?So I went running last night outside, great night for it. About a mile into it some yahoo was texting while driving, saw me and I really thought I was going to get hit, he swerved, I jumped and landed awkward in a semi pot hole... wham, left knee instant pain. Tried running again and it hurt, bad. Was able to walk home about a mile at a good pace but couldn't run. Went home, iced, took some anti flam meds and then put the TENS on it.  Woke up feeling ok.... doing 2 x 10min at threshold tonight, we will see how it feels.

The last thing I need is an injury due to irresponsible people.

Good lord - Hope you feel better soon!  People can be idiots. The # of people I notice texting, chatting, etc. while Im running against traffic is scary.  Wear bright clothes, be aware of everything around you.  Even when runnign w/ music, it's background noise level so I can hear things around me.  You can not be too careful!

I finally had some luck with my nutrition on the bike this past weekend and feel that about 250-280 calories per hour did me good. Do I aim for the same amount on the run? In my marathons I normally use Gu gels. By the time I'm done with the marathon my stomach doesn't feel so hot. What kind of nutrition will you guys use on the run? When you are doing the running portion of the IM is it better to take in more sport drink than gels for calories? I suppose this can be different for everyone. I'm thinking I will practice with banannas and the bonk breakers since they are on the course, plus a gu here and there. I will take in water with perform too.

Athletes typically handle fewer calories/hr on the run than on the bike. If you're shooting for 250-280/hr on the bike, I'd try 180-200/hr in run training and adjust up or down from there.

I use perform and gels on the bike, and by the time the marathon rolls around I'm pretty sick of them. I think in my last IM I switched to coke and water at mile 3 or 4 and stuck with that until the end. I maybe had 1 or 2 gels the rest of the way, but what your stomach can handle and what is going to be appealing to you at that point of the day is pretty individual. I know coke works well for me, but I know other people who don't touch coke the entire day.

I have always thought of Coke being used at the near end of the run (miles 22 - 26 or so).  Its pure sugar and is needed energy, no doubt.  But in the begining of the run I would think you still need complex carbohydrates as you have hours of racing to go.  Any thoughts on this?

Wow...I love it when you talk osmolality!! I was using Endurolytes but truthfully I didn't use them on a set schedule and just took 2 before and 2 after the bike. Didn't take any on the run. Since it wasn't a scorcher of a day in 2010 I wasn't as concerned with consuming them regularly. Probably why I ran into the issues. Nothing that killed me, but when I finished I didn't really want to eat anything till around midnight when we went back into town. Then I couldn't stop eating!

Endurolytes actually don't give you that much salt per pill as compared to some other ones on the market (e.g. SaltStick, etc.). If you're doing a lot of straight water or coke (or anything that doesn't have electrolytes in it), you're gonna want to add some electrolytes through pills because that will make the fluids absorb faster and hopefully prevent sloshing.

Are you planning on going to JT next weekend?

Sure, but this guy knows a lot more than me about this topic: http://www.firstendurance.com/2011/03/carbohydrates-and-endurance-clearing-up-the-confusion/

My main takeaways from that: fast absorption is good, the main complex carbohydrate (maltodextrin) used in sports products is fast absorbing.

Good stuff.  Lots of further nutritional reading posted in some of the replies.  Thanks.

Some Friday afternoon Bike P0rn.  This was halfway point of my bike ride today.  I call her blue steel because of the movie Zoolander.  When Ben Stiller makes that face he sucks his cheeks in and this is my first (and only) carbon bike, and I loved how the frame (forks, nose, seat and chain stays) of the bike is sucked in and curved inward -- for aerodynamics.  Something you can't really do with aluminum.

Anyways, she's all Race Ready for my mini-Sprint on Sunday.  She's got new bar tape, new selle italia seat, new blue Michelin Pro3's, new michelin latex tubes, Blue Steel is ready to Rock all 6 of those miles on Race Day Sunday

DC-

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Sweet ride. Looks super fast just sitting there. And nice colors.

Hang on tight and eat up the road!

No luck is needed when there is skill-but it is BEST to be good AND lucky.

Good luck this weekend.

DC,

That's a very sweet ride--I particularly like the matching bar tape, frame and tires. Well done! I don't think you'll need it with that sweet setup, but good luck in your race!

So does anyone else find themselves while they're in the middle of their rides/runs think about where you'll be on race day?

i.e.:

Mile 15: Just finished the Keene descent

Mile 32: Headed back to Jay from Ausable Forks

Mile 53: The Bears

Or look at the clock and think about where they should be? As in it's currently 4:11PM, hopefully I'll be around mile 8 on the run...

Nice and clean ride, Monty. I like it. And don't Zipps just look so good.

I do that a week or two before the race.  Nowadays I just have same songs playing over and over in my head.

Sweet setup, DC! - Looks like it has a chance to be the second fasted P2 at Lake Placid.

But PLEASE tell me you photoshopped that sign into the background - you didn't REALLY lean your top tube against a metal pole, did you????? It kinda hurt my eyes just to look at that - I had to quickly look away.... Good luck this weekend.

Good eye Rusty.  For the sake of symetrical photography, Yes ... Yes I did.  But I leaned it gingerly and there was no wind at that precise moment.  I also have plenty of scuff marks on my top tube from the bottom of my cleat.  I've also had the bike since Spring of 2009 so the honeymoon period is long over.

I didn't know any Pro's were also riding a P2?  Well, hey, I'll give you 3rd fastest.
