Busy day for me, but not too busy to sign on to BT and check the thread out (and secretly check the logs of many of the LP training peeps... My patients keep asking me for things that don't come easy-like weight loss. I remind them that it is simple, but not easy. Eat less, exercise more...There is no 'magic pill'. sigh... Have a great weekend IMLP training group! I don't often quote Oprah but she said it best,"If there were a pill, I'd have it." More and more I am hearing these bariatric stories and Syracuse has a large center that advertises on TV a lot for it. I am all for it from a medical prespective but I have a hard time with people doing it because they are lazy. I was pushing 280 in Dec of 2009, resting HR of 89... and I pushed back... I am 189 now, resting HR of 60 with great BP etc. I still have a ways to go IMO.. I am only 5'9"... but from a toning perspective. Regardless if the extra skin stays or not you won't find me going under the knife... plus if I shake in the water maybe I'll get more propulsion sans wetsuit! And don't get me started on the little rascal with the free arm picker upper thingy... again, for those who NEED it go get it, but I am tire of the laziness this country caters to. that being said I am going to try and rip a sub 8 min mile 5k tomorrow.... my PR is an 8:17 4 miler a few weeks ago. If I can hold 8:17 for 4 I think I can hold 8 for 3.1..... unless one of those darn rascals trip me up!
Good luck, You can do the sub 8 your training has been great. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() klassman - 2012-04-13 1:26 PM First race of the year is tomorrow morning. I'm doing the Rumpus in Bumpus Olympic...although the last two weeks haven't been stellar for training, I have gotten in the long stuff. After I come out of the water, I'm going to redline it for as far as I can. It should be interesting to see how my legs respond for the bike since I'll be going all out for an hour instead of Z2 for longer periods of time.
Good Luck you are going to do great. Becareful redlining it, you don't want to risk any type of injury. I'm getting goosebumps already just knowing that some of you are going to be racing this weekend. I don't have anything coming up until the 28th and 29th of this month. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TankBoy - 2012-04-13 3:45 PM 14 weeks to go and it appears that the race season is finally upon us! Lots of racers this weekend: Klassmen, Bootri, Drdking, who else? I have a just-for-fun organized century tomorrow with a recovery swim on Sunday. What is on tap for everyone else? Good luck racers!
Just sticking to the plan, 3 hour bike ride with a quick change to a 30 min run on Saturday. Then Sunday is a 45 min bike ride and a 1 hour 30 min run. Just staying on target....... stay on target |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Geesh! I have a 4hr bike ride tomorow and 45mins run. Its supposed to be raining/windy tomorow 3k straight swim today (friday) and I had a lot of Oomph! ( energy) As for half Ironman practice, my personal opinion would be, take the flat one. Remember this is just a dress rehearsal race for you. Focus more on nutrition and pacing and also you'll recover a lot quicker after the race! If you come out of the half ironman feeling like it was too easy, then you will be craving to perform more in LP. |

I have never seen Mirror Lake as bad as it was yesterday it was actually choppy with some white caps. The water looked cold but the locals say there is one guy who swims it everyday. There no buoys in and nobody was on the lake. Cornick the wind was crazy but I will let it blow now as long as it is gone on July 22. |

![]() Looking forward to hear how the LP BT members made out in their races today! I have a Mini-Sprint next weekend. Looking forward to have some fun racing!! I'm back after a short hiatus. Well, I got sick - third time this year!! First time was a sinus migraine, 2nd time was the flu, and this time was a nasty stomach virus. My 6-yr-old has a habit of bringing home some nasty germs from school and giving them to me right after a hard week of training when I'm really tired. I think I'm going to have my wife start scrubbing her down with disinfectant before she comes into the house. And while I was recovering, I took some time to thing. Truth is, one conclusion I came to is that Ironman training is not that hard. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination; but I would say alone, by itself, Ironman training is actually fun and challenging. It's the balancing Ironman training with family, work, kids, wife, social and community commitments, that's what's really effing hard!! |

I agree with you that training, by itself is quite fun and probably important to all of us 'A'types...and I whole-hearted agree that TIME MANAGEMENT is the fourth discipline in triathalon. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I just haven't been feeling it on my bikes and runs like I have in the past. Thought I was just late starting so a bit out of shape. Then the months go by and it doesn't really change. Short efforts were ok and I was seeing improvement on the bike in my LT testing, but anything with any distance I was breaking down and bonking quickly. Long story short I had a full Cardio/Pulmonary Exercices test done yesterday. I now have asthma and apparently pretty bad. My lung function is 25% worse than last year. My ability to draw in O2 is only 55% of what is the predicted value. I am starving for air. The good news is that I kept pushing in training thinking I was just being a wus...so my VO2max climbed by 9 ml/min/kg. I feel better knowing that it wasn't just me getting older and slower, but a little concerned that I have to get this figured out in the next month or so or it will be a long painful day out there. Started on a steroid inhaler. Getting tested again in early May. Ok..that's my whine of the day. Speaking of which....just poured a nice glass after a long ride today. Hope all your training is going well out there. Speedbumps happen! |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() So after my track meet today I got to thinking. Since I started training for the ironman on top of my track workouts I have: Dropped 5 seconds in my half mile Dropped 30 seconds in my 1500 Dropped 30 seconds in my mile Dropped 45 seconds in my 3000 Dropped 50 seconds in my 3000 steeple and here is the big one. Dropped 1 minute in my 5k. I think that this stuff is working, or at least making me stronger and I think the big difference is that it is a whole lot easier to breath for me during a race. just thought I would amuse people with this. Hope everyone's training is going well and that those that raced this weekend survived the rain and wind! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I notched my first race of the season yesterday. It was an OLY although the bike leg was only 23 miles. There was a last minute change of venue so the course had some unexpected challenges in the form of running on gravel for 85 percent of the way. Nonetheless, it was a gorgeous day with the weather. No injuries and I raced according to plan. Looking back, there are some places where I could have been faster -- pushed more on the second half of the run, transitions (esp. T2) but it was a good race. I ended up dropping 11 minutes off of my PR...so for all of the grumbling that I might have done about the run course or what have you, I'm just glad it all worked out. Race report is up if you are interested (Rumpus in Bumpus OLY can be accessed from my logs too.) I'll probably write a blog post about it later tonight. Funny thing, my heartrate for the bike averaged 148. All along, I kept thinking, "I bet I could tolerate another 5bpm and still run off the bike." But, trying to muscle up another gear just dropped my cadence into the low 80s so I stuck with what I had. Weird Ironman training observation of the day: I slept in the backyard because the kids and I had a campout. We cooked on the grill, had smores and homemade ice cream and had the tent up with sleeping bags. I am more sore today in my lower back from the 5 year old's knees than I am from the race. I guess those 60-80 mile bike rides followed by a short run are doing something for me. Hope you all had safe and productive weekends. |

Monte, so sorry to hear about you diagnosis but having an answer and knowing why you feel the way you do will make a big differance for you mentally. Just keep with your training. You will still lap me on the swim and the bike. |
