ChrisM - 2012-11-10 11:47 AM Threatened rain never materialized. Nice but cold ride (cold for us, 50 degrees) with 2 good climbs. 3 hours then ez 3 mile run off the bike

We actually had some wicked hail here.  50 is a hard temp to gear up for, especially when you are doing hills.  Easy to go from cold to warm and back again over and over again

Yikes! It ended up being nice down here in the valley, just breezy but tomorrow am is supposed to be chilly with chance of freezing out where I am! Stay warm up there. Granola sounds yummy!

2x20 @ 242w on the trainer done.  Not nearly as bad as I was expecting!

I changed the cassette on my bike from an 11-28 to a 12-25 as I kept feeling like I was stuck between gears on the trainer and what a difference!  I'm in love!  LOL

Nice!! Sounds like its time to go to 250+. . Ironically, just had an 11-28 put on my training wheel to replace an d 12-27. Absolutely rocking on today's climbs!

I love having the 11-28 outside, it (and the compact crank) saved my bacon at IMMT!

I have no idea what is on my bike.  How do you tell?  All I know for sure is it is a compact.

There might be an easier way but you can just count the teeth on the smallest and largest cogs of the cassette.

Lots of combinations available, I think 11-25 is perfectly valid.  To be honest, I'm not 100% sure mine is 12-25...

Fred D - 2012-11-10 6:11 AM I have to do an insurance physical this am. No coffee or eating until 9am. Grrrrr. I really like my coffee. Then I will ride and run today at some point. What's on tap for the group today?

I ran a hilly 25k this morning in 26 mph wind with 41 mph gusts. Crazy brutal. At least it was 70 degrees.

Well now I have completely confused myself.  According to this, the two cassettes that I swapped have the same gearing in the part of the cassette I was riding in (17-19-21) so I have no idea why I felt like the gearing was better today.

How'd it go?  The wind was probably a bit nice given the temps?  And it adds to the story of course.

GoFaster -

Thanks guys.  I like the NP lap info, since it seems to be a better indicator of actual power output vs average power.  The Garmin is set to lap every 5km, which I think is a good distance to make sure power is staying in line with expectations.

Depends what you are using 'lap' for.

If it is intervals in training that are under 2', then NP will not be a smart option as you don't get a good reading in the first 30sec.

If you are lapping every 20' sure maybe NP is ok, but NP is a better assessment of the overall ride itself IMHO than an interval.

Totally get it for the short intervals, and on the trainer it's redundant, but curious why you don't see the value outside.  Being able to see average power and NP for the same "lap" should give you a clearer picture of how hard you're working.  i.e. Had one lap today with avg power at 183 and NP at 212.  If I was ignoring NP I would look at that lap as a 75% effort, vs the 85% that it really was.

Here is what I would do.

Train with virtual power all winter. Know your FTP, do your intervals, improve your FTP.

Then in April, test your FTP. Let's say it gives 200 watts

Then a few days later do a 60 min ride at 80% of that, so 160watts. Look at your HR. That is your target HR for HIM.

That is the high level view of it. There are details such as the fact your HR will be elevated coming out of the water....

Edit : in theory this could also be used by people with a computrainer that got rid of their powermeter to buy a bad tri bike.....if such a thing existed of course...

Perfect...thanks!

By the way, you can do virtual power on Golden Cheetah for free. The number of trainers is more limited however. They only support a handful. Kurt and Cycleops fluid are supported.

Even better!...I have a 1UpUSA. Gonna look into it.

Fred D - 2012-11-10 7:11 AMWhat's on tap for the group today?

Was planning on at least a run, and possibly a trainer ride. But alas, it didn't happen. I am enjoying some brief down time before ramping up later this month. Spent the day on a 26 foot ladder trimming ivy and cleaning all of the second story windows...and since we're traveling for Thanksgiving, got the Christmas lights up! Built a bonfire in the yard for the kids - but couldn't find any marshmallows. I could almost count the day as a strength session!

Trying for a run tomorrow afternoon.

Edit: Watching UGA play for trip to Atlanta. GO DAWGS!

tri808 - 2012-11-10 2:18 PM Got in a very easy 8.5 mile run.  Going to watch our pathetic UH football team get smashed by Boise.  Will ride long tomorrow.

How did swimming with the band go Jason?

Forgot the band at home...I'll try to use it tomorrow night, or at worst on Monday.

It is cold in Payson this morning.  Snow from yesterday still on objects in the yard (but not the ground).  Hell with that, going to Sedona where it will be a bit warmer and get a hike in.  We are hiking to the floor of the Grand Canyon at the end of the month so need to get some quality hikes in.

It didn't go as I hoped, but it went as I should have expected. I should have put "ran" in quotes in my original post. I walked up most of the hills.

The wind didn't feel that great, honestly. It was nice having it at my back, but even then, it was too strong. But you're right. It would have been too warm without a wind. I would have preferred something a little more gentle.

But it could have been worse, and I can still walk this morning, even if it takes me a few minutes to get started.

There is a 5k Turkey Trot race here in Payson next weekend that I am thinking of entering.  As of right now 31 people are entered.  I like my odds on winning (last Payson race I was 2nd overall).  $40 is pretty steep though for a 5k and I missed the deadline to guarantee a shirt.  Humming and hawing.  I haven't raced in quite a while...

Went for a trail walk with my wife and the dogs this morning.  I didn't know this trail existed and it's only about 5km from my house!

Going out for a 1:20 run shortly.
