Ta-da!!! No HIM. Did I miss something? No HIM? Decided I didn't want to maintain HIM training for 7 additional weeks Wise woman! Signing up for races is so cool anyway ... and Oly will still be a good challenge. |

I can go ahead and pass on what she said, but before I do that Is this something that truly is necessary? I pretty much never go to the doctor. No. Also, serum ferritin isn't, by itself, that useful a number. I assume you know your diet's got good iron happening? (preferably not together with calcium or caffeine) Menstruation is regular and hasn't changed? Well, here is part of her post: So basically, check your goddamn ferritin, especially if you're:
I would recommend getting it checked once before every season or, if you don't race seasonally, right before you begin training for any given big goal race. Even if you're male and eat lots of delicious beef, I think it's important to get it checked out once in a while. Even if you take iron supplements, get it checked out.
I am only 50% of those things and love my red meat sooo I'm probably fine. I was anemic a looonnng time ago and have no idea if that is relevant information. My periods are kind of all over the board these days. In fact I just started and am mother-effing exhausted so I think it's setting me up to actually believe anything I read on the internets.
Serum ferritin isn't that useful. Hematocrit is more useful as part of of an H/H (hemaglobin/hematocrit) and they can do a whole host of tests. If you are super exhausted, I recommend getting a full CBC done. Anemia isn't always iron-deficiency, it can also be vitamin b dependent. You could also have problems with your thyroid or just be working too hard. In short, yes, maybe it's time for a doc, but don't just ask about iron. If you eat red meat fairly regularlly and green veggies, you are probably not iron-deficient. |

I do know about issues of long-distance runners (particularly female) and iron deficiency, but you're probably not going to keel over and die tomorrow even if you were. Fortunately, it's easily reversible. If you started having low energy and not being able to bust out workouts that normally are easy, yes, it's a major red flag and probably the first thing to look at (for a female distance runner) along with hemoglobin levels. If you eat red meat a couple times a week (as I said preferably without caffeine and calcium, and preferably with a Vit C source), and you otherwise also eat iron-rich foods, you're fine. Until you're not. Then worry about it. P.S. Have your periods always been all over the map or just lately? Uhhh, well I can't say that in the past I tracked it ALL that carefully (for obvious reasons ) but in the last year or so I felt it was becoming really inconsistent so I actually did start tracking it and yes, indeed it has become a little random. Def. not on a consistent cycle. Like I said, I can't absolutely confirm this is true because I wasn't tracking it. Do you recall what kind of anemia you had before / cause? Are you seeeeerrrrrrious??? Of course I don't! But it happened after I had mono in college. That's actually a fairly common complication/effect/co-morbidity of mono. Okay, so ... given that you're not cycling consistently and you feel like it's been more inconsistent (whether or not you have hard numbers), and that you're wiped out at the beginning of your cycle (and it's not just generally feeling awful because it's that time of the month, but really more fatigued than usual and affecting your runs), yeah, I think it would be worth it to have some testing done (helps to have a baseline anyway), especially if it would be covered by insurance and not too much of a hassle. If it's something you'd have to fork hundreds of bucks out of pocket for, nope. There's a few things you could test for if it's anemia / iron deficiency you're concerned about, but honestly, serum iron and serum ferritin, and TIBC (total iron binding c-something, count maybe?) will pretty much tell the story and even out of pocket that shouldn't run more than $50 or so (unless a clinic starts tacking on nurse's fees and doctor's fees and stuff, argh!) Hemoglobin won't be affected until you're really SOL ... er s-out-of-iron so not that important but it's also cheap and fast. |

I DO get these benign cysts (hawt right?) and every once in a while have to get them removed and I have one now but am going to wait until after Boston because I can't afford the recovery time. I was probably just going to save my doctor stuff for that and do it all at once. I used to get SAD but feel the running has nearly eliminated it. Saturday is the AHL Alumni Classic, former Hershey Bears vs. former Wilkes-Barre Penguins, played outside at Hersheypark Stadium! Lots of awesome names on the roster. Sunday is the first Frozen Foot race (5K, 3 race series Jan-March). Can't stick around for the raffle or awards, not that I'd get one, (but will most certainly grab some chicken noodle soup before I roll) because I have to get home to go to the AHL Outoor Classic, current Bears vs. current Penguins. So psyched to have the outdoor games right in our backyard! My plan is also to sneak away over lunch next week during work and public skate on the outdoor rink before they tear it down. Thankfully I work about 5 minutes or so from the Hershey complex. B-E-A-R-S, Bears, Bears, Bears, WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! |

My husband (A) only goes to the urgent care clinic at work if he really has to and hasn't seen a regular doc since we got married 8 years ago. I should start working on him now so he goes by the time it's 10 years. |

Asalzwed - 2013-01-18 12:46 PM Don't tell anyone, but I have seen in the comfort of my own home: Lincoln, zero dark 30, silver lining play book, argo, this is 40, and some other films. I may watch django tonight.I am jealous of those who have a 3 day weekend, but still hope you enjoy it.Artemis - 2013-01-18 12:44 PM Asalzwed - 2013-01-18 1:39 PM Oh my goodness we have a 3 day weekend. MLK only got added to our holiday list last year. I'm going snowboarding on Sunday and I think cross country skiing on Monday. I'm going to be all adult-like and wear my helmet since it might be icy. That's a first! Ohhh and we are doing a brewery tour tomorrow. Anyone doing anything fun this weekend? I have a snow day today! It's almost melted. Gotta love the South. Tomorrow, E and I are spending the day without daddy (he gets a day off to play board games). We are going to walk around a shopping area: packet pickup for me, shopping for her. Should be fun. Sunday is my race. We are getting a sitter in the afternoon to go shooting for hubby's birthday gift. Monday, E is going to daycare. I am going to a movie! Do you know what movie?
