Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() badgerintx - 2010-01-06 10:01 AM Warning....I need to vent....I know this is not a huge issue compared to some others posted recently so sorry in advance to all that are willing to listen. So, I wake up this morning at my usual 4:30 am to get to my workout in with a horrible chest cold. I can "hear" myself breath within my own head. So, no swim for me this morning. I have kind of been on a roll with my training and am just frustrated and missing my workout endorphins today! So my question for the MG is: Do I try to put in a 3-4 mile slowly paced base run tonight to try to knock this cold out of my lungs (HTFU) or do I just lay low for a couple of days until I feel like I can breath again? Any input is appreciated.... Dino Lay low. To me, a cold tells me that my body needs to rest and take it easy. Why do I always get it during finals week is beyond me. When I had my cold, it was a BEAUTIFUL day outside, and I went out for a short run...5 minutes later I was hacking and couldn't keep going. So I stopped. I just did strength training instead, at least I'm not pushing myself, or doing any high impact sports. Other people will do yoga, quick ride on the trainer, low impact stuff...just to keep their muscles moving. I know some people feel like they can't sit still...I don't get it. When I'm sick, I just like to curl up with my dog, and my 4 cats (technically 2 since they're the only ones that get along with Stardust) with the fireplace going, drinking Hot Cocoa and watch TV marathons all day (or video games in my case). I like to slow down, and I'm an expert at it. *winks* |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know I am a little late on some of my comments, but I've been off line for a few days so everyone bare with me.... George - I like the idea of learning new strokes. Overall it improves your form and comfort in the water and makes you a better swimmer. Plus swimming improves core strength so why not diversify the muscles used. SUZY IS RUNNING!!!! Trina - way to go on the 1300yd swim.. Keep working your breathing drills. If you have to stop that frequently it sounds like more of a breathing issue than an endurance issue. Just ask Kim. Make sure you are breathing out completly before you turn your head. Also evaluate how often you breath, every other stroke, every 3rd, every 4th? Maybe that will help. And as for what to wear for the first race, I advise going with tri shorts and a top - not a tri suit. Get a good pair of shorts and then ride in them a few times. I quickly learned a proper pair of tri shorts should NOT be painful to ride in. If the saddle hurts - the shorts are bad. If you are going to rent a wetsuit I highly recommend this site f2r.com (Fit 2 Race). I rented all my suits from them. It is $45 for a full or sleeveless but you get the suit for 29 days!! They have outstanding customer service and lots of good sales on their used suits. The first time I rented from them the suit was brand new!!! The 29 days is super nice in that it allows time to exchange if the fit isn't right and to get lots of practice in it. They are also renting race wheels!!! Michelle - I think all stroller runs should count as 2x the distance!!! Way to go girl. Jenny - so what did you think of Claire? I am doing some of the same exercises as you. Dino - skip the workout and rest. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So i had a 1000m time trial today. Did a few 100m warm up and then 1000m HARD!! I was looking at my logs from last year when I first got into training for my 1st tri. Last year I could knock off 1000m in anywhere from 22-25 minutes, and hitting pretty much 20 minutes by the summer season. I swam it today in 18:50. Super pumped. I can't wait for the summer now! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Trevor - Wow! Hadn't seen that one. Must be a new listing. Thanks! Will take another look at it - so far so good. Dale - My bike group doesn't mind tri bikes. They're a nice bunch of folks and will let anyone ride no matter what they ride. We have lots of mountain bikes and hybrids in our group as we have a "no drop" policy. Given that, I do kind of want to start with a road bike w/aerobars vs. a tri bike. The reasoning behind this is that I definitely love cycling and know that I will be doing it for years to come. Also, I am ready to upgrade to a road bike from a hybrid - hybrids are enjoyable, but hard to train on. Finally, I have yet to compete in a triathlon so I don't know if I'm going to want to invest in a Tri bike or not. So far I'm really enjoying the training, so hopefully so. I agree, I'd really like to have both a road bike and a tri bike. jrj - Thanks for the input with your eating experiences. I will try every four hours with large volume on low fat/low carb food. See if that helps. I'll be glad when this phase passes as I need to lose weight! Cyborg - I've been professionally fitted for a bike. Definitely 54cm as I am 5' 10" tall. Road one around, got on and off it, and no hurting of the hoo-ha. LOL! Certainly don't want to buy one, lose more weight, and have to buy another. Will try on a one piece tri suit, as well as performance top & tri shorts. I definitely want to be comfortable. Oh, and Cyborg - Thanks for the suggestion to get slick tires. I'm thinking I'm going to kick some serious butt on the bike portion of the race as I am already fairly fast on my hybrid. The only thing I would say is that if you're going to rent one anyway, look at the difference in price to just buy the thing. I know around here it's about $60-70 to rent for the weekend, and I bought my Xterra for $99. You will definitely want to train in it if you are going to be racing in it (don't want to try anything for the first time in a race!) especially to get used to the feel around your neck/ankles, taking it off in T1, the added buoyancy, etc. Hi there. I am of the opposite opinion here. I say go ahead and rent one. I did for the first year and had no problems with it. Cost about $40 for the weekend. Just make sure you get in a swim or two with the wetsuit before the race. