tricrazy - 2011-05-14 11:16 AM So, here's a question.  How do you guys deal with the rain when you are riding?  I had a 55 miler today but it was raining so hard I couldn't see.  I hopped on a SAG because I just didn't feel safe.  How do you all do it?

Wow, you are so hardcore, Rachel.  Honestly, there are LOTS of times I just do my ride on the trainer even if the weather is just so-so.  That's me, though, I don't mind the trainer at all, I know I get a good workout in and I'm safe.  I did my 60 miler on my trainer on Monday and it was actually sunny out.  I know.  Lame!

Were you wearing eye protection?  I always wear my Oakley half jackets, even when it's overcast or cloudy, as eye protection...but if it's just buckets, I say you did the right thing!

I was wearing Oakleys.  I guess I am just bummed b/c I bailed and I am not a quitter by nature so doing so rubs me the wrong way.

I'm with Kim, I'll hit the trainer if there is any question on weather and biking.  I am a very nervous rider.

I think you are smart.  Better safe and sound.

I think you do need to have some experience riding in the rain in the event you have a race like Birdy and Roni had a few years ago.  I think once you have that experience, it's enough.  I bagged a ride 20m early in 35-40mph because I didn't feel safe.  Figured I rode 33m in it and knew how to slide on my fanny when I got tipped over.  Ride over!  Safety first.

X2 on getting experience in rain.  the first time i ever rode in the rain was last yr in a race with over 5000 people.  Not the time to get experience, I was so stressed and tense that my hands cramped because I was holding the aerobars so tight.  As a result, I had a harder time hydrating/holding on to the water bottle.

I have in the rain a lot. It takes practice. Whether I will go out in it depends a lot on other factors such as wind, temperature, darkness and most important what has the weather been for the preceeding days. If it has been dry the previous days then I will not go out as the rain will bring any oil out of the roadway making it too dangerous. The tendancy is to grip your bars tightly in the rain which can be bad and which will tire you out very fast.

If you have other options, like a trainer, do that. There are sunny days that I ride the trainer just in case I have to end early due to family matters, or because of a tight schedule. No shame in that.

I try my hardest to avoid rain rides... If it rains when I'm out, I deal. But I won't start a ride in anything more than a light drizzle, and even then I will modify my routes to do more trail time if possible. If I were you I'd hop the SAG too!!!

Same here.  I got my first really good rain practice in an Oly last summer - torrential downpours for about 50 minutes of the time I was on the bike (like Birdy's photo and maybe harder).  It was raining so hard it hurt.  Luckily the course was flat and the race support staff did a fantastic job warning people about upcoming turns.    One other lesson I learned in that race is that you want to have a pair of sunglasses with yellow lenses.  I toughed it out in my darker lenses because there was no way I could have ridden without the eye cover.

Good luck to all the racers.   Great group pic. Everyone is looking great.  Glad to hear the weather out there is god. I would love to be there even just to cheer you guys on.
I have ridden in the rain several times and actually don't mind it at all as long as it is warmish. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the drivers and how careful they are.  If it's raining when I am ready to start I don't go but I have been caught several times when I thought I could get in a ride before it started to rain. It was raining so hard one day I was traveling faster than the traffic. The down side was that I had to stand in a hot shower for about 20 minutes to warm up. I definitely use yellow lens on cloudy days.
Awesome Kyla. Sound like you are doing several Ironman races this weekend in training.
Do we have any other race numbers. I've been away for a couple of days and haven't had time to catch up on all the threads.
