Alright, my crazy mountain  race report is up. Sorry if it's a bit scattered and grammatical error-laden. I haven't had much time but wanted to get it while it's fresh!

Your RR got me wondering if I should try to do some trail races.  I looked it up on Runningintheusa.com and found a short one in April (not happening before my marathon), then longer ones in May, July and early August.  Think I should do some of those to get some practice before PPA?

I don't think you necessarily need to race on the trails but I believe you should run on them. Honestly, I also think hiking is extremely relevant too. Especially steep stuff.

I LOVE trail running and hiking. You will use muscles you never use on the road, exert more effort and have a blast! And, when you get back on the road, I think you will find you are stronger. That's been my experience anyway!!

I just signed up for a series of cross country races.  Not quite trail running, but it'll still be a nice change from stomping the same old route around the golf course.  There are 2 a month May-August on Wednesday evenings in various places around the Denver area.  The first one should be pretty interesting.  It's got some single-track, a water crossing, and some serious hills (well, for me anyway).  The rest are a lot less challenging, being a lot flatter although still on dirt/gravel.  Most are based on local high school cross country race routes, with the final one at CU Boulder's race venue.  I figure it'll be a fun way to get in some mid-week miles that fit in with my training distances.  Plus there will be food trucks and a beer garden after each one.  I think I'm going to skip the tutu though.

I am really looking forward to trail running. I'm going to explore several areas and many different trails doing it.

Sorry, but that is dumb.  To me, Masters is for all abilities.  They should call themselves an elite club or something, not Masters.

Not dumb.  I think that a speed requirement is actually against USMS policy.  Masters refers to age, not ability/speed.

Their website says this for prerequisites: "You should feel comfortable in a 25-yard pool and be able to swim 300 yards freestyle within six minutes, rest one minute and then repeat."  Are you saying that having this type of requirement is against the rules?  The team claims to be the largest in the Rocky Mountain region and their coach was named COMSA coach of the year a few years back.  I'd think that if their speed requirement was against the rules, they'd have been called out about it.

I did find another team on one of the links posted above that I'm familiar with.  I thought they weren't around anymore so I'm excited to see that they are.  They even practice in the evenings, which is when I prefer to work out, and they swim not too far from my house.  I'm definitely going to check them out.

At the very least, it's against the philosophy.  I mean, the USMS FAQ says:

I'm not fast enough (or in shape enough) to be a Masters swimmer...
This is something a lot of Masters coaches hear. However, most Masters coaches and swimmers don’t care how fast you are. In nearly every program, there are others of similar ability, or those who started where you are and have improved. Don’t let your perceived ability, or lack thereof, hold you back. Although it’s important to have a physical examination before starting any exercise routine, you don’t need to be in shape to start Masters swimming—Masters swimming will help you get there.

Be curious about their suggestion as to how one should accomplish this if they can't get in to swim. Some might offer help outside of the normal practices or have some suggestions. If they don't then something seems wrong with the program.

RAD!

Yall know  how I feel about cross country! Will you be running with a team or as an individual. XC is AMMMAAZZZINNNNG by itself but if you can, running with a team is even better.

Just individually.  I don't know if there will be any teams competing.  Since I'm focused on tris right now, I'm not sure I'm up for joining a team, but maybe in the future....

So my win put me in first place in the trail running series http://www.webscorer.com/seriesresult?seriesid=39748

But the challenging thing is, the woman who is my "competition" runs longer stuff and I do shorter stuff, so we may never actually go head to head. So, it's just who shows up to race us.

Happy tax day!!  Once again I am last minute and heading to the post office.  Seems I am always running a little behind.  Anyone else still have their Christmas tree up??

My training plan has this as a bike focus week which is good.  It is my weakness now and I really need to ramp it up if I am going to have a good HIM in June.  I also need to get outside and off the trainer to gauge where I'm really at.

Saturday is one of two of THE big local 5k's of the year around here.  It is the fastest, flat course with a large fast field.  The one mile mark goes right in front of my house so usually have some neighborhood support.  I would have liked to have better prepared for this but I guess you can't do it all.  I've chosen to try to stick with a greater focus on my training for the HIM.  Oh well, maybe lightning will struck and I'll just have one of those days.  This is such a great race.  For $20, it's chip timed, tech shirt, commemorative pint glass, free pizza and the weather should be perfect.

Yeah! I won't be surprised if I don't win it though. Just because the shorter races tend to have more competition than the longer races. But then again, you never know who will show up.

Something interesting I saw on COMSA...a Mastering Masters 6-week course:

An Introductory Course Developed by Colorado Masters Swimming Association (COMSA) to Provide Confidence, Understanding and Skills for Swimmers to become Masters Swimmers.

Though it doesn't seem to be against any "rule" to set prerequisites, as the site says "Structure and organization of USMS programs vary", maybe this is their answer to any complaints for some classes having them.

My schedule is kind of crazy right now, so I feel like the third plan is the most reasonable given my week-day schedule.

Then this is the one you go with...for now. Nothing forcing you to keep the exact plan if your crazy schedule gets less so   Adapt and overcome.

I'll bet you're right.  It sounds like a good program.

Especially when you lie around a Vegas pool for a week

You might surprise yourself with some really grateful-for-the-vacation legs. And Wow, what a great price for all of that!

But the challenging thing is, the woman who is my "competition" runs longer stuff and I do shorter stuff, so we may never actually go head to head. So, it's just who shows up to race us.

That's. So. Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah! I won't be surprised if I don't win it though. Just because the shorter races tend to have more competition than the longer races. But then again, you never know who will show up.

Meh. I agree with Steve. My money's on you!

+1  It's a foregone conclusion in my mind!  I'm planning on buying you a celebratory beer when you're out here in August.

OORRRR...knowing her MO, you sign up for a longer one and take her down  (have you pre-registered for these?)

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
