Well, looks like my favorite part of tri is evaporating for a bit - racing!

With the move and a trip south with the kids beforehand, I've had to pull out of two races I was looking forward to (did them last year and have a bunch of friends at them) and also Timberman (same category, but haven't registered yet) - not to mention canceling the vacation we had planned around one of the races during the third week of July.

UGH UGH UGH.

Well, I guess I'll just have to register for the HIM in Austin in October and find one more to do down south this year (trying to get 3 in - not that I care so much about rankings, but it just feels like a totally blown season without getting at least 3 in).

OK, vent over.  This is all good, but I'm going to miss these races - I love racing in the North Atlantic and Winnepesauke!

Still and all, getting psyched for the move, just letting myself be childish about missing my races.    Someone call the Waaaaaaambulance!

Carry on!

Matt

I love your attitude Matt. Take the good with the bad. I agree with Janyne and Ann-Marie, you may find some races in Texas. I've even heard of a bike event that is quite warm.

I'm sure Monica can fill you in on all the race opportunities, given that she's getting there before you.

It's never fun to have to miss an event that you've been looking forward to (and already paid for!) but the whole employment thing is good and I hear that they have races in TX.

As usual, Janyne speaks wisely.  But yeah, I totally get your disappointment.

Hey all, I'm back from Santa Rosa. The race went well. I'm having a crazystoopidbusy week.

Did I tell ya'll about Coach Scott? I re-met him at the gym a few weeks ago but I'd met him before at tri related venues. He calls himself the Ironman Pastor. He is starting a coaching group, which would be more economical than one on one coaching. Here is the site where he describes the group. I had thought about doing Socorro but not Patriot but I'd consider doing both if I join the group. I've heard good things about him from multiple sources, and I'd like to see how I do when coached. The price is a bit high for us, but doable, especially since it includes two race entries. He's aware of the IT Band issue so I'm sure he'd build that in to my plan (I told him I plan to try to run a short "freedom" run on Friday). What do you all think?

Do you think that you'll be able to attend most of the coached workouts?  If so, it's not a bad price at all!  It should like you did your homework and people like working with him...

Tell me about your freedom run.

My freedom run is just a very short (mile tops) attempt to get back to the joy that is running. The leg is feeling good with few pangs of pain so I'm going to attempt a super easy, flat, slow run.

I think I could make most of the workouts. My schedule is USUALLY pretty flexible so I could get to early or late sessions unless I'm out of town or have an early/late appointment in Santa Fe.  I emailed him and asked about easing back in to running and doing some strength training to minimise the ITBS and he said "I can assist you with sport specific strength training. I cover some of thath with everyone, but would be open to focus with you on your needs. I will also be dealing with recovery & recovery tools. I think you would benefit from that also. No problem on the ramp back up on running, every thing we do in training & racing has a purpose."

Agreed, if you can get to the coached wokouts. I am on the fence about coaching in general, but that is because of my goals. If I were going to be more focused, then coaching might be part of the equation. If you are ready to see how coaching affects you, then this looks like the place to start. Did you do either of these races last year? It would be interesting to use that as a comparison, even though there are always variables.

Chris, what do you mean?  Because you have been primarily cycling/running focused or ???

TJ, I'm with Chris, it would be interesting to see how you feel about the races after being coached.  Of course, it's really difficult to compare year-year results because wind/weather/setting swim course affect things quite a bit.

My goals are not set on race results. After 3+ years of this, I'm still enjoying the simple training aspect. I do think at some point I may have a more race specific focus and at that time I'll probably look more into having a coach, but I'm not there yet.

It looks like TJ is moving into more focus of that nature, so I think this would be a great way to try it out. Relatively low risk at $330 with a high potential for reward. In the very least TJ can figure out if being coached is a good fit for her. I would say that one aspect of that is to analyze if you like A) the coach or B) being coached. That may be hard to figure out though.

I hear you, I wasn't sure about signing up for races this year because I was considering a move.  But sometimes when things are up in the air, it's better to plan for the known than the unknown; to have concrete goals instead of potential goals.

Btw, I start my new finance analyst position on Monday!  It's a couple miles down the road, and still underneath the same corporate umbrella.

Speaking of coaching...

J set up  swim coaching sessions with Frank Sole to work on his IMAZ training. I'm a little jealous. LOL   He had his initial "consult" last week and his first session is today. I'm just hoping to reap some secondary rewards from this coaching thing.

I appreciate the input from both of you. I don't know that I would call it a race focus... but me thinks me doesn't push myself enough and I'd like to get out of the BOP. I'd like to see if being coached would help with that. I've not done either of these races. The patriot is a seeded swim start which means TJ starts way too close to the back, and I can get myself there fast enough without help. Socorro is one I've wanted to do but just haven't made it there yet.

As for the cost of coaching, Coach Scott's one on one rate is $175 per month. I'm not sure I'm ready to commit to that expense but if he keeps doing these groups I could stay with him that way. He did a similar group earlier this year.

Coach Scott has done IMAZ and is doing it again this year. I would love to have him in my corner if/when I train for IMAZ

Carry on!

Matt

It's never fun to have to miss an event that you've been looking forward to (and already paid for!) but the whole employment thing is good and I hear that they have races in TX.

As usual, Janyne speaks wisely.  But yeah, I totally get your disappointment.

WooHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was an interesting afternoon to be sure. I thought I'd cry but I think because we knew he was coming home (and not shipping out) it was a little "easier" for us.

I learned in this race that in order to finish the swim, you have to know where you are going. And in order to know where you are going, you have to learn to sight.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
