Welcome back!

Lots of good discussions on swim drills, nutrition, what shorts to wear for a HIM (Trevor wants a picture of me in my tri-suit), some trainer questions, etc.

Question for all the guys here that have done HIM's.  What did you wear shorts wise?  I have a very nice tri-suit, but not sure if the pad in it will cut it for 56 miles.  Normally for rides that long I wear my regular bike shorts.  I do have a nice pair of orca tri-shorts that seem to have a thicker nicer pad in it but then I wouldn't be able to wear the cool tri-suit.

tri shorts.  LG power for the first.  zoot ultra for the second.  both have minimal padding.     LG is nice becasue of the width of the leg band.  but no pockets.  lots of people rave about the desoto forza but they didn't fit me right.

my concern about the tri suit is going to the bathroom.   i've had to hit the potty or the woods at least twice during both races.  i'd recommend you start wearing those orca's on your rides.  from now until LS i'll be  wearing tri shorts on most of my rides.

I have also been thinking about selling the Adamo race and trying out the Cobb saddle to see if that feels better on the longer rides.

LOL, need to work on that Tri-stuff yard sale.  I have some tri-tops that don't fit, TT-Shifters, Wetsuit, and a few other misc parts I need to get rid of.

I have had the exact same thoughts, the Arione just did not work for me, the Adamo is getting closer, but still can cause some discomfort and thinking about ramping up distances a bit this year could be a cause for concern.  I have heard great things about the Cobb saddle, but I want to get the Adamo a bit more time (and a proper bike fitting) before moving to the next saddle.

The downside of the suit is the bathroom, unless you are a free spirt and will let it go on the bike, I find that would be a challenge and distract me from riding!  I have some Pearl Izumi Tri shorts that have a pretty good pad in them I would consider, otherwise, I think deSoto has a pair that people talk up, but I do not remember the exact model.

How do you guys have problems going to the bathroom, just undo the zipper.  It's actually worse when I wear my cycling kit.  I wear bibs so have to take the whole shirt off then undo the bibs.  I feel like a little kid.  Always rushing around to get ready for my ride and realize I didn't put my heart rate strap on, so shirt and bib top have to come off, then after I get dressed back I realize I need to go to the bathroom....

to answer your question in a roundabout way..... here is one of the best threads ever.

I am glad you found it. I was going to look for it, but you came through again!

Wow y0u gusy are way ooutof my league. I just wear tri shorts and running jersey. No problems with having to stop and pee or anything of that sort. Also for my HIM I had purchased a pair of cheapo insert riding shorts. The kind that you can put inside any other shorts to make them cycling shorts. I actually wore those overtop of my regular trishorts for the cycling portion and then stripped them off for the run.

You guys have it so easy. It's always much harder for women, from waiting in long lines, to semi disrobing sometimes several layers. You guys have nothing to complain about.

thankfully some races take these needs into account.  for example,  there is a race in boston on patriots day... name of the race slips me right now...  that adds in 30 minutes for the women when they try to qualify.   ;-)

DougRob - 2010-01-03 9:59 PM

So tomorrow is my rest day, and honestly my body needs it. I am sore. left shin, right pelvic joint, sore nipples and chaffing between the thighs. Oh yeah and sore shoulders from the swim.

None of this is really bad, i.e., none of them are injuries or are debilitating. I know I am pushing myself to new levels of fitness. However, I am tired. I will be in bed by 11 tonight and that is early for me.

When I was running today I kept thinking "Boy, I better feel better than this during the marathon or I will never finish it." Then I realized I have to go through all this in order to be ABLE to finish it.

I have this shirt that says "TRAINING: What you do while your competition is asleep." These are the thoughts that keep me going during the tough sessions.

See you all tomorrow.

Doug

You've being working pretty hard lately Doug. I'm sure the body could yuse a rest just to heal up those nagging injuries.

I was all ready to give John a high five because I think that comment was hysterical and well deserved.  Then I saw his comments slamming women in the Boston marathon and want to slap him instead.  John, how exactly do you know about the start?  I think I missed your race report on the event.  Have you been there?

PS. I survived the swim AND I was just as awful at bilateral breathing as yesterday.

I am bored so I think I am going to write an interface to get PT data into BT.

