OK, sorry to vent, but...

I just found out that I will be unable to participate in the Arizona marathon that I was scheduled to do on Jan 17.  I have to travel for work, and the last flight from Arizona that would get me where I need to go in time for the meeting leaves Arizona at 12:10pm on Jan 17.  Considering that I will need 4+ hours to run the race, and the race starts at 7:40am, there is no way I can do the race and make the flight to .  (Plus, I have to eat the entry fee and the airline ticket.)

UGGHHHH.

I know that, in light of all the economic trouble the country is experiencing, I should count my blessings about having a job, etc.  but it is still frustrating.  I was really looking forward to doing this -- it was going to be my first marathon, I was going to stay with some close friends who are the parents of my godson, etc.

I guess I need to retool my 2010 racing schedule and come up with a substitute race.  Any ideas?  I am doing the Florida HIM in May, so I do not want to interfere with that.

Thanks.

Tough luck on the race.  Kepp your trainng up and stay positive and then blend into your HIM training and focus on that.  Next fall there are plenty of marathons that you can get in.  It has to be frustrating but use the fitness base that you have to get a head start on your HIM plan.

SSMinnow - 2010-01-04 5:49 PM Now, I really need some heavy duty positive vibes coming to Wisconsin.  Remember I told you about my friend Bob?  He went home on New Year's Eve after having several tests to determine what caused the aneurism.  They never found out, but said he was good to go.  I just got off the phone with his wife.  He was rushed back to the hospital with another aneurism, this one burst and he is paralyzed and cannot speak more than a word at a time none of which makes sense.  Neurosurgeon is talking to her shortly about options.  He is one of my husband's very best friends....really sad.   Reminds me once again that life is too short to waste it....

Thoughts and many, many, many prayers go out to Bob and his family and to you and your husband.  Sounds like he is in good hands and hopefully things will take a turn for the best.

Just a thought for the MG....tell someone you work with that they are special and tell someone in your family that you love them....and do it every day to someone.

Steve

I wasn't going to chime in on your issues with the breathing because you know me and swimming    but I have been told I have a very good stroke...I just have no endurance...anyway...I have always been a left side breather only and started learning right side breathing last summer.  There were 2 things that REALLY helped me. One was the arm-pit breathing thoughts, but the biggest help was concentrating on my glide/reach/extension etc. with the "off" arm and that helped me maintain a better position in the water and also helped with the rotation needed to get my face where it needed to be.

In other words....slow down with the stroke, glide and extend the "off" arm and let the core rotate until the belly button is facing the side of the pool.  This will allow your face to rotate to a good breathing slot.  You MUST maintain a downward angle with the face and look back at the arm-pit otherwise you have the feeling of lifting your face.

Take that for what it is worth but those techniques helped me and within 3 weeks I was able to go both ways......well...you know what I mean.

Hope that helps.

ETA...It helped me to think about doing the "catch-up" drill in order to maintain my focus on the extension and rotation.  I tend to think about this drill a lot and it helps with my balance and positioning in the water.

Two questions on the highlighted stuff above.  What is the off arm? is it the extended arm?  and how can I get the extended arm to stay up longer?  I actually learned how to swim using the catch up drill and can keep my left arm out flippin' forever, but cannot do the same thing with the right one.....it is the most awkward feeling.

The "off arm" is the extended arm when you are taking a breath....if you are breathing on the left this would be your right arm.  The one that is extended in front.

Most people can extend better, longer and more balanced on their natural breathing side but if your "balance" (i.e. body position in the water) is equal then the breathing will equalize.  I got most of my terms and knowledge from the TI book and CD and the explanation of balance and head position there is second to none.

I still don't have as much glide while breathing on my right side but it is MUCH better than it was and the breathing from that side is almost automatic.  For me the "Ah Ha" moment was learning the glide while doing catch-up and feeling my body moving forward still powered by the last stroke and not hurrying to get the next arm pull started.

Hope this helps explain....I love talking about swimming...I just don't love getting in the water and swimming for hours.    of course you know that already, don't you Suzy

Yay! I went for my first swim today. Did 27 minutes worth and 3 min worth in "Walker's/Exercise" pool...which is a lot warmer than the lap pool...great way to cool down!

