That 3:50/300 on the last one must have hurt. Hypothetical for the group. If you decided that you didn't have time to devote to triathlon and wanted to go from being mediocre at 3 sports to being good in 1 sport. What would you? Bike racing? Running? Swimming? Why? Because you are good at it? Because you enjoy it the most? Because you think logistically it is easiest? Just curious. I'd hop to swimming if I wanted to be good at something individually - it's my back ground, and I'm not TOO far off from being competitive. But those 5:30am Master's practices don't sound so awesome as my pool is outside and it's in the 50s/60s in the morning... Easiest? Running. Just need shoes - can do anytime, anywhere. So, I'm not sure which I'd pick Oh the fun is just beginning for you. Wait until winter. lol Nothing like getting ready when it is 32 out. Pool at 80 is nice but then it really sucks getting back out. |

![]() | ![]() I have this horrible muscle twitch thing going that maybe someone can help me with? It is in the region of the teres major or minor area. It just sits there and twitches all frigging day/night long for about the last week. Mostly when my arms are down by my side. To stop it I just take my left arm above my head. It is driving me quite literally insane. Any ideas on how to get it to stop? No pain. Edited by bzgl40 2012-11-07 3:35 PM |

![]() | ![]() acumenjay - 2012-11-07 12:36 PM Honestly, I'm just addicted to working out. After thinking about it, I just need to be doing something. If I don't work out in the morning I feel off for the rest of the day. I don't care if it's hitting they gym, swimming, biking, running. I'd probably even really enjoy crossfit if I tried it (gasp). I'm thankful I can do what I do and don't have any big injuries at the moment to contend with because I realize how frustrating that can be. I can't even handle getting sick and not working out. I am the same way. When I first moved to Payson all I really did was run short runs and strength train since my season was pretty much done. As long as I am doing something active I'm fairly happy and like you I have to start my day that way I find. I can skip a day every now and then but it really sets my mind right for the rest of the day |

Usually when the muscles are relaxed, but they never lasted more than a few minutes. All day long would drive me nuts too. |

In an ideal world, it would be running without a doubt. However, having busted my right knee in a bike crash, it would probably require a lot of surgery to get to a point where I could run as much as I'd want to if it was my only hobby. So, I'd say the bike for sure. I spent the last year since my knee surgery mostly cycling and saw some pretty big gains. I don't think I am cut out for bike racing (not aggressive enough) but I love the challenge of hanging with the A group on my weekly ride or finding a new Strava segment to go after. I did a TT this summer and really enjoyed it, plan on doing a series of those and maybe state champ TT next year. I find I can ride a LOT and barely feel fatigued the way I would if I ran a lot. |

I get twitches in my tricep, bicep and the worst, my eyelid! It comes and goes but I will go for periods of a few days where it does it off and on. I've never found a way to make it stop, it just eventually does on it's own. |

Docs should prob weigh in but Im guessing you have a bit of impingement from all the weight work you've been doing. Maybe take a break from some of the upper body/shoulder lifting for a few days. Probably wouldn't hurt to try the foam roller or stick. |

Because you are good at it? Because you enjoy it the most? Because you think logistically it is easiest? Just curious. Tough question; when I'm training, I'm very balanced in all three sports and I enjoy all three. That said, logistically, swimming is the least convenient for me so if it's a time issue, that's out. I love running and usually do well both in triathlons and the odd running race but since I bike commute, that's the sport I'm able to be the most consistent with in the least amount of time. However, I'm definitely a triathlete, not a swimmer, cyclist or runner (even if I've only raced twice in the past two years) Shane |

