Not really anxious at all, but definitely getting more and more excited by the day!  This will be my first HIM.  When I registered I was excited, but terrified for what lay ahead and definitely questioned if I could actually do this.  Well, the terror is long gone and there's no question in my mind that I'm more than ready for a strong race

I have a question about the swim.  I am sure we will get our instructions this week but I am trying to start to get my mind mentally around the whole experience....

Is it a wave start or mass start???

Thanks,

Barb

I'm wave 11.  What is the logic behind the wave assignments?  Age groupings?  Why would male 30-34 be so far back?

That's a good question.  Having done a mass start at IMLP last year, I can see some benefit to safety with the wave starts, but having so many waves seems to be overly cautious.  IMHO.

It also seems to be a little bit of a disadvantage that some waves are starting 45minutes-1hour later, especially if the weather turns out to be warm.

as a woman in the 45-49 year old AG I am THRILLED that I am in the 3rd wave.  We are usually one of the last waves and therefore get the hottest time to run.

I can appreciate that for sure. This being my first year training, I don't really care that much about the loss of time and just want to finish on my terms (not walking) and realize that at 10:30 or 11:30 in the morning my half marathon will still be painful and slow.I just thought it was intuitive to have the people naturally faster go first to reduce the log jam at the end of the swim, the bike course and in T1. The quick math in my head tells me that T1 and the bike are going to be busier than they would be otherwise. If I was fast I'd probably be annoyed.Since I'm not experienced in setting these up or racing I was wondering why it would be staggered that way and not have the fastest age groups go first. I'm sure there is a reason that I just don't know.BTW, here's a total newb question I didn't see the answer too in the athlete guide, does the time get deducted that you have to wait? 50 minutes is a long time...

yes your time is from when your wave starts.

faster swimmers from every wave catch the next wave but transition is grouped by your AG so it will not be an issue.  The bike course and run course are long enough that things will spread out.

I think KEJ probably mixes it up so that us older gals are not ALWAYS one of the last and running in the hottest part of the day.

and 50 minutes is nothing.  Chicago last year I had like 3 hours!

The reality is, SOMEONE is ALWAYS disappointed with where their wave starts. We break up the traditionally "Fast" age groups, to AVOID the logjam on the bike course. It also helps with the drafting issues.

If you stack all of the faster age groups together, you'll get ALOT more folks getting out of the water all close together. They also have alot of folks that are similar bikers. It causes more congestion, IMO.

We have a really clean race, with little drafting. This is a part of the reason.

Having a bunch of waves also eases congestion on a course, as does time between waves.

I suppose we could have fewer waves, closer together in time. And it'd be alot more crowded on course......

And, yes, I do have a sympathetic streak for the older age groups. Putting them at the end compounds the issues for them. They're starting later, they're slower (yes, I know, in GENERAL, not ALWAYS), so they're out on the course at the end of the day by themselves.

I always await with great excitement the emails and phone calls from folks upset about their wave start. It's not something I can win. BUT, I can, to a degree, work to create a safe, fair race for EVERYONE. That's what we try to do.....

In previous years I had the chance to start in the first waves and this time around I'll be on the later ones but as long as your race is as fun as always it is cool with me

That makes sense to break up the faster groups and spread them out more like that.  I hadn't thought of it like that.  I was just thinking faster to slower in order, but I agree that is not really fair.

How's the lake looking?  We going to come in at 73 or 74 degrees on race day?  I'm thinking sleeveless...

I am heading up to Tman with some members of the Boston tri team this weekend for some training on the course. The plannis to swim @ 8am on Saturday and then ride around 9am and do the entire course. Some will call it a day after that, I am planning to do a quick 30 min transition run. Meeting at the Beach...

FYI - on Sunday I'll be riding from Waterville Valley to the top of the Kangamangus Hway and back in case anyone want to trashed test the legs a bit

Anybody know what kind of run profile we're looking at? Or better yet, know the course well enough to map it on BT so I can see what's ahead?

I think it's rollers with nothing crazy and about 1200-1500ft of "climbing" all in.  Not flat, but no one hill to blow you up, just cumulative fatique....  Someone confirm?

I thought I saw the route mapped on here before but didn't see it when I just looked.  I just saw the bike portion.

not a bad run, flatish with some hills although the hill at mile 5ish and 11ish can smack you right on the face
