Subject: RE: Ghoulies vs BT World Halloween October Challenge Originally posted by wgraves7582 3 mile run in after spending quality time at one of our fine hospitals with my father - nothing like a run to relieve stress at the medical field. All better now I know this feeling. Several years ago my Dad was in the hospital for an extended stay. I would blow off steam by hiking the stairs for 30 min or so. |

Veteran 727 Baltimore Area | Subject: RE: Ghoulies vs BT World Halloween October Challenge I have had a Garmin Forerunner 305 since 2010. About 2 weeks ago, it fell apart, literally. Garmin said I have two choices. They can replace it with a refurbished unit for $80 OR give me up to $80 towards another unit. I loved my F305 but it doesn’t have heart rate based calories for indoors because it goes by distance. I can’t use it for spin class, boot camp (indoor & outdoor) or strength training. I would really like to know how many calories I burn for those classes or sessions. I want to use it mainly for running (primarily outdoors) and indoor workouts like spin class, boot camp or strength training. If it is water resistant, I can swim with it but that’s not a must. Especially since it probably wouldn’t read my HR underwater anyway. I just track my swim by total time and distance. I have a different non-Garmin bike computer with cadence so the bike part is not super important as long as I can track my HR since the bike computer will do distance and time. Any recommendations? Should I get the same unit or trade for something else? |

Pro 4482 NJ | Subject: RE: Ghoulies vs BT World Halloween October Challenge Easy trail run over lunch today. The best part was the hospital was having their staff picnic at the park. I don't work at the hospital but have had my share of scans/procedures/whatever there - and knew the guy who was working the ice-cream tent. I *may* have scored a double scoop of chocolate for a recovery snack. Hope everyone has a great weekend of training. |

That is awesome my 18 y/o daughter is doing her first 5k tomorrow morning but in another state so I won't get to watch or participate tonight! Doing this stuff with your kids and/or family is very, very special. This summer I did the Seattle Rock n' Roll Marathon with my daughter, her husband, son, his girlfriend, my brother, and my wife. I will cherish those memories forever. Tomorrow, I'm doing a marathon with daughter, her hubby, and my wife. I am giddy with anticipation. It's an Oktoberfest race so huge beer gardens afterwards. |

Congrats to your daughter! Hope she had fun! The Turkey Trot is a great idea. We did one as a family a few years ago and won a pumpkin pie! I think my step-daughter wants to do it again this year. |

I have a different non-Garmin bike computer with cadence so the bike part is not super important as long as I can track my HR since the bike computer will do distance and time. Any recommendations? Should I get the same unit or trade for something else? My thoughts...I wouldn't spend $80 for a refurbished 305. Either upgrade or go basic (which today is still pretty darn good.) If you are only looking to use the watch for running I'd put the $80 towards a simple unit like the FR70. I believe the FR70 uses a HR based calculator to estimate calories burned, so it should work for gym stuff. You might want to confirm that with Garmin customer service. That said, I wouldn't rely on calorie estimates too much for your ST or gym sessions. It's really not going to be terribly reliable. Now, if you want to take the $80 and upgrade then the 310xt or 910xt are great options. I have the 910 and love it. You may even be able to find a 310xt on sale somewhere for less than what you will get from Garmin even with the $80 credit. I've only used Garmin products so there may be other options as well. A great source to educate yourself on all things "gadget" is www.dcrainmaker.com His product reviews are outstanding. Edited by kcarroll 2013-10-06 3:40 PM |
