Subject: RE: swbkrun with us!!! - Closed Tobey91 - 2011-01-18 12:33 PM Question for the group: A friend of mine wants to do an unusual race with me, and we are looking for possibilities. He is a runner by background (including a number of marathons) but has 4 kids and in the past few years has not exercised as much as he would have wanted to. He and I have talked about doing a sprint or an Oly together, but circumstances have not permitted it. And I am not sure he is really ready for either - without some training. (The race with me on a specific day would be the carrot to get him to train more.) So far, we have discussed: Muddy Buddy Great urban race Warrior Dash Any other suggestions? Any views on those? I would love a race that he and I get to participate together as a team and are competing/racing side by side, rather than relay-style. (Neither of us drink, so the "post-race-beer-party" is not a big part of the draw.) Muddy Buddy is a fun one. Did it last year in Atl and going back this year. It's a relay, so you guys will go back and forth passing the bike to each other, but you get to (have to) go through the mud pit together. Totally fun....and if you want to really do it right dress in costume. It's an awesome race and for a good cause. Tough Mudder is one we have our eye on. Haven't done it yet, but it's on my list to do. Good for you helping your friend get going. |

We had a real mix of weather - pea soup fog, sunshine, and everything in between. Made the clothing choices a little problematic, but we managed with just a few chilly moments! Kim's an animal on the hills!!! We did over 5500 feet of climbing in the 50 miles, and Kim made it look easy. Makes me think seriously about a coach, a trainer, whatever she's doing - if it would help in hills like these, I'm in!! We chatted the whole time, except for when I was chugging too loudly on a few of the climbs , and it was great! Some wicked downhills that got pretty hairy with wet roads, and we met a few drivers that didn't take kindly to sharing the roads. ...and then there was the bridge on Highway 1. whew. We had great artichoke bread, and Kim risked the loss of aero to bring some home for Kathy. Impressive! Talked about how great the MG is.....and she raved about John - tall, dark, handsome, sensitive, supportive, blah, blah, blah. I promised to go home and try to see that in the logs. 3 down - batting 1.00 for greatness....can't wait to meet more MG peeps. |

I don't know what to do? a pool swim is fine with no contacts but OWS I wont be able to see in the distance to well to identify buoys and such? Absolutely. Should not be an issue. BTW I wear the extended wear soft disposables so I lose one, oh well.... BTW Kim, I do change mine a bit more frequently than Tony |

I don't know what to do? a pool swim is fine with no contacts but OWS I wont be able to see in the distance to well to identify buoys and such? I don't wear them, but Ryan does. He always uses his for OWS or pool swims. As a matter of fact, he hardly ever wears glasses! He seems to do just fine with them in for his swims though! Ok, many of you know what many of our spouses look like. Erica, you mention your spouse more than Tony does so I think we need a look see at the two of you.....I am sure several people are thinkin the same thing, but only I have the guts to type it. Who is this Ryan you speak of???? Haha, we're still pretty much newlyweds, so we aren't sick of each other yet! We spend wayyy too much time together and train together, so that's probably why I talk about him too much. Without further ado... OK...I'd say lose the dog for the avatar. He is cute, but you could seriously upgrade the avatar even if you did include RYAN in it. Hahaha! I will change my avatar once I have a GOOD race pic. I've lost 20+ pounds this season, and 10+ since that picture was taken in October, so no race pics I'm proud of yet! Until then, Nadie will have to do because she is my training buddy! P.S. - I'm back to class today! Fun stuff! How do you get your picture #'s low enough to put on bt? Linda Linda, try this. NO! don't attach pics!!! link them. no size limit. How do you do that? what browser do you use? Safari or Explorer depending on which laptop my wife isn't using at the time, though I prefer Safari. not sure about safari, but in explorer right click on the image you want to load. this can a random image, one from a flickr acct, fb, etc. click properties. copy the image location. click on the insert/edit image button (tree looking button) when replying/ starting/editing a thread. paste the image location in the image url line. click ok a couple time. bingo. resize if you want, to big and it gets a little annoying as it stretched the page out. its really simple and once ya get the hang of it, it takes about 20 seconds. lemme know if this makes sense or not. |

Is there a way to link an avatar image as well, or do you have to resize them to under 50K? I used Kim's link to the resizer and after a number of tries finally got a pic small enough to upload. Unfortunately, cutting file size didn't make me look any thinner. |

I've been so busy at work and getting ready for another trip to Hong Kong and Thailand (Krabi). This time part of it is for pleasure. It's going to be my 3 yr old's first trip to Asia and first time he'll meet many of his relatives. It should be a lot of fun. I haven't had much time to train. Yesterday was the first time I ran in freezing temps (22f). Wow is that a different experience. I have a whole different level of respect for the northerners.. I was cold pretty much the whole time but still really enjoyed the run. One weird thing, can you be so cold that you can't tell you're sweating? I didn't think I was sweating until I got home and noticed that my base layer and mid layers were completely wet and my running gloves were wet as well. The only thing that was dry was my running vest. Any who It's been such a long time since I ran outdoors, I forgot how nice it is (even though it was freezing). |

If you can't tell you're sweating, then your wicking workout clothing is doing its job! I'm the same way though. I actually think I sweat more in the winter because the sweat from my runs lately totally soaks my clothing. Maybe this is gross, but my sports bra after my 7-miler in 4 degree weather the other day was completely wet, and I didn't realize it 'til I was peeling off the layers. And I'd LOVE to have some 22 degree weather right now. My last few runs have been 5 degrees or less, and I think I'm ready for the spring! |

I am planning to be lighter this year during racing which I expect will help me to go faster. So far so good...down 6 pounds from January 3rd. Combination of no snacking at night (was pounding down the junk food at night there at the end of the year) and some increased training volume. Plan to loose another 8 with a stretch goal of another 11. |

I'm still working on getting lighter. I still think that is half the battle for me getting faster on the run. So far so good. I've emerged from the holiday onslaught of goodies with my weight intact and I'm starting to drop a few pounds again. And I hope to get a new tri bike in a few weeks - Specialized Transition - provided things can stop breaking around the house. LOL And that should make me faster on the bike, right? At least I will look cool! |

Not 100% anyways so good timing I guess. As far as 11, I plan to be more focused on training. With everything else we have going on with kids, my workouts, Sam's workouts, etc, I have gotten in the habbit of just reading workout and doing it. I do what's asked but I don't usually have time to look at the workout before I get started. Plan is to do be ahead of my workouts, know what's coming up, and make sure I am focused on improving, learning what the workout is supposed to be working on. Not sure if that makes any sense or not, but it does in my head. |

Just lots of homework, and hoping to get in a long bike ride on Saturday, or maybe even Sunday during the AFC game. Depends on how the work goes. To be faster in 2011, I'm determined to just stick with my workout schedule, no excuses, no I'm-too-tired's or I-have-too-much-homework's. I was too sporadic last year to make any huge gains. I'm still trying to find the perfect balance between working out and getting school work done, but I think I may be able to accomplish it this semester! Also, I still have about 7-10 pounds to lose before I'm at my ideal weight, and that should help quite a bit. |
