No pressure. I just wanted you to know that we're all counting on you...
Best of luck, positive vibes, and good wishes to ya, Dave.
Good morning, TAN! I just finished putting the lids on the first batch of homemade yogurt. Three hours in the fridge and it'll be ready for the first taste test. Unfortunately, I'll be at work then, but the girlfriend will be home to do the honors. is that hard to make? i want to do that!
Super easy! I picked up a yogurt maker on Amazon - basically, it just keeps things at the right temp for the duration (up to 10 hours) and then auto shuts off. You bring milk up to 180 degrees, then cool it to 110. Then, stir in either some store bought plain yogurt with a live culture in it, or a package of yogurt starter. Then put it into the little jars for the maker and turn it on and walk away. The whole process took all of maybe 30-40 minutes last night, I think. Not long at all You can even skip the whole 180/110 degrees thing just by keeping it in the maker an extra two hours.
I started with regular 2% milk and used a small package of plain Chobani greek yogurt as my starter. This morning I have seven 6oz. jars of very thick yogurt and I can use one of those as the starter for my next batch, which can be made from the other half of the quart of milk I bought. |

That sounds kind of cool but sounds like a lot of work for 7 jars of yogurt. I barely have 30 mins a day to work out now. hahaha |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() My mom and dad used to make yogurt. Do a google search for Alton Brown Yogurt. He seems to make it look easy too and he uses home items (like a bucket and a heating pad) He preaches about not having uni-taskers in his kitchen and uses household items you probably already have. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() Anyone know where the body measurements (basically just weight and BF) area went? How do you add your daily weight and sleep and BF and such?
NEVERMIND. It's a pop up window if you hover over training tab... Things are sort of hidden these days. Edited by Kido 2014-01-09 10:03 AM |

Yeah, I got a lot of those uni-taskers they sell on TV commercial from people as gifts because they know I love to cook. I used some, re gifted some, then got rid of a lot of things. Kept the waffle maker, coffee maker and espresso machines even though they are basically unitaskers but everything else was purged. |

I call mine the broken half shells. Someone must be buying this crap. |

I'll have to check that out! I don't know why I let it get to me, but I almost get angry seeing all the garbage they sell for "convenience". The most recent was THIS. Saw it in Bed, Bath, and Beyond and got MAD! I still don't know why! Maybe because someone is getting rich off the laziness of others? How this device is MORE work than just frying some ham in a pan, then an egg, while the English muffin is in the toaster? Just one pan to clean, not a half dozen parts of this ONE USE item... The egg cooks on it's shelf, the ham cooks on a separate shelf, the muffin toasts on two more areas then you still have to assemble it... I need to meditate more if this get's to me. Certainly this is not a uni-tool, but a multi-tool because you can use either pork or turkey bacon. What about a toaster? One trick pony, but everyone has one. Sort of. But that's like saying a pan is only good for one thing. Cooking stuff/frying. I have put lots of things in a toaster... The thing that ONLY makes a hot dog, or breakfast sandwich, or snow cone but takes up as much room as a coffee machine or food processor seems silly to me for the once or twice a year you make it. I guess I'm good with a uni-tasker if you use it all the time. I have a Breville milk frother/warmer we got as a gift. I like making mile for my latte and the wife whips up hot chocolate in it every week... But honestly, not much else you can do with it. And my coffee grinder is a one trick pony but use it daily. SO, maybe there are people that make breakfast sandwiches and hot dogs every day! These items are perfect for them! |

I am in complete agreement, but I didn't know of an easier way to keep stuff at a very specific temperature for hours upon hours safely, so I thought I'd give this a try. I view it as being akin to an ice cream maker (manual or electric).... sometimes there are just certain things where a purpose-specific item is worthwhile.
The sandwich maker press thingy is absurd. I saw that advertised a few weeks ago and had a good laugh.

Reminds me of this - how often do you eat that one specific meal that makes this remotely worthwhile? Certainly this is not a uni-tool, but a multi-tool because you can use either pork or turkey bacon. What about a toaster? One trick pony, but everyone has one. I actually just got my first toaster for Xmas... until now, I always just used the broiler in my oven or a flat griddle. Of course, the toaster is more convenient, which is why they are popular.
Citrus reamer - total one trick pony. Veggie peeler, melon baller, ice cream scoop, etc, etc, etc,..... a well equipped kitchen is full of things with specific purposes, and a bunch of really good all-purpose tools. While this is called a yogurt maker, anything that needs to be held at a specific temp for hours on end with an auto shut off can be put in it. Conversely, if my crock pots had a digital temp control, I could have used them.

I'm just trying to think of a sauce... Maybe just an herb and olive oil concoction to drizzle over it? Mushroom sauce of some sort? Don't want anything which will saturate a spongy thing like polenta. I like the mushroom idea. Depending on how you're preparing the tilapia, but anyone worth their salt would make a fruit salsa and blacken and grill the fish. The polenta is fine as is in this case. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() Well, I'm assuming we all know what we are actually talking about... Yes, I knife only cuts things (well, you can squash garlic with it). That uni-tasker is not the same as the hot dog toaster that ONLY makes hot dogs. I got tired of electronic devices taking up space like the snow cone maker I would use once a year only because I saw it buried in the pantry and figured I should. I got rid of my air popcorn machine because I can use a aluminum bowl and foil (ala Alton Brown). But I hear ya. I have LOTS of extravagant uni-taskers. I love my mandolin even if I rarely use it. And pressure cooker and crock pot. My turkey pan is wonderful even though I use it twice a year, tops.
