Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great night tonight, 80 minute tempo run, watching the hawkeyes (hopefully) win the Orange Bowl, not bad for the underdogs. Oh yeah my PT should be on the way now, not what I had been planning, but even better than I could have expected. Older PT SL 2.4 unit, upgraded to ANT+ laced into a HED Jet 60 clincher,98% of what I wanted, not the pro model, but now I have carbon bling$$$$ Now to hurry up and wait! and keep working out this week. My wife goes in for Lasik tomorrow, so it may be a short workout day, and finally back to the pool that has been closed for almost a week! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tobey91 - 2010-01-05 9:38 PM So, after my venting, it turns out that the meeting might be pushed back enough that I can do the AZ marathon and still make the meeting. But that raises a question that I would bet a number of people in this group might be able to weigh in on: The meeting I need to go to is in Europe. Within 3 or 4 hours of finishing the marathon, I would fly from Phoenix to Europe (unclear whether non-stop or one stop in the US before crossing the Atlantic). Should I have any fear about taking that long a flight immediatley after (hopefully) completing my first marathon? My wife is concerned, and cites the fact that one cannot fly within a certain amount of time of scuba diving. My response is that the reason the scuba diving rule exists is that the additional oxygen in your veins as a result of breathing underwater at several atmospheres of pressure could, in essence, expand when going to altitude and cause the bends/embolisms/etc. But I promised to ask this group to see if anyone had any insight. Thanks in advance. Not at all an expert (though I am an advanced scuba diver and always follow their fly rules closely)... I have flown from Chicago to CA within a few hours of finishing a marathon. The suckiest part was getting up out of my seat after the flight. I think the biggest risk is blood clots, but if you were good about getting up and walking around regularly (or doing exercises in your seat if you can't get up) I don't see why there would be a problem. Of course you'd want to hydrate like crazy after the race and all through the flight. Hope you can do the race!! My husband is heading to Phoenix to run his first half (he ran a full 11 years ago) with his brother, in honor of their father who died in July. I ran the full the year before last with said father. Wish I were going, but alas I'll be holding down the home fort. |

Thanks in advance. Not a doctor, (maybe consult AdventureBear or PennState), but I think you should be concerned with a flight that long that soon after an endurance event. I remember an article and googled it up. Deep Vein Thrombosis is the potential issue. More info here and more articles on google as well. You can probably minimize the risk through specific actions, but I am not sure. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() workerbee - 2010-01-05 7:14 PM Wow--the pages are piling up & I am not keeping up so good... Left off at page 64... Can anyone catch me up? I think there was talk a while back about a TT sprint tri in late January? Also, please forgive me, with the training inspires--is that something I should be commenting on. I am not sure of the protocol. Today I am in denial about getting a cold from pushing the holiday week of training. Did a 53 bike ride, slowish--but my longest ever and today beat the top female swimmer on our masters team in a fun contest--cumulative pullups. 21 for me in a total of 4 sets... No small feat as she blows me out of the water in the pool and is all muscle. Hope everyone is staying healthy and happy and has a great nite of training!!! Krista Pull-up? What's that? I think I have the wrong bicep to body mass ratio for that.... Nice ride - 53 miles - that rocks!!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the input everyone.I will rent a wetsuit for Lone Star for sure. Certainly don't want to buy one, lose more weight, and have to buy another. Will try on a one piece tri suit, as well as performance top & tri shorts. I definitely want to be comfortable. Oh, and Cyborg - Thanks for the suggestion to get slick tires. I'm thinking I'm going to kick some serious butt on the bike portion of the race as I am already fairly fast on my hybrid. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Holy crap...running while pushing a stroller is no joke! I attempted a 3 mile run yesterday doing that and my 5 mile run today totally kicked my arse! I'm praying my friend will be able to keep helping me out with (watching) Sammi so I can work out cuz those stroller runs just aren't going to cut it for the next few weeks while hubby is away! However, I gotta do what I gotta do, right? Now if I could just find a way to take her swimming with me! ![]() |

The only thing I would say is that if you're going to rent one anyway, look at the difference in price to just buy the thing. I know around here it's about $60-70 to rent for the weekend, and I bought my Xterra for $99. You will definitely want to train in it if you are going to be racing in it (don't want to try anything for the first time in a race!) especially to get used to the feel around your neck/ankles, taking it off in T1, the added buoyancy, etc. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I wish my gym were open 24 hours!! I'm up in the middle of the night all overstimulated and anxious to catch up on a missed swim workout, but there's nowhere to go. I miss the luxury of working out whenever I wanted. Actually, I think that's the only thing I miss about living in the city! |

You will want to do this anyway because you are going to stiffen up like crazy if you are sitting for that long. One other comment--do you know how you feel after running a marathon? I never know how I am going to feel after a long event. Sometimes I am fine, most of the time I have at least some GI issues to contend with which would be awful in an airplane. Not saying you shouldn't do the race, just some things to consider. |

Thanks in advance. You might want to post this question over on the "Iron Distance/Training" boards. I am sure that there are multiple people over there that have run into this situation. Agree with Suzy though....sometimes GI issues and crop up but I don't know your situation but as someone who is 6'4" I would not want to get on a plane for a 1 hour commuter hop after running a full marathon...especially my first. The concern over cramping after being wadded up and stuffed into my seat would cause me some major concern. |

Thanks in advance. Another vote for checking with the doctor. A couple of things to practice, consider that might help make it more doable. 1.) Ask the doctor if compression socks or (tights might even be better) would help. Wear them on the plane. 2.) Take an ice bath when you get back to the hotel. Even better...and more painful. (5 min ice bath, hot shower, 5 min ice bath, 5 min hot shower). It's a major pain in the rear to do all this but it helps with recovery and your legs won't be sitting on the plane with all that acid sitting there and not moving around. Ice baths are your friend in long course training. I used them on anything over 2 hours or after speed work, especially in the summer training but did take one have a half in Feb one time. 3.) Set up a light easy flushing massage before you go. 4.) Gentle stretching before you walk out the door and in the airport. (Pay the extra $$ for a seat with more room.) Hope it works out for you. Good Luck! |

Last month, she tought she was having ribs pains, shoulder pains etc. Woke up in the middle of the night and thought she was getting the snot kicked out of her. After a day in the hospital she was diagnosed with having a blood clot on her lung. Last night at class, she talked a bit about it. I wasn't fully paying attention, but she mentioned that she thinks it was due to racing then jumping on a flight shortly after.... |

Go get the Xterra sleeveless suit... it is only 99 dollars brand new. The real problem will be the lack of practice in OWS if you rent just for Lonestar. You need to swim OWS a couple of times before the tri and the lakes in OK will be too cold to swim w/o a wetsuit. Buy it for a 100, use it 3 or 4 times and then if it doesn't fit you at the end of the season or for the next season, sell if for $60 or so.... Or try to find a cheap used suit now if you can and do the same thing, sell it when it doesn't fit - you should come close to breaking even... |