![]() Just noticed that since starting endurance sports (training for my first marathon in 2009), I've just eclipsed 4000 miles of running. 4005.05 to be exact. Thats in about 41 months, so almost 100 miles per month average. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, I gotta say I am with Shane on this one - just based on the question as asked ("if time was a limiter...") I would honestly have to say that I would just suck more at triathlon. I really do think of it as its own discrete sport instead of a series of events on which you try to be well balanced (like the decathlon). To be competitive my friends that are single sport focused spend as much time on that sport as I do on triathlon (the swimmers actually spend more time...) That said I do understand the gist of the question (if for some reason you could only run, bike, or swim, which would it be?) i would have to say I would either do ultra mountain biking or ultra trail running. My real passion is orienteering-style mult-day adventure racing though, but I came back to long-course triathlon a few years ago simply due to time constraints. So I guess that really is my final answer: if I was time constrained and could only focus on one sport, I would pick triathlon. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll weigh in on the 'which sport' question with a view to the longer term. My initial reaction would have been running because it's easy to fit in my lifestyle and I really do enjoy it. Ive always traveled a good bit for work. I'm not fast but I love training for longer events. But if I had to choose only one sport it would be swimming. Why? Not because Im any good at it..it's my weakest sport of the 3. Rather, it's a great lifetime sport/activity. I seem to be injury prone and as I get older that is becoming a bigger issue. I could see myself swimming 20 years from now. Running, I'm not so sure unfortunately. Edited by kcarroll 2012-11-08 7:30 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Which sport of the three? That's a tough one... If I could OWS for longer than 3 months a year (nearly the same boat as Arend), I would love to do that...one of my favorite, favorite things to do is an early morning swim in a local pond as the sun is rising. There is an island in the middle and a loop from the dock around the island is just about a mile. I could swim that over and over again. However - with my current geographic constraints, the amount of pool swimming I (would) have to do as a single sport would make me mental. I enjoy riding my bike, and agree - it is one of the easiest from a social standpoint (you can pretty much always find someone to go on a bike ride with you), and it is also a fantastic way to get a more intimate perspective of the countryside. And (this will be heresay for some of you), I actually look forward a tiny bit for winter when I can ride my trainer. We don't have television, and that becomes the time when I can watch videos/tv shows/movies from Netflix or Hulu. Ultimately, if I could guarantee no injuries - I would chose running for the pure simplicity of it. I can get up and go with nothing more than a pair of sneakers. If I'm home, I get to bring my dog. I get to be outside (mostly). I live in the boonies (our town has a population of around 5,000 and we are one of the larger towns in the county I live in) - so running down the side of the road means running past farmland, pastures, forests, ponds, lakes, etc. Also, because it is such a rural area - I feel pretty safe running by myself. I know 80% of the people that drive past me while running, and 100% of the people running past me. I might have a different perspective if I lived in a big city. Fortunately - I don't have to chose, so I'm sticking with triathlon. |

Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If I ever manage to lose this pestersome triathlon/Ironman obsession ... Which, sadly but fondly, I will within a year or two ... I am definitely in it for the marathon swimming. I am never happier than when I'm out on or preferably in the open ocean. I dread "regular" pool workouts, even up to 4K, but for some reason I'm totally okay if it's going to be 11-12K. I don't understand it myself, but I hated running until I got into some double-digit mile runs. I really fell in love with distance swimming when I did the 10K. Couldn't wait to do it again, ocean pool or combo, so I was right back in the soup the next day I really do want to become a world-class marathon swimmer and do the Lombok Strait swim (to start with I can't explain it, but something mystical happens when I fully surrender to a long swim. It's like I get to live in a perfect space right between two worlds that I both love. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pick one? Probably running. It seems to be most forgiving to the slow. The race scene is friendly to guys like me. Bking, no way. But I also have this crazy idea to follow Yanti into marathon swimming. I need to fix my 2:30/100 stroke before I take that seriously. In other news, I discovered speed work. I am a Girls on the Run coach. Our lesson yesterday had a session of freeze tag where the coaches are permanent "it." My legs are stiff today. The girls discovered side stitches. It was a workout. |

Picked up my 910 across the border yesterday, and then spent the whole day shopping with my wife for Xmas gifts. Didn't come away with as much as we hoped, but that's okay - it was a fun day out. Got home and immediately had to try out the new toy on the bike. It paired right up with the PT, so it was a double bonus since I've been without power for the past two months. Power numbers seemed to be in the range of what I was seeing in the past, but I only played around for 15min. Either way, I'm really happy to have both now. I'll be trying out the 910 in the pool at lunch. Question. How do you zero torque your PT with a 910? I did this before every ride with the yellow CPU. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh - and of the three sports, I really enjoy both running and riding, but if it came down to it, I've probably got most of my natural ability tied up in running. If I actually dedicated the time to it, I think I'd be a decent runner. |

Andy, you can start taking it seriously today. Developing a more efficient, sustainable stroke may be a part of that, and you may not have easy access to a pool today, but today's always the best day to start taking anything seriously that you want to. Also, long-migrating whales do best with a good layer of blubber. HA that's what I keep telling myself ... |
