Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Socks - 2010-09-19 3:07 PM kevmk81 - 2010-09-19 10:46 AM I've got another question for those that know about the course: I'm wondering what type of course the run is. Concrete? Rocks? Smooth? Rough? Lots of cracks? Asphalt? Run at all off the street (grass, dirt, etc)?? I guess I could email the RD, but I'm sure I'll get an answer from you guys! Thanks! Most of it is on streets which I assume are asphalt. There is a section where you run on the concrete side walk. IN the park its paved. Really not too much in the line of cracks pot holes etc. Really nothing on dirt/grass unless you choose to run on the side of the road. I would highly suggest a light for your hat if you will be a late finisher (LIKE ME) Its extremely dark in the park. I rode the run course and recall quite a few speed bumps. |

Veteran 593 Mandeville | Subject: RE: Pacing Strategy Bike: I've heard that a reasonable multiplier for HIM bike to IM bike is 2.2. That would put my IM time at 5:39 or 19.8 mph. That's quite a bit faster than my training rides of late. But, I'm doing my training with rolling hills, unsupported, and open road conditions. This is the biggest variable in my plan, so I was thinking about back off speed for an even 6 hrs (18.7 mph). Run: As I said, my open marathon time is close to 4 hrs. At gulf coast HIM, I averaged about 8:45 min/mile for 9 miles. The last 4 miles were a struggle as the heat became an issue for me and I ended up walking the last 4 at about 13 min/mile. Here is my opinion, and take it for what it's worth, because this is my first IM as well, BUT I think the 2.2 rationale might be a bit too ambitious. I'll tell you why I say this. Giving too much on the bike is probably the biggest pitfall I hear from IM'ers. I have heard things like 1 mph too much on the bike can cost you 1-2 min PER MILE!! WOW, thats :30 -1 hour of suffering on the run. For example, a 19 minute time savings on the bike from 18.5 mph to 19.5 mph may cost you an hour on the run. Forget about the time issue here, but an easier bike will also set up a more enjoyable run. Unless of course, your fastest time is the only way to enjoy the race. I'm also around a 5:30 HIM'er as well. Bike around 21 mph and run around 2:05 for HIM. I have been doing all my IM training by heart rate and have already done four 100 mile rides (and the heat has definitely played a roll), but I've seen alot of slowing on the bike for that kind if distance. I noticed your 6 hour back off time was a bit slower than the 2.2 figure you mentioned, I just wanted to say my strategy is if in doubt on the bike, slow it down on the run. You can always gain time on the marathon if you have "fresh" legs. If you get to the marathon and like your time, keep it relaxed and have a fun run. Just my 2 cents. Good luck. |

An then there are those of us for whom no matter what happens on the bike the run will be a sufferfest. I actually disagree with the 2.2 bike thing too but in the opposite way. My best IM bike time is 6:07 my best HIM bike time is 2:54 which applying the 2.2 bike rule would give me a 6 hour 23 minute bike time. Pretty close I guess. But my point is we are all different athletes and you need to do what is right for YOU not some made up calculation. What is right for one athlete is not right for another. IF you are an amazing runner this stuff might hold true for you. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: t-shirts We are going to have shirts for racers and a different one for support crew right? In past we offered both tech fabric and regular t shirts with the later being cheaper. Is that the case this year? Count effects price but, does anyone recall how much they were last year for both kids, adults, t shirt and tech, it may help folks commit to them. |

What is right for one athlete is not right for another. IF you are an amazing runner this stuff might hold true for you. I kinda disagree. Pushing too much on the bike will hurt your run not matter your age, skill level or speed. Your level of pain and suffering on the run could be attributde to MANY different things, form, nutrition, lack of proper run training, overtraining, being undertrained etc, BUT pushing too hard on the bike will make anyone suffer MORE on the run. Look at the pro's, guys like Macca and Chris Lieto want to hammer the bike so that it might hurt great runners like Crowie and Raelert who will try and push too hard on the bike to try and keep up. Now look at BOP'ers, they're even more affected by pushing the bike too hard. Top level runners may have their time slowed down a little by puching too hard on the bike. AG'ers may have their day ruined and they're race finished by pushing too hard on the bike. I'd venture to say, keeping it reeled in on the bike is more important for the worst runners, not the best runners. You also can't really compare PR's to get an accurate pacing guideline. If you use your body and experience as a guide to set your race pace, you certainly don't want to use your best times as the basis. |

Veteran 405 Memphis, TN | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I finally heard back from the t-shirt company and the prices are the same as last year. The regular shirts are $15 and the drifits are $23.50. We'll have the athlete shirts as well as the "BT SUPPORT CREW" shirts. I'll need the money prior to ordering the shirts. All orders need to be in by the 9th of October. It'll take about 2 weeks to make them and I want to allow 2 weeks prior to the race to ship them out. My paypal account is under [email protected]. Please be sure to include you're address, shirt size, type of shirt, athlete or supporter, and bt name. |

The cage mounts to that and straps to the aerobars. The straps suck and rip apart at the seam with the plastic loop on the strap - so I do use zip ties. You can just mount a cage with zip ties and save the $40 on the mount. |
