Last night was my last bad meal - it was disgusting, onion loaf, fried shrimp, fries, and 2 margaritas .. I left the meal sick to my stomach. A perfect way to start the no sugar diet!

So I am starting this morning...

Started out with two soft boiled eggs and a slice of ezekiel bread. No sugar in that meal! Yay.

If you haven't tried it, try some Ezekiel products. I have the cereal in front of me, and the ingredients list doesn't even include sugar or any sugar product.

The official Start Date is Sunday December 21st Midnight.

Just to be absolutely clear, is this the Midnight the morning of  December 21st or the evening?

I'm thinking it's AM, but I had been assuming all this time it was PM. I have a family party on Sunday and I was hoping it would be my last hurrah, but I guess it'll be my first challenge.

AbbieR - 2008-12-18 4:52 PM Last year I was very strict with no sugar/no processed foods for a few months and I found that after a while the cravings go away.  I think it also changed my sense of taste.  For example, I was chewing a piece of sugar-free gum and it just tasted like chemicals to me and I spit it out.  I won't be chewing gum this time around!

I just hope I can make it to the point where the cravings go away.  In the past month, at my longest, I lasted 5 days.  On day 5, I had a headache, was irritable, and couldn't focus/felt off.  I swear it was withdrawal.  I am really hoping the support of this group can help me get past that point.

That was my problem, too, when I tried getting rid of soda last year.  After about 6 days, it was torture.   I'm hoping that I can get through the cravings this year.

Does anyone have any good strategies for getting through them?  Alternate foods or drinks that have worked well.

My doctor told me to cut out all caffeine a year and a half ago. I was usually picking up a diet coke around 2 or 3 in the afternoon to wake me up. I found that a handful of nuts, peanut butter and celery or some crunchy veggies or fruit helped carry me through the afternoon slump. I won't lie, the first week or so sucked big time but having some food energy helped.

If you're just cutting out soda consider tea or coffee. You'll get the caffeine fix without the real or artifical sugar.

OK.  I'm in.  Weight (per Weight Watchers on Thursday) was 158.2.  I've already started warning family members.   I checked the Slow Churned and Weight Watchers ice cream and sugar is the second ingredient.  I had high hopes, now dashed.  All of my salad dressing is OK so that's a relief.  It really will come down to giving up ice cream and Diet Coke for ten weeks.

But I too want to be really clear about whether this challenge starts Sunday morning or Monday morning.   It looks like it would have to be Sunday morning in order to make it come out even weeks ending on February 28.

I have a question.  I was thinking that the sweets/sugars meant only for snacks, as I was reading people's questions, b/c we could eat what we would normally eat as a meal.  Like peanut butter on bread.

So question, we aren't really watching fat with our meals?  I'm trying now to think of meals. Today, for example, I did want to treat myself since its the last day of school and I'm on survival mode in terms of work. I had my favorite panera egg and cheese sandwich.  Now I"m totally confused as to whats allowed for meals or not!

What kinds of meal suggestions do you guys have for B, L, and D?

I"m usually a bagel and light cream cheese breakfast girl, something easy to grab and go, should I just have a hard boiled egg?

Please help!

For B L D eat whatever you'd like.  Just make sure if you cook something, or if an ingredient list is available, nothing is eaten where sugar is a top 3 ingredient.  I suggest you eat healthy as possible, but cheeses, fast food, is all acceptable... just practice sensibility and moderation.

Check all the food in your house this weekend and make changes.  My ketchup's ingredients are Tomato Paste, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Vingar, Salt .... so my ketchup is half corn syrup!!  Now I gotta find another ketchup!

The second ingredient in my smuckers Strawberry jame is HFCS ... you'll be amazed how many foods in your house are sugar ...and highly processed sugars.  I'm giving it all the Heave Ho!!!

High fructose corn syrup is the new silent killer. Sadly, it is found in almost everything we eat. find out how to avoid it.  http://www.healthmad.com/Nutrition/Dangers-of-High-Fructose-Corn-Syrup.32885

Weight = 195.  I can't believe I just wrote that down.

I'm trying not to go sugar crazy these last few days...though I will admit to trying to finish up any sugar-containing products in my house...mostly because I hate for food to go to waste and there isn't anyone else to eat it!  Oh, and I'm moving soon.

My weight is 185.  Ugh.

