eternally thankful that my friends are going to be driving me there from Chicago at 4am on Sunday. Anyone know what time transition opens/closes before the race?

No clue...and you are correct, transition closing time is NOT in the guide.  I've read that thing about 10 times.  Guess we'll have to find out at check in.

I agree - didn't see it on the website.

Looking at my race report from last year -- transition opened at 5am, and by 6:30 I was walking down the beach... soooo... not sure what actual time transition closes, but I'd guess 6:30-6:45 with the 7am start.

Thanks, Laura! This ballpark is just what I needed. I think leaving Chicago at 4 will get me to transition around 5:45...so I should be golden. Hopefully there won't be an insane amount of race morning traffic.

Were they marking the potholes with bright paint to point them out?

Well, when persons swam the English Channel years ago, didn't they use vaseline or some kind of grease as some kind of protection?

Yes and even some big expansion joints/cracks, seemed to mostly at the intersections where they had arrows to spray down, otherwise some stretchs would have been all orange.

About 20 minutes before your wave kicks off submerge yourself in the water for a bit to get your core temps down. If you don't do this, you risk having that "oh my god the water is so cold it takes my breath away" moment. I did this in Galena and it certainly helped. But I still had a craptacular swim in Galena. I fair much better in warm water. So I'm anticipating a not so great swim. I'll be lucky to break 52:00, I think.

Vaseline could work, but then you'll risk having remnants on your skin for the other disciplines. So think about the mess factor there. And of course, peeing in your wetsuit can help, too.

Just remember...we're all out there experiencing the same nasty freezing temps together. So you're not alone. And you definitely won't be the only one who is in a sleeveless wetsuit.

Oh...and...try not to obsess over it the next few days (easier said than done though).

You can't change the course and you can't change the conditions. Just because it's cold or hilly or hard or rainy or humid or whatever, doesn't mean you're NOT going to go out and get it done. Because you are...because that's what triathletes do.

Just want to point out that you don't want vaseline anywhere near a wetsuit. Petroleum products will break down the neoprene. You also don't want to use petroleum lubricants with, say, latex.

In our home it's called Cross-Training.

And good call, Scoobysdad. I forgot that little caveat.

I'm with you. Not only am I now getting nervous, my first HIM, it looks like my husband will not be there either. I hate doing a race and not having him waiting at the finish.
I'll be staying at my mom's in Libertyville the night before to cut down the drive.
