I've done something wrong! Will spend time figuring it out before I call uncle! Sorry :-( It was invented by gamers. What can I say? :-/ |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think I may have finally rounded the bend with this cough. 2 weeks of no workouts is making me crazy. Hoping I can join in on the 5k fun. Zink has surgery on Monday for his luxating patella(s). Figure since I'm home for the next 8 weeks (and on 'spring break' until the 14th), it was as good a time as any for his recovery time. |

Maybe one at lunchtime eastern and one at whatever time works for Karen, Kirsten, and other pacific/mountain time Manatees? I really wanted to do the Vacation Races stay-at-home half marathon. I'm not in half marathon shape right now though The swag looks fun.

After the account is created, you can log back in at https://discordapp.com/login. heres my problem. I tried to create an account yesterday, may have been successful, so when I go to the site it asks me to claim my account then says it already exists! So I see a search bar for “server discovery” and put in manatee but get no results. This makes me feel dumb! Ask me a legal question please so I can feel smart |

I'm in Janyne, but you probably already knew that thanks Chris! Biking is allowed in NC and bike shops are consider essential as a form of transportation. No sports with sharing equipment is allowed (no basketball, frisbee, tennis, etc.), at least in my area. Gyms are closed. Some municipalities have had to specify that this includes gyms in apartment complexes. Anyway, I've been riding alone with outside, carrying extra waters because I don't want to go into a C Store, and finding a tree when necessary. I've encountered some group rides and while I suppose it's following the letter of the law -- maybe (one would assume that they stop at signal lights and gather closer than 6 feet together) -- it certainly violates the spirit of it. I would ride with Kevin thought. I mean, if one of is gets sick, both of us will anyway. I believe that family groups are OK in most juristictions. Regarding wearing face masks, even in NYC, it's permissible to *not* use them when exercising. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good news from my home! I picked up a new bike (well at least new to me). One hobby my younger brother and I like to do is breathing new life into older bicycles. We generally tend to focus on bike from the mid 80s to the early 90s, as you can find them really inexpensive but with some TLC they can be excellent rides. My new bike my brother found on Craigslist in Denver CO. It had suffered the humiliation of being a single speed convert. He bought it for really cheap (the guy that was selling it was more of a BMX/freestyle guy) and my brother was fascinated with the bike. My brother has a stash of parts from previous projects, so we was able to bring it back to ride-able shape. My brother was a bit disappointed to find out that the frame was just too small for him (he generally rides one size up from me) but he held on to it. This last summer, when I mentioned to him that I wanted to compete in an aquabike event and that I was probably going to just ride my mtn bike (with narrow slicks) until I could paint and build up road bike project, he says "I have the bike for you." We got it out, aired up the tires, and I took it for a spin in the parking lot. It felt so good to be on a skinny tire bike! She is a 1998 Cannondale Multisport 1000 and she is my first tri-bike I've ever owned. I've got a few things left to do:
On to my next question: What pedals/cleats does everyone run for their bikes? I have a pair of Shimano road racing shoes with the red LOOK cleats, so I am thinking about getting a set of pedals that I can use with them. I also have a set of Shimano touring shoes set up with SPD cleats for the mtn bikes. Thank you for any input! --Tom |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My time is pretty flexible right now but that could change. After next week we may go to a couple of scheduled Zoom calls a week with our class (next week we aren't doing "live" teaching). My guess is those would need to be during the normal school day hours, probably not too early as I really doubt the kiddos are going to get out of bed in time to start a "normal" school day at 7:45! I would probably aim for somewhere between 9 AM and 2 PM, depending on what works best for families. So I should be "free" outside of those hours. (The reality is that 8-10 more hours a day, I'll be working on the computer designing/giving feedback on assignments and answering parent e-mails.) Hoping I can keep an afternoon slot for workouts, at least on run days so I can get outside. I'm struggling too to figure out what all this virus info means for outdoor running (too cold to make riding an attractive option yet, and anyway, I haven't really ridden outside for over a year already. What's a few more months?). Thinking I will just avoid some of the more popular trails as I can barely maintain 6 feet in some cases when passing/ being passed there, and that may not be enough. Weird, but my biggest concern is actually the large numbers of college athletes and other elite runners who train here. Being passed by some gazelle doing 4-5 minute mile pace is a very normal thing here. These athletes tend to be young (and by definition fit and healthy), so they're more likely than most to be asymptomatic carriers. And they run HARD and breathe HARD. They also tend to run down the middle of the trail. I understand--have been there. With high-level 3-5K training, you're often running so hard you have no idea exactly where you're running and if you're even running straight! Plus a lot of people here have asthma/allergies (this area of the country is infamous for high tree and grass pollen levels) and elite-level training in spring tends to make one gasp and cough. I worry a lot less about the other users, who tend to be moving along and breathing a lot more sedately. Some even wear masks. May just try to stick to neighborhood streets and less-used trails for the time being. |

nice bike, congrats! I just switched from Schimano to look as I bought Garmin Vector pedals. Vector pedals use look cleats. Those would give you flexibility. |

I know true road bike folks might think I'm kinda lame for my choice in shoes and pedals, but I went with Shimano mountain bike shoes with SPD cleats and some SPD pedals. I wanted something that was sufficiently comfortable not only for riding, but for when I got off the bike and had to walk as well. I like the recess for the cleats, and I like that I can clip in to either side of the pedals. They are a good cross between road and mountain bike shoes, they are not the tennis shoes type. Easy to get in and out of and plenty comfy. |

Differently sized then Look Keos, but nearly the same. I have SPD's on the gravel and hardtail MTB. I appreciate the flexibility of the SPD's. I may upgrade the gravel bike to something with more platform then the lollipop that is on there now, especially when going long. I noticed hot spots when I did Avon Park a few weeks back by the end and I believe it was from the fact that there is such a small contact point on the SPD's. My riding partner had the same clip, but a bigger platform and that may be the way I go. If you are going to be using a pedal based power meter, you will be need that clip type, so keep that in mind. Congrats on the bike!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How are all of you rethinking your year from a training perspective? Like most (all?) of the other Manatee Choo 70.3ers, I have deferred to May 2021. That leaves lots of wide open spaces. I think that I am going to pretend that I am training for some fall cycling -- something like Bike MS in September or or FestiVelo in November and also pretend that I will be able to run a half marathon or three (Ocean Isle or OBX or Mother Earth). Anyway, making plans that might well fall through just to provide a loose run and bike structure for the year. Of course those are my current thoughts and that might change! |
