Been a while since I've had a 100 mile month Awesome!!!! That is great! Are you still second guessing doing a marathon? I am pretty sure I am going to downgrade to the HM. As much as I want to do it it's just not the right now. There's always a fall marathon where I can do a proper build. Marathon training isn't something I should rush |

![]() | ![]() riorio - 2013-01-28 3:55 PM Glad I got a short run and swim in today...it might be a while before I do it again. I went to meet with the surgeon at the dermatologists, just for a consult, ended up hobbling out with 6 stitches in the side of my foot. They are pretty confident that they removed the dangerous mole and got the clear margins, however the wound is pretty big and will need some time to heal. The good news is that my "mole" was reviewed by 3 separate pathologists and sent to the Univ of San Fransisco before they came up with a diagnosis, at least I got my money's worth out of my high deductible! I also just got Netflix and my hubby connected our computer to the TV so I can catch up on some TV in my spare time that i am not training! The bad news is that I have to stay off the foot and I planned a big family dinner/birthday party for my son this evening, and now I have to call in sick tomorrow to work. Luckily I prepped the dinner yesterday and baked an awesome cake last night! At least they are thinking they got it all. If you read your sentence quick enough it reads like you connected your hubby to the computer. Heal fast! |

![]() | ![]() Asalzwed - 2013-01-28 2:58 PM I think it comes down to what works for you. As you have probably heard, there isn't anything magical about 20 miles or two and a half hours per se. WHAT? The 20 miler is not magical? Here is what was explained to me regarding the 20 miler. If you run your 20 miler at a nice easy pace time wise it comes out to what you should run your marathon for. That of course implies you have done the work to have that extra speed to get the gears you need and hold it for 26.2 miles. That not make sense? It was years and years ago that I was told that and I know that things change all the time as they do more research |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Asalzwed - 2013-01-28 4:58 PM Ahhh, the time vs. distance dilemma. I think it comes down to what works for you. As you have probably heard, there isn't anything magical about 20 miles or two and a half hours per se. I think what Kim said about training through the week to support the long run is really important. The more you can put in during the week, reducing the percentage of overall weekly volume your long run is, is more important than exactly how long (time or distance) you should go. Additionally, it's important that your long run isn't wiping you out and setting you off on the wrong foot for the rest of your week. So, it kind of works both ways and it's all about finding that balance. Finally, structure your weeks so you build your volume for about 3 weeks and then step back for a week and collect yourself, then back to building. Most stock programs are structured this way. x2 (or 3 or whatever it is). The down weeks can be 'as needed' if you are rolling your own plan as you go. (Sometimes I need one after 2 weeks, sometimes I can go 5 or 6 before I feel like I need one.) If you are a plan-ahead-and-stick-to-the-plan kind of person, every 4th is a good way to go. Some people do every 3rd. |

Luckily I prepped the dinner yesterday and baked an awesome cake last night! Glad to hear that it seems to have went well. When I was off my feet for a while (and unable to swim) I used a handcycle at our gym. You can get a pretty good workout on those things and there is zero impact to feet. Obviously not tri-specific in any way, but it does maintain a bit of cardio fitness and it feels good to get some sort of workout. Might be worth looking into if you have access to one. |

I have 4200scy in the books from masters this morning. I had some 1-on-1 help with getting my elbow up a bit on my pull. Thanks everyone for the swim discussion late last week - been looking forward to putting it to practice today. A little later today I have moderate climb repeats on one of our little local "mountains." 1.5 miles bottom to top at an steady average grade of 11.5%. More of a strength workout than a threshold session, although I will be working to keep my cadence up a bit more than usual. Weather is a bit nutty here as well - should be close to 70 degrees today, but predicting strong storms, 2" of rain, and temperature dropping all day tomorrow to close to freezing. Yuck. |

Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() itsallrelative_Maine - 2013-01-29 2:55 AM ChrisM - 2013-01-27 1:15 PM Sunday had a nice hilly 8 mile run (with two sub 8:00 miles - yip!), then 3700 swim in the afternoon. For some reason I asked my coach to give me a Sunday swim third day. It was a killer, and put me on the coach. Recovering today Wow - that's not like any coach I know! (jk) I know the time vs distance debate has probably been covered...but it has recently reared it's ugly head in my training plan. I typically go by distance because I'm slow (not bothered by being slow - just realistic) and I figured for my confidence, I needed to know that I could cover the distance. This is all fine and good when training for shorter races - but I've got a marathon on the calendar right now...it doesn't seem like the smartest thing to run the full distance a couple of weeks out from the race. Rusty recommended flipping to time (have the long runs be at least 2:30 - 3:00)...but at my paces - that's only around 18 miles on a fast day for me. Is that enough? And to re-iterate what Kim said earlier - it is hard being slow training for a marathon...that's a significant chunk of time (especially if you are going by distance). I've got a 5:10:5:10:5:15 week which equates to about 10 hours of running. (as I'm typing this, I'm doing the math for the 7:14:7:14:7:21 week...crap). Any advise? Recommendations? What should the longest run be by distance/time and why? Yanti - you rock...your goal is getting to the starting line at IMNZ...you've already missed the ER to IM timeline - so you should be good to go - right? That is a wonderful reminder You got some very good feedback regarding time, distance, long run, and general structuring ... Salty said something about the long run not wiping out your following week and, while it was the proverbial straw that broke (just slightly dented, thankfully) the camel's back among many other straws, I did put an unnecessary dent in myself with a long run that shouldn't have been done that way (or perhaps at all, or delayed a few days). I also slammed a car door on my ankle. Ouch. Literal dent. There really isn't a magic long run number (or time). Something to consider is how much you want out of the long run(s), how much they're likely to take out of you, and whether your life, desires and goals could accommodate an alternate schedule that includes more frequency with medium and medium-long runs during the week rather than several long-long runs over the course of the training period. |

So say your training run takes you 4 hours to get your 20 miles, the thought is your marathon at 26.2 will also take 4 hours. |

Mean SOB (think it's Shane - right?). Yup! 5' and 20' bike tests for me this week! I have those lined up for Friday as well...FUN! My goal on the bike 14 weeks ago was 305W FTP (starting from 286..now at 298 after week 8 test) which would be a 7% improvement. I would be really happy with that considering I thought that would be a stretch when I started. |
