Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by jmkizer Racing Manatees!!! Alcatraz was amazing! The swim was tough with a small watercraft advisory and I overshot the finish by about 20-30 yards (trying to correct myself from the practice swim I did the day before and got too close to shore too early according to the coach). The cyclist for my relay did great so I only waited about 80 min before I was off for the run - it was way more brutal of a run course than I was expecting. I knew it would be hilly and beach and sand ladder, but wow! I will have my race report soon. I was distracted last week with the Caps Stanley cup games (literally flew home from SF early to make it to a game). |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This is a non tri or any type of training post! i know most of the manatees have dogs and am wondering if any use this product. The little creep is microchipped, but that only works if someone finds him and checks for it. This is a gps, so you can find your pet wherever s/he may be ( as long as there is cell service). Im wondering about this since Teddy jumped the fence yesterday! Also, when we go to the mountains I’d like to not worry when he runs around off lead. |

As you may recall, the time that Zoe ran off, she was within sight of me playing catch-me-if-you-can. I certainly understand your concerns and the desire to have him off lead when running/hiking in the mountains. It's difficult to have a leash and not get all tangled up in stuff. The problem is that in the WNC mountains, there's a good chance that you won't have cell coverage -- at least around Brevard/Pisgah/DuPont. With previous dogs, we were able to teach them to "check in." They could run ahead on the trail and then when they returned, either because we called them or because they wanted to, they get a treat. I suspect that this could be an issue with Zoe since she has a high prey drive. Then again, Hannah had a high prey drive and was excellent at this -- of course Hannah had a stronger desire to please mom than Zoe seems to! |

This looks like an AT&T network exclusive which could be problematic. Double-check that this will work for you. |

I'd have thought that in the last 5-10 years since Kevin was big into whitewater kayaking (pre mtb obsession), AT&T would have upped their game but from what I have seen on Reddit Asheville, that is not the case |

Also, I thought at some point he could end up where there is service. I kept him on a long line for his first mountain outing because he was so young and untrained. He will be more trained when we go back in August, but he has such a strong hunting instinct that I’m afraid when he gets locked in on something he’ll be off! Around the cabin I’m not too concerned, but on the trails... i definitely remember when Zoe ran off from you! Damn dogs!! |

Many the people I go there with have AT&T and I definitely have better coverage. However, at&t has gotten better and better, so I can’t taunt them with my superiority too much anymore |

I really like the concept, however the way it attaches to their collars is not very good IMO. I'm talking about the part that stays on the collar all the time (and then there's the gps part that has to be charged). I have gone through several for each dog in 6 months. A couple times I was able to find the tracker and reattach it. One is lost in my backyard for good. Two have been chewed because they became a toy once they fell off. I checked a few other products though, and whistle really seems to be the best for my needs, especially since I'd already paid a full year monthly subscription fee. Whistle replaced 2 of the lost/broken units, but outside of that I had to pay for new ones which can get pricey. I'm sure there is a way to secure the unit to the collar that goes beyond what they provide, but I haven't figured it out yet (nor have I tried super hard, in fact I'm hesitating to put their latest replacement units on them until I find a way). |

Looks like all the bad reviews were about a year old. I wonder if they've worked through the issues. Those are some really bad reviews! I've had my whistles since January and haven't encountered any of the issues that are in those reviews. My biggest complaint is how they attach it to the collar (rubber band that goes around the collar and attaches to a 1-2mm piece of plastic). I am also surprised that they have no function to find it once it falls off. When they are within wifi range, it doesn't use gps, so unless you lose it outside of wifi, you just know it's at home somewhere. I've gone through the effort of turning off my house wifi to try to pinpoint it, but even then it didn't seem 100% accurate (not sure they claim it to be). That said, I have never had to locate my dogs once they got out of the "home area". Whenever I have taken them in the car away from my house, my phone sends me an alert pretty quickly. It basically catches the fact that the unit is no longer on your wifi network and sends the alert. Once it's working off gps only, it doesn't constantly update. You can open the app and tell it to update. I've found it to be pretty accurate when my dogs are at the vet or daycare. I have gotten a few false alerts but it usually updates pretty quickly. I went with whistle off the recommendation of a friend, though her dogs are much older and less active so staying on the collar is probably not an issue. When I lost the trackers for the third time, I looked at other options and there are definitely competing companies. If I hadn't already purchased the subscription for whistle, I probably would have switched as other companies seem to get pretty decent reviews: |

If I hadn't already purchased the subscription for whistle, I probably would have switched as other companies seem to get pretty decent reviews: Living here in WNC. Cell service is so spotty, I wouldn't rely on anything like that. Especially hiking. You go around a curve and boom! No service. Heck, I live 2 miles from 2 giant cell towers and can't get cell service at my house. Just my 2 cents. |

I think that it's happening when I go to Community > Friends and access the logs from there. When I accessed them from my roster, no issues. ETA: Or when I tried to respond to your Inspire!
