Bankrupt... just put let Visa and Mastercard pick up the tab I'll share this, one of the funnier moments I can remember at a triathlon. You probably 'had to be there' but I'll tell the story anyway: mid-July, Providence Rhode Island 2008, 3:20 AM, standing on a city sidewalk at the end of a long-asss line of athletes waiting for the buses to take us to Wheeler beach, 45 mins away -- the start of Ironman Rhode Island. Everyone is cranky, half asleep and impatiently waiting for the buses to let us on. This guy next to me, looking half-asleep and miserable says, "A year ago I hit a mid-life crisis. I was torn between a mistress and becoming a triathlete. In retrospect, I should have went with the mistress. It would have been a lot cheaper."

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What is everyone planning to do training wise for IMLP: coach, purchased plan, wing it, self coached? I would love to get a coach, but as a college student, I won't ever afford one. I was going to purchase an EnduranceNation outseason/race plan(around $400), but that just seems too damn expensive. Considering what I NEED to spend to purchase a compact and possible larger cassette, I don't think I can afford it. I'm going back and forth though, because I don't really know how much the plan would help. I plan on spending the winter months hammering out speed work on the bike and run regardless. I'm also resisting the urge to purchase an aero helmet and a GPS enabled watch. I really don't think I'll race much next year other than USAt Collegiate Nats, a possible 70.3, and IMLP. |

In fact if I were to be honest with myself, I am not sure whether I have hired a coach in order to help with IMLP, or if I am doing IMLP just so I can hire a coach... Anyway, I figure with 20 years of self-coaching under my belt, the price of a coach for the full year will only cost me about 5 bucks per month, amortized. At any rate, as a college professor - I gotta figure out how to spend your tuition (I kid, I kid). Seriously - it is actually my wife's money, god bless her. But hey - wait - what does that say when your wife actually pays for your mistress....? Major "doh!" moment... |

I got myself (from using this site) through my first duathlons and sprint tris, but I hired a coach to get me through my first Olympic and Half Ironman distances. Went back to self coached this year since I knew the Half Ironman game a bit better. The full ironman game is a different game and I have no idea what to do. Going back to being coached and giving up the "control" I have over my regimen is going to be the hard part. Looking forward to someone else figuring out my training schedule is going to be a huge relief though! |

I will be using a plan and coaching from right here on BT. That's specifically why I purchased a gold membership. Well, that and the fact that "gold member" always makes me laugh. ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm going coach. I fired myself from being my own coach. I've read a bunch of books but find I'm all over the place and second guess my decisions on what to do day to day. I just started this week actually and like the change. If I didn't do coach I was going to do the Endurance Nation out-season plan. A lot of what I'll be doing is similar in some respects I think this off-season. Build speed/power/technique now and then layer in distance is what they advocate. They say "build fast and then far". ..I agree a lot with the approach and probably would have added a couple of swims per week to it. Coach or not, you need to figure out what works for you and what you buy into I think. If you don't buy into it and second guess it then it probably isn't going to work and you probably won't execute it well. I think there are a lot of plans out there that if executed well can yield really good results for people even though they are different plans.... |

I like having someone to work with and to see the big pictures. Having a coach helps me on many levels. I agree with the overall philosophy of EN for out season for the bike but have seen to many get injured doing the fast on the run on the out season. Run I prefer to run more often mostly easy to build up durability. I bought one of their out season plans a couple years ago. I realized that I don't like to move things around and adapt it to me so went back to having a coach. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I looked at the Endurance Nation training plan website. It looks good from what I can tell but what makes it worth the steep price? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in the process of finding a plan for myself. I guess I could get a coach....triathlon has sort of just ended up being thrown in with my accumulated med school debt... |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just a couple of other coaching ideas for those of you thinking about it. Some coaching groups have an on line group coaching experience. You get a plan based on your goal race and some other factors, you can post questions and ask about adjusting the plan through something like a forum but you make plan adjustments yourself. I have seen prices for these in the $30-100/month range. I know Jorge here on BT has one that price is on the lower end of things. Some coaches are $80-150/month so don't think all coaches are really expensive. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My plan is to go hard on the trainer from Nov-April using Jorge's winter cycling plan and a mix of other workouts targeting FTP. Almost everyone who sticks with it, sees tremendous improvements. Since I'm nowhere near my potential, I expect to do the same. I'm in no rush for the swim, so I plan to really focus on technique and quality swims so that I can get much better times. For the run, well, I just love running. I'm 11 days out from my first marathon, and I loved/hated going long. I'm young, and I've been consistently running long and slow since January, and I think this winter is the time for speed. I plan to focus mostly on the bike(my weak point, greatest opportunity to improve), but also focus on specific quality runs. I know that I won't be running as much volume as I would like, but I plan to include track mile repeats, longer tempo runs, and just other random runs to mix it up. After I recover from my marathon, I'll be doing much lower run mileage, but I think my legs will be ready to handle the increased intensity. I plan to emerge at Collegiate Nats in mid April, with unGodly speed. After that, century, century, century, century, etc |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() From personal experience, I think the right coach is really worthwhile. No matter how good you are at self-coaching, its really hard to be be objective about yourself and your goals. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last year I did IMCdA without a coach, I read a great book, To BE Ironfit. It really helps anyone doing an Ironman, time management (we all need some of that), and provided training plans. This is a good way to go about it for those on a college budget, wait a minute, you are doing an IRONMAN, there is no budget when you do one of these races... This year I have hired a coach to protect myself from myself. I had a severe injury to my hip and was told never to run again, with that being said, I am at it again and want someone watching over me. |

I had a severe injury to my hip and was told never to run again, with that being said, I am at it again and want someone watching over me. That book is pretty good. I read that one, Going Long, and The Training Bible and I like Be Ironfit probably the most and contemplated modifying the competitive plan a little to suit me at one point. Agree with Kathy that if you are injury prone than the EN approach could be a little intense. My point of view is that there is enough information out there to be very successful and you don't really "need" a coach IMO. It just makes life a little easier and you hopefully get that extra 10% or whatever of performance due to optimal customized training and peaking at the right time but it certainly isn't guaranteed. |

If you are going to be spending a great deal of time on one, I think a high end fluid one is worth the investment. I was prepared to spend $300 on a new KK Road Machine this summer, but I found a brand new one on craigslist.com for $200. I love the KK. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think most people would recommend either the Cyclops Fluid 2 or the Kurt Kinetic. I have the Fluid 2 and it's good for what it is. They are like the Accord and Camry of the trainer world. Good and reliable but not luxury like the computrainer or tracx stuff.... |
