Good luck Rudy!

Just discovered that Parkrun now hold a weekly 5k timed race at the park 5mins walk from my house! I guess I'll be doing some 5k's once the HIM is finished.

Just got back from Kona.  It was an EPIC day with the crazy winds in full force.  I'll try to get a RR up soon, but I actually had a great race.  Even got to see Lance up close just before the swim start.  He's a big dude...much bigger than I expected.

Jason - I was following the live feed and saw some of the pics.  Looked like unreal wind out there!

My race went well today, but a bridesmaid I'm afraid.  Missed out on the last AG podium spot by 13 seconds.  RR here:

May wasn't a very good month for me training wise or otherwise really--so not even going to bother posting totals. Very glad it is June and a new rotation is starting. I haven't even had the time to take my bike out for a spin...going to try and rectify that this week. I've really noticed over this past two months how much I enjoy this sport because of how, frankly, miserable I have been not being able to train for/partake in triathlons due to school/work:GIM. Little nervous of how I did on my exams last week and hoping for the sake of my sanity that I passed that rotation. Peds= loveliness and more time for Swim Bike Run! looks like the group has been doing well! I'm excited to see how you all do in your upcoming races over the next few months!

Ryan - we'll see how things go for my race this weekend, but I do worry that all this extra effort won't pay off and I should have spent more time running.  We'll see.

One other swim question - do you breathe every 1 or 3 strokes in a race?  I very much have gotten used to breathing bilaterally, and now do it exclusively, but read something about getting more oxygen by breathing every stroke - makes sense.  So now I'm wondering if I should do that this weekend.  Decided to breathe that way for the sets of 100's I did today.  How about everyone else?

I think the main issue with breathing every stroke is that the majority of people are not good at maintaining body position while breathing and tend to have a resultant "plowing" phase through the water while taking a breath because the lower body sinks a bit with lifting the head to breathe. As a kid in swimming I was always told to breathe as minimally as possible to maintain body position. Also I don't know about the idea of hyper oxygenating if you breath more rapidly. Only a set volume of the air that enters your lungs ends up in the terminal areas of the lung where gas exchange between the lungs and blood occurs, the rest is in what is called "anatomic dead space". Since there is a relative time for diffusion of oxygen to occur across the lung membranes into the blood and have waste products go opposite direction to be moved out I think there would be some limit as far as what is adequate breathing for any given exertional level--anything above that you could just potentially be moving air through dead space. Not entirely sure and I haven't really ever heard/researched it myself, so just my musings on the matter.

I know there are others that raced this weekend.  I would like to know and for the group how your races went.

I volunteered at a local Tri this weekend.  It was fun.  I finished last week strong with a brick bike/run on Saturday.  It was another big week for me with intensity and volume combine.  Not for the faint hearted.  This week will be relatively calm and next week even calmer getting ready for my next race on June 16th.

I PR'd the swim, had a good bike and totally imploded on the run late into it.

not that i went too hard on the bike, i actually was reserved (for me) the hills just ate at me all day and showed up late in the run.

Once i was passed by the 4th Clyde mile 11 or 12, i shut it down and walked a ways back till the people.

I ran the end for the people, they stand out there and cheer for strangers for 6 hours plus, they deserve for you to make an effort and run past them so they can cheer some more, you have to respect the people, and if that means running when every fiber of your body says this sucks balls, you run anyway.

this course ate me up and spit me out, i did not have the race i wanted, but in the long run, that might be a good thing.

Elaine is soooo nice, too bad we did not get to hang longer, and i was not in good shape right after the race.

Haven't had a chance to read people's race reports yet but congrats on the results

Just had an email to say my HIM on Sunday has been cancelled due to "water safety concerns". There's another race in September I might do instead but as everyone in the U.K. is doing some form of street party for the Queen's jubilee, I'll leave that til later to decide.

Well done to everyone that raced this weekend!

Rudy:  Well done on the swim PR and hanging tough on the run.

Neil:  Just off the podium but still a solid race.

Jason: Sounds like a smart race you put together.  You have to race the conditions on that day and be flexible with your race strategy and it sounds like you did that.

Tom:  Congrats on the PR!  What is with the gravel road on the course...they cannot avoid that stretch!

Race week for me.  I am getting excited and whole lots of nervous.  Hoping for a couple OWS this week.

Neil - great racing.  anytime you're near the podium, it's a good thing.

Tom - nice job on the PR.

Rudy - awesome job to cap a tough weekend of racing that most mortals would not attempt.

Pretty darn sore today.  Going down stairs is a task in itself.  Going to try and spin on the exercise bike after work.

Next up is the 40k State TT championships this Sunday.  Shouldn't be racing again for at least a month after that.

Also strongly considering switching my last tri of the season in late July to a relay.  A friend of mine who's training for an Ultra could do the run, I can do the bike, and we're hoping to get a solid female swimmer.

Working on my Oly race report from Quassy.

Wet + wind + hills + cold + borrowed bike = slowest bike split ever! But, I didn't crash or quit. And I actually had fun on the run!

Heading for an OWS this afternoon at my parents lake.  I need to work on my start and settling in after about 200 yards.  Nice to have my retired dad putzing along on the seadoo to watch me.

Elaine:  I know the borrowed bike thing can be tough.  Glad you were able to hang in there and have some fun on the run.

Rudy & Tom - great jobs on your races.  Rudy, I can only imagine how your body must feel after this weekend...

Elaine - got to be tough racing on a borrowed bike.  I'm glad that you were able to enjoy the end of the race.  Great to see such a positive attitude!
