Originally posted by Lovey I have had a Garmin Forerunner 305 since 2010. About 2 weeks ago, it fell apart, literally. Garmin said I have two choices. They can replace it with a refurbished unit for $80 OR give me up to $80 towards another unit. I loved my F305 but it doesn’t have heart rate based calories for indoors because it goes by distance. I can’t use it for spin class, boot camp (indoor & outdoor) or strength training. I would really like to know how many calories I burn for those classes or sessions. I want to use it mainly for running (primarily outdoors) and indoor workouts like spin class, boot camp or strength training. If it is water resistant, I can swim with it but that’s not a must. Especially since it probably wouldn’t read my HR underwater anyway. I just track my swim by total time and distance. I have a different non-Garmin bike computer with cadence so the bike part is not super important as long as I can track my HR since the bike computer will do distance and time. Any recommendations? Should I get the same unit or trade for something else?

My thoughts...I wouldn't spend $80 for a refurbished 305. Either upgrade or go basic (which today is still pretty darn good.) If you are only looking to use the watch for running I'd put the $80 towards a simple unit like the FR70. I believe the FR70 uses a HR based calculator to estimate calories burned, so it should work for gym stuff. You might want to confirm that with Garmin customer service. That said, I wouldn't rely on calorie estimates too much for your ST or gym sessions. It's really not going to be terribly reliable. Now, if you want to take the $80 and upgrade then the 310xt or 910xt are great options. I have the 910 and love it.  You may even be able to find a 310xt on sale somewhere for less than what you will get from Garmin even with the $80 credit. I've only used Garmin products so there may be other options as well. A great source to educate yourself on all things "gadget" is  www.dcrainmaker.com  His product reviews are outstanding.

I actually found the dc rainmaker shortly after I posted my question. The FR70 does not have heart rate.
I am leaning towards the 310xt.

I've had a good weekend for running, not so good for swimming.  Go BT world, great to see our team goal is at 20% already! But the Ghoulies team goal is at 33%......Hmmm....I see the Ghoulies Team Swim swim total is already at 115.38%, is there some funny business going on????

Just an actual swim with no goal messing up the numbers. I think it's a conspiracy to mess with our heads BT World. Don't be fooled! The month is 19.3% over as of Sunday. We're right on track for domination!

20 minute run in the books! I'm right on track to reach all of my goals for the month after week #1. I hope all of you are the same. When I got up this morning at 5:00 am it was 52 degrees and clear with not a cloud in the sky. Absolutely perfect running weather so I had a great run.

My goal was to run the slightly more than 2 mile loop near the house in < 20 minutes. I ran it in 19:51! Not back for having come off the couch (really... like no exercise of any kind in 1+ year). I'd like to be down to around 22 minutes for a 5k to consider myself in "race shape". I've got until next June for that. No need to rush things and get injured...

Happy Monday y'all!

Perhaps they recently changed the specs on the FR70 but the Garmin site shows it includes HR and calorie calc.

That said, you can't go wrong with the 310xt. It's a great watch and has multisport function if you're going to use it while racing.

Yes it does. It doesn't have a gps function so no distance tracking. I run a lot on paved trails and take new roads sometimes. I like to know my distance.
I would have to get a foot pod making the price difference $50. All assuming I am buying from Garmin directly.

Garmin is funny. Where I live it took it up to 15 minutes to get a signal. I got disgusted and gave it to my step son (he loves it in Panama). I have downgraded to the nike sport watch- no HRM but it does have a GPS. It thinks I am running really FAST when I bike, but I like it a lot and it gets a satellite almost immediately. I keep wanting to get another Garmin for multisport, but until I can get one with better satellite ability, I am going to save my money.

Lovey, you need to put your goal in the spreadsheet for swimming. That is why the percent is 115%. though, technicaly you are on the wrong spreadsheet, you are welcome to be an honorary Ghoulie for the month. It is always good to be on the winning team.

Sorry, I thought I updated my goals. I will do it tonight when I get home as I can't access it from work.

I think I originally put the # of sessions but will change it to minutes as that is easier to track.

You updated them, but there is nothing in the actual total goal for the month for swimming.

Not a problem for either minutes or sessions, what every you want to do.

Another 63 minutes running for me over the last 2 days puts me at 40% of my goal already! Now I just have to hold on which might get hard as my calf has decided to revolt and is in a super tight balled up knot. So far it does not get worse from running so I'm crossing my fingers!

Swim day tomorrow.

I had a good morning for training, an hour session with the club on run intervals followed by a nice 33 minutes in the pool. It'g great to have the time to get two workouts in in the morning, that only happens from time to time here.