If you're bored write an interface for Android to communicate with Outlook to do a direct sync rather than going thru several steps to sync contacts and calendars.
How does Verizon release an alleged smart phone that doesn't sync with Outlook?  BTW, I don't have a Droid yet for this very reason - but I sure do want one.

Not that I need another thing to hold me accountable as much as I want to win some extra spending $$.  Some people at work always do weight loss challenges and get pretty serious about it, although a majority of them end up just watching their diet and not as much exercise, and then starve for a few days before the weight in to shed pounds.  I have always opted out because a 10% loss would be nearly impossible for me and that was just the first time they did it, then they all put the weight back on and do it again a few months later.

They just sent out a new one (to go along with resolutions) but this time they are basing it on averaged calorie amounts based on activity.  They sent a huge list of things, everything from running to walking and carrying a baby and their calorie values per hour.  Some are probably not real accurate (Says 600/hr for playing Kickball, the way our team used to play, there is no possible way we burnt that much)

All things said, I entered, I figure 10-14 hours of training a week will give me a good start and make me not want to miss workouts.  It will work well because my biking schedule will go nicely with the amounts per hour they list.

Entry fee was 20 bucks, First prize gets 60%, second 30%, and 3rd is 10%.  I need some extra money for entry fees, so this will work well.  It will take me up to about a week before my first tri and about a month before my first A race)

I wasn't going to chime in on your issues with the breathing because you know me and swimming    but I have been told I have a very good stroke...I just have no endurance...anyway...I have always been a left side breather only and started learning right side breathing last summer.  There were 2 things that REALLY helped me. One was the arm-pit breathing thoughts, but the biggest help was concentrating on my glide/reach/extension etc. with the "off" arm and that helped me maintain a better position in the water and also helped with the rotation needed to get my face where it needed to be.

In other words....slow down with the stroke, glide and extend the "off" arm and let the core rotate until the belly button is facing the side of the pool.  This will allow your face to rotate to a good breathing slot.  You MUST maintain a downward angle with the face and look back at the arm-pit otherwise you have the feeling of lifting your face.

Take that for what it is worth but those techniques helped me and within 3 weeks I was able to go both ways......well...you know what I mean.

Hope that helps.

ETA...It helped me to think about doing the "catch-up" drill in order to maintain my focus on the extension and rotation.  I tend to think about this drill a lot and it helps with my balance and positioning in the water.

OK, sorry to vent, but...

I just found out that I will be unable to participate in the Arizona marathon that I was scheduled to do on Jan 17.  I have to travel for work, and the last flight from Arizona that would get me where I need to go in time for the meeting leaves Arizona at 12:10pm on Jan 17.  Considering that I will need 4+ hours to run the race, and the race starts at 7:40am, there is no way I can do the race and make the flight to .  (Plus, I have to eat the entry fee and the airline ticket.)

UGGHHHH.

I know that, in light of all the economic trouble the country is experiencing, I should count my blessings about having a job, etc.  but it is still frustrating.  I was really looking forward to doing this -- it was going to be my first marathon, I was going to stay with some close friends who are the parents of my godson, etc.

I guess I need to retool my 2010 racing schedule and come up with a substitute race.  Any ideas?  I am doing the Florida HIM in May, so I do not want to interfere with that.

Thanks.

THAT STINKS!  Does AZ have an early start for walkers?  A lot of times, those that think they will finish in >6 hours get two start two hours early so they don't miss a cut off?  or would you be just as happy running the half?

Two questions on the highlighted stuff above.  What is the off arm? is it the extended arm?  and how can I get the extended arm to stay up longer?  I actually learned how to swim using the catch up drill and can keep my left arm out flippin' forever, but cannot do the same thing with the right one.....it is the most awkward feeling.

Now, I really need some heavy duty positive vibes coming to Wisconsin.  Remember I told you about my friend Bob?  He went home on New Year's Eve after having several tests to determine what caused the aneurism.  They never found out, but said he was good to go.  I just got off the phone with his wife.  He was rushed back to the hospital with another aneurism, this one burst and he is paralyzed and cannot speak more than a word at a time none of which makes sense.  Neurosurgeon is talking to her shortly about options.  He is one of my husband's very best friends....really sad.   Reminds me once again that life is too short to waste it....