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've found alot of good trigear on Ebay I set up searches to look for certain items and I get emails when they are for sale, I'll place a low bid on many items but I have gotten lots of new tri gear like zoot tri shorts and tops, cycling shorts, jackets and more that way. Another thing is to post a list of what you are looking for in the classified forum here or check out slowtwitch. If you plan or riding with a group a road bike is the way to go, tri bikes can be dangerous group riding because you need to access the brakes more in a pace line or peleton. kickitinok - 2010-01-06 3:44 PM Trevor - Wow! I am not sure you "need" a transition pack. That is a nice thing to have, but a not a MUST. Trevor- Super Cool. **** TIME TO MAYBE START THINKING ABOUT OUR VIRTUAL TRI!? **** We will have one month (or so-t.b.d- thinking of our injured folks) to complete take your fastest 400m swim, 12 mile bike, and 5k run. We will put on google spreadsheet w/ Tony's help of course (hint hint). Total times for each team is then calculated. Fastest time wins. Simple, fun, and "easy" to do!! |

Just got back from a short jaunt to Reno (played some blackjack and ate at a few buffets!) and cannot fathom going through 10+ pages, are there any cliff notes that someone can provide? Trina, Tracy is referring to the fact that it took me almost 3 years of swimming to figure out from my new swim coach Allison (5 weeks ago) that I was not breathing all of the air out, thus not enough air was getting in...that would cause me to start sinking sooner, drop my non breathing arm and basically swim very inefficiently! wow, that was a mouthful. I am really good at breathing now as I do an extra forced exhale at the moment my mouth is about to break the surface of the water and my leading (non breathing) arm is just gliding ahead, hanging out, waiting patiently for me to take that stroke! I just had that as a breakthrough these past 2 weeks practicing and focusing on my breathing. I used to be already done stroking with my non-breathing arm as I looked down from the breath. Sadly, I did not realize this was a HUGE waste of energy...it allows for zero glide and that is why I was kicking like a crazy person. I am actually able to do the EVF (early vertical foream) now, and I am getting the kick to coincide with the breath. *if only i could do this breathing on both sides!* suzy, that's for you! we are waiting for me to improve my rotation before we start the left (my poor) side breathing ![]() ![]() Hope everyone is doing well, I will be once I get that CT USB cable from Racermate ![]() |

Did his first year in toe clips and running shoes. Made for some wicked fast T2 times. Wetsuit rent one only if the water temperature is too cold Tri suit Tri shorts Performance tops not necessarily. Test out what you currently have. Swim in a few sports bra/tank top type tops and see how those work for you. If you are racing sprints then lots of pockets are not necessary - just tape stuff to your bike Transition pack back pack works fine Waterproof HRM never heard on one that works in the water TI video Have I left out anything? Is this your GETTING STARTED FOR YOUR FIRST RACE list? Then I would remove some items to be purchased at a later date. Get your feet wet and then buy more toys. Just my 2cents. See my edits above. Tracy Thanks for the input. I definitely want a road bike, though. As stated before, I love cycling and want a new bike. I'm dogging my husband for one right now Going to go ahead and spend $99 on a wetsuit. I have to train in OWS, and the lakes here in Oklahoma will be too cold to do this before Lone Star. I will give it to my husband when I lose weight, as he is thinking about training for a tri Why wouldn't I buy aerobars if I'm going to be doing a tri? Because it's just a sprint? I don't mean you shouldn't buy aerobars ever, I was just giving options for spreading out the costs of tri gear. If you can afford them now then get them by all means. I think you list has all good items on it, I was only prioritizing costs to race necessity. Also it was my 2 cents on how to keep costs down when first getting started in a sport. There is a big sticker shock with tri gear and I would hate for anyone to be scared away because of that. I am reminded of the video Doug posted a while ago that showed one guy blaming his poor performance on his gear while his buddy was telling him to just spend more time training. I'd hate for anyone to not participate in a race b/c they think they need certain pieces of gear. That's all. And I agree with the earlier post about getting a road bike (first ![]() |
