Expert 1226 Chicago | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread sdbryant - 2009-06-21 11:03 PM How is everyone doing in their training so far? 22 more weeks! I've had a couple of low-volume weeks due to various reasons, but after watching IMCdA all day, I'm re-motivated and excited to head into my build phase in 2 weeks. Train Happy! Training is going well. This past week has been the first truly hot week around these parts and it really mucked with my long, slow run in zone 1-2 this weekend. The past few weeks have been a bit nutty as I've missed some mid-week workouts because of work (that's life, right?). But it's a short week for me and I'm headed up to Madison on Friday for WIBA (Wisconsin Brick Adventure). I'm sure that riding the loop on the IMoo course will have me thanking my lucky stars for the Arizona bike course. But I hear ya...watching the CDA finish line definitely gave me an extra boost for my training. |

It was up one day and it filled up. I had to get in by paying the Community Fund way....I had friends that went down and volunteered so they would be second in line to sign up, current year competitors got first dibs. Good Luck..there's still a lot of Community Funds slot open this year and time to train. I'm so close to pulling the CF trigger.... they sure aren't going fast.. '99! (Fenway will get it) Hey, big year! Got to interrupt that training to head east in October.. Edited by fenway 2009-06-22 9:46 PM |

Extreme Veteran 710 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Woohoo! Less than 22 weeks to go! It seems so far away but I'm sure it'll be here before we all know it! I'm struggling a bit to follow a 'structured plan'. With work and life sometimes I'm just doing whatever I can to fit it all in. So...I need to poll you all here. I guess I should start a new thread for this but I figured this one would get out to all of us IMAZ peeps! I am doing the Janus Challenge and raising money for the American Heart Association. I'm doing in it honor/memory of a little baby from AZ who passed away at the age of 28 days old due to 4 cogenital heart defects in February of this year. His name was Liam...and I am running and doing my IM for Liam. When Liam passed away in Feb, his parents did the 'Heart Walk' and created 'Team LoveIAM'. Now that I am doing IMAZ and doing for Liam, I too have become a member of Team LoveIAM. Here's my idea. I would LOVE for a large majority of us doing IMAZ to become members of Team LoveIAM and race in honor of Liam. So, I was thinking of ordering Under Armour Visor's and getting the Team LoveIAM logo on them in hopes that we could wear them on the run portion of IMAZ. Liam's parent's Ross and Daradee will be there to cheer us all on and how awesome would that be for them to see so many people running in their son's memory/honor!? Here's how it would work... For anyone who donates a minimum of $15 to the AHA through my Janus Challenge Website they would recieve a visor to wear the weekend of IMAZ and for the race (if you want). Just make your donation and send me a private message or email me at [email protected] letting me know your full name and email address. During the race weekend, I will set up a time and location at the race Expo where we can meet to hand out the visors and meet! I'm thinking most likely before the "Pre-race dinner'. Also, if you have family or friends who are coming to watch you race and they too want to get a visor to wear to support Team LoveIAM they too can make a donation and email me letting me know they made a donation and their name and email address. In order for this to be successful though I sort of need to know who would be interested so I know how many visors I should 'anticipate' to order. Please check out the websites below and if you are interested in donated just do so through the Janus Challenge Link. If you are not comfortable with making a donation online, you can also write a check to the American Heart Association and mail to me (I can email my address to you) and I can fill out on offline donation form and send it in. Remember...all donation are tax deductable as well. Running for Liam ~Team LoveIAM~ http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/zipmurray <<< Liam's Story http://www.loveiam.org So...who wants to be part of Team LoveIAM at IMAZ 2009 this year? Please join me in doing IMAZ in honor of Liam! Thanks Leanne |

Member 32 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Hey guys, I just signed for IMAZ through a community spot. I was supposed to do CDA this year, but due to a death in the family, I was unable to do it. I am SO excited to have another opportunity. The problem is, I will be there alone, since it is a long way from Northern Alberta to Arizona. It would be great if there were some meet-ups in Arizona, so that I could meet some others. It would be great to see friendly faces on the run!!!! I'm in for T-shirts, if that idea is still kicking around. Can't wait to meet all the BT'ers in AZ Diane |

No idea, I don't see my workouts more than a couple weeks in advance when my coach deposits them in TP. It's good that way, I can't stress about much in advance! For me, not really thinking IM yet, still focused on my next 1/2 IM of the year, coming up in 4 weeks. IM time will be here before we know it though! |

Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Does anyone know if the bike course is rideable. I will be in Phoenix for a wedding in October, and if I can ride the course I will bring my bike. It looks like there is no problem on the map, but I saw somewhere that part of it is on an Indian resevation. By the way one easy week down and 19 harder ones to go--- Thanks in advance for any information on the ride |

Member 18 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Yep. I rode it on Saturday. You can't tell when you're in the reservation and when your in Tempe. It's a nice flat course, almost always with a bit of wind. Once you get on the beeline (Hwy 87), you get to leave the annoying traffic lights behind and the shoulder widens. Sad part about the course is that you just start to get into the open desert when you hit the turn-around out by Shea Blvd. If you want to do a longer ride while in town in October and want to see more of the beauty that Arizona has to offer, when you get to Shea Blvd, instead of turning around and heading back to Tempe, turn north and go through Fountain Hills and up into/around McDowell Mountain. It's very, very pretty up there. You could also continue on 87 past Shea for about ten miles, then turn south on Bush Hwy and go to Saguaro lake. This will take you through some of the Tonto Natl Forest, which is also really nice. If you do opt for a more scenic ride, please note that the road around McDowell Mtn is really nice, with a wide, smooth shoulder and plenty of cyclists. Bush Hwy, on the other hand, is rough and has ZERO shoulder. Good luck with your training. Scott |

That part is all pancake flat (except for one overcrossing). I'd park at the bottom of the beeline and just ride that, I ride enough in the city as it is. Drive the rest so you are familiar with landmarks, etc. |

Veteran 349 Ironman Arizona via Surf City, USA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Hey all.. Glad to hear everyone is doing pretty good so far.. I just started week 24 as I am scaling back a bit on training during the week and doing long stuff on Friday/Saturday/Sunday.. Because I have to get up so early every day (0330) to leave for work by 0500, I can't do more than 2 hrs trainign after work of anything.. Otherwise my endorphins are flying when I get home and can't sleep.. Been there and done that already several times.. Nothing like 3 hours sleep before a day of work and training. Glad to hear about the bike course. I train 2-3 times a week on a bike path here in Southern California that has wind the majority of the time.. I have started going later in the day just to get the wind while riding.. Sometimes its ugly, soemtimes not.. Nothing like going about 9 MPH and yer HR is at 150 because of the headwind... Hubby and I will be in Tempe the afternoon of 11/17.. I plan on doing about an hour or so around Beeline just to get a feel for the road.. My concern is the water temp as I struggle in cold water... Might have to go all 3 practice days just to get in the water, to do that "mind over matter" thing and show my brain who's boss over the coldness of the water... Lori...