I'm posting it now because we're having a party with 50 people or so coming over Saturday night.  That will be my last night of indulgence, and I know I'll put on a couple pounds by Sunday morning, so I don't even want to weight myself that day.

I'm disappointed that my favorite cereal is now banned - Nature's Path Optimum.  Sure enough, the 2nd ingredient is the evaporated cane juice.  I never even heard of that until this challenge.  It's a healthy cereal with low calories, high protein, high fiber, etc.  But in the spirit of this, I won't cheat on that.

So today I bought Nature's Path Slim - on that one it's the 4th ingredient! Smile

I'll have the spreadsheet up and running on Monday with everyone's name and weight filled in.

Have a great weekend!

I started this early and it is so hard!  Was in charge of my son's xmas party today and I didn't have anything...I sent home all the extra stuff with another mom and I'm glad I did, I probably would have eaten the frosted brownies in my van on the way home!! I'm shocked at how little awareness i have when it comes to putting sugary things in my mouth....just looking at the grams of sugar is shocking to me, but I consume it with such indifference!

So, I'm going to the grocery store on Sat.....help me think of some natually "sweet" things as a treat....I'm thinking frozen grapes, etc.

Bob, I am so proud of you replacing an everyday food with food that has sugar further down the ingredient list!  Great Job!

And just remember  ... it's just for two months, not forever.

Some of you guys sound like your off to a good start:  resisting temptations at a holiday party and changing your cereals.

I had an office holiday party today where the only food offered was desserts.  I should have packed a healthy snack to eat while everyone else was eating the junk.

I have an extended family holiday party tomorrow (Sat) night.  I am going to try as hard as I can to resist the dessert table.

I think I am running into problems that last couple of days since I know come Monday, it will be off limits.  While I am not trying to overindulge now, I think unconsciously (sp?) I'm lowering my willpower level.  I'm highly competitive (most of us probably are), so I'm starting to feel positive that this challenge will be successful.

By the way, does anyone know of any jelly/jam that would work?  I need to replace the Smuckers in my PB&J.  Is there a brand that is 100% fruit puree or something?

Ok, I have read most the thread. I think I need to join this challenge. I love the evil sugar. Love, love, love it. I just bought another box of my favorite low fat ice cream sandwiches. Oh the torture. No chocolate. OMG.

I want to take off another 8-10 pounds or more if I can. I did this the month of November and lost 9 pounds since then. I am back on the sugar though.

I was 159 on Wed am when I worked out at the Y.

I'm trying to find a list of foods that are going to be "good" for me to eat.  I'm going to be away all weekend, and I'm afraid I won't be able to choose foods on Monday (staying at my aunt and uncle's) but I'd like to be able to have an idea of what to eat.

I'm not having much luck, just getting lists of diabetic foods...

but I did think this was an interesting and helpful article, tells you what kinds of names sugar can be disguised as.

 http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/sugars.htm

would reading that sugar busters diet book be helpful? or the Paleo diet?  I'm just looking for something I can take with me to read up on this while I'm gone.

I copied the list from the website above^^^

  • Corn sweetener
  • Corn syrup, or corn syrup solids
  • Dehydrated Cane Juice
  • Dextrin
  • Dextrose
  • Fructose
  • Fruit juice concentrate
  • Glucose
  • High-fructose corn syrup
  • Honey
  • Invert sugar
  • Lactose
  • Maltodextrin
  • Malt syrup
  • Maltose
  • Maple syrup
  • Molasses
  • Raw sugar
  • Rice Syrup
  • Saccharose
  • Sorghum or sorghum syrup
  • Sucrose
  • Syrup
  • Treacle
  • Turbinado Sugar
  • Xylose

I've followed the Paleo Diet that version for athletes. It is pretty hard and more restrictive than what we are doing but has similar thoughts about sugar subsitutes and explains well when it is okay to eat sugar/processed food prior to workouts and for recovery well. I think it is an excellent book on how to eat healthy for athletes but it is tough. I do Paleo in general but do eat cheese. I'm debating if I'm going to go without white stuff beyond what we are doing ie no white flour, white rice, white potatoes,  white bread, as that stuff doesn't agree with me and I feel better not eating plus it helps me lean down. Question in my head go cold turkey and cut out diet soda, chcolate, sugar, and white stuff all Midnight Sunday or add the white stuff later maybe after Xmas.

Sugar Busters I am not familar with.