I used my Timex Lap watch to record this, but I also lapped the times that I was "resting".  So the numbers are all over the place. Is there a website or easy application (or does SportTracks have it?) that I can just put down the splits, and meters (yeah, the pool is 25 meters, not yards), and have it automatically counted then I can record it correctly on the TL here?

Very sorry to hear about your friend, Suzy. And that really sucks (on a different level) about your marathon, Tobey. Hopefully both situations will end up better than they seem right now.

About weight loss, I'm already having a hard time sticking to my clean eating plan. I am a sugar junkie and my husband is too, so we have a lot of crap food in our house. He is not interested in cleaning up his diet and would think it cruel and unusual punishment if I cleared the house of his treats. Neither of us is overweight, my goal is just to firm back up to where I was before the injury.

The problem is that I can't resist temptation. I have huge sugar cravings after dinner and I had room in my calorie intake for the day for a chocolate chip cookie, so I ate one. But that turned into three! I don't want to cut it out completely (I don't know if I even could!) but I also don't know if I have the ability to stop after only a small portion. Yell

I remember last year when I really started to swim, I would lose track all the time of my lengths. One thing I started to do when I got into longer swims was count by 10's on the numbers of lengths. Easier to remember.

With you all the way.. "We don need no steenken 25 yd pools"

I use a very high tech  method of keeping track of my lengths. I use 2 flippers. as I reach 10 lengths I flip one over. After another 10 flip it again. ( same direction not back on top of the other one. )If I lose count all I have to do is count the number of flips to get them back together and X 10.

Try alternating days - Its okay to have a cookie tomorrow, just not today...  Then have a cookie the next day...  or set up a internal reward system - if I get in my workouts today and tomorrow, then I can have a sweet...  Just try spacing them out a little...  In essence, give your body hope of sugar in the future, not a total abstaining (is that a word?)

I always try to substitute sweet tasting things for the actual sweets.  I will eat sugar free jello or sugar free/fat free pudding with some lite cool whip.  Doesn't eliminate the calories but can feel like a little more substance than just one cookie and helps me to keep the sweet cravings in check.

Congrats on the first swim!  I don't have a good suggestion for counting laps or adding up the time.  To make it easier, you can just log the total time and not concern yourself with distance at this point until you get more comfortable.  If you want to know your pace, you can do regular time trials at a set distance to see how you are progressing without having to worry about counting every lap of every work out.

I am a little obsessive about knowing my distance so I count them all but there are plenty of times where I miss count and swim an extra 50 or 100 yards.  It is pretty obvious on the watch when you mis-count after you get used to your pace and expected time for a giving length.

Watch out hear comes a tangent.....
Suzy your post about your hubbie's friend got my thinking tonight......
We are all for here for so many different reasons. I will leave the definition of 'here' for you to decide.
I just read to my oldest(4) and put her to bed. Seeing her and her sister sleeping makes my heart melt and I tear every once in a while watching them grow up. But seeing them grow up before my eyes is why I am here. I want to see them grow up. I want to see them succeed.I want to see them get married.
When I look at where I was 2 years ago with my health(FAT!!!), and where I am right now, its night and day. I'm not 'Thin', but I'm healthy. Still a slow runner, but as long as I beat Andy at Lonestar my mission is complete
Being 'here' has changed my outlook on life.

It's one of those things I guess. To piggy back off of steve earlier today - Sometimes we do take things for granted with our health or our family or how fast we can run a 5k or swim a mile. But really, who knows when things can be taken away from us. We need to enjoy what we have, we never know when lifewill throw us a major curveball. I mean major.
Suzy A good example right now is referencing you with your running. As a  runner, this last month or so must be so extremely hard on you.....But at the end of day, when you look at it....It's short term. So what if you can't run for a bit?? It's not literally going to kill you. Its all about perspective and I realize that now.
It's that sweating the small stuff phrase.
I tend to overthink things. I get upset at myself when I have a bad swim. Or crappy run. Or have a bad day at work.
But, these things are so minor in the grand scheme of things. I, and my family, have their health right now and at the end of the day I am so thankful for that.
Thanks for listening. I need a hot chocolate now.

The end.

Yell

You should meet my wife George. She is all about fat-free pudding and whip cream. That is her treat for herself at least twice a week. It has to be the whip cream that you spray on. Can not be from a tub. Its about smarter choices.
