An Oly 3 weeks out seems great. You may feel slugish a few days after but get a few good workouts in before starting to taper off for your HIM.

It will also give you an opportunity to confirm your fitness. If for example I rode at 90% of FTP in the Oly and run well I would have more confidence in my target wattage for the HIM.

Neil:  My 0.02.  I think you would be ok with doing an Olympic 3 weeks out.  4 weeks for me is perfect.

At 3 weeks you can take a couple days to recover and have a nice race rehearsal the following weekend 2 weeks out and another full week of quality workouts before a 1 week taper.

The taper period would depend on your volume and intensity leading up but for me 2 week taper is just too much.  That is why I don't like another race within 2 weeks of an A race due to the recovery process but it is all individual.

Just checking in since I had a great set of workouts last night.  Pre swim run of just over 5 miles, first training run I've ever done at 8:4X that wasn't a "sprint".  Then followed that up with a 4K swim, main set of 5 x 300 on 4:30, 10 x 50 on :50, 5 x 300 on 4:30.  The first 2K was with the masters group, I added the second set of 300s on my own.  Trying to build up endurance for a 10K swim in August.  Didn't do that last year (for a 4.8 miler) and ended up with lingering shoulder issues.

Thanks for all the replies guys - think I'll sign up for that one.

Swam on lunch and it was not fun.  At the end of last week I was feeling really positive about where my swim was, and the times that I was beginning to see.  Got in the pool at the beginning of this week and just felt off.  Today was the 4th swim this week, and I was hoping things would have corrected by now, but no, they felt even worse.  I'm dragging in the water, form has gone to hell, so on and so on.  I have no clue what I changed but it's messing me up big time.  I'm about 3-4 sec slower per 100 than I was last week....[/rant]

Happens to me all the time. I cannot explain it. I am easily off by 3 sec/100m on a bad day.

I can relate as well. Even when I was swimming all the time there were workouts where I would do great and would be able to hold a certain time and then the next...not so much. My problem generally seemed to arise from technique lapses...in my case dropping/slipping my elbows during the stroke. I would probably say that muscle fatigue was the culprit in my case...get tired and strokes get a bit sloppy (or get sloppy because of not being focused/etc). Do you add technique/drills into every workout or have a technique focused workout? They can help get your "feel" of the water back. Evening spending time working with paddles and/or find can help. Paddles because it makes you focus on what your arms are doing and can help build up strength if you maintain your stroke rate. Fins can help gain a better awareness of body position and help you focus more on what your upper body and torso is doing because you don't have to work as hard. Hope you work it out. Just my thoughts.

A friend of mine crashed pretty badly yesterday.  He's okay, but broke his hip and is undergoing surgery today.  He's actually lucky to be alive as some thick bushes prevented him from slamming head on into a rock wall.

Ride safe out there.

That is my kinda brick!!!  Did i tell you guys i had to pass on a day off work and golf tourney because my ITB hurt so bad after the race. i was bummed, lol!!!

2-3 on the bike today, leg dependent.  I still have "something" going on with it, it is no longer the side of the leg, now it feels like it is inside behind the knee, almost in the crook of the knee.

Rudy, not sure what you are doing treatment wise, but what you describe is the same thing I went through after my first HIM where I did in my ITB.  I couldn't walk properly for 3 days.

My suggestion is to get in with a sports masseuse or ART person straight away.  It took me over a year to find someone and basically sidelined my running in 2010.  One good session with the masseuse I use now and she had fixed my IT, and I now see her periodically just for preventitive reasons mostly for the ITB.

Name: Marc

STORY:  4th year of triathlon.  a few years ago I was severely overweight (70 lbs more than actual), diagnosed diabetic. Got a dog, started jogging to lose weight. Injured my knee but had to continue exercising. So I went back to swimming which I hadn't done in 30 years. When the knee came back, I decided to do both.  A friend told me to try triathlon, so I bought a bike, did a sprint and got addicted. Weight is gone, diabetes still there which makes long courses challenging. I cannot take on carbs.

I've been slowly improving. Last year I managed to get to Vegas 70.3 and this year podiumed in a two Olys (it helps to be old). I actually did a 2:13 Oly PB this weekend, although it was a fast course.

I am pretty well rounded, fast in nothing, not atrociously slow in anything.  23:30 1500m swim, 1:30 ½ marathon, 265ish watts FTP (went as high as 280). I am a wimp when it comes to racing. Need to fix this.

I spent the winter preparing for Florida 70.3 which I have done with a buddy. My plan was to do Olys this summer, but like a bug towards a light the HIM sucks me in. So I will do provincial championships in July then back to some Olys.

I am Canadian and split my time between Montreal and Ottawa. Work brings me to Munich and Poland frequently.

I love to learn from others would love to give back to the community any information I gathered along the way.  Some of the people who’s opinion I trust the most are in this group. Some of the people’s who’s opinion I trust the most have their picture in an avatar in this group (and it’s not Stewie Griffin).

Thanks for taking me in the group

Marc

Welcome to the group Marc!

This thread took off so getting caught up.  If you like hilly courses try Savageman half.  I have done it twice and getting ready for a 3rd go.  Fred has done it as well.  I know a lot of Canadians come down a do it.  I looked at your logs and you seem pretty fit.  It’s definitely a challenging course.

OK I am getting my climbing legs back.  I rode the Foil on a hilly ride this am.  The ride took me over 5300ft of ascent per my Garmin 305 Edge, which uses barometric pressure to measure the altitude.  The 62 mile ride was riddled with 4 big climbs, 11 12%+ grades and 2 18%+ grades.  Fun stuff!

This ride was more of something I would ride for Savageman training.  The effort did get harder after 45 mile/4000ft when the wind picked up.  I pretty much had head wind for the rest of the ride.  Needles to say this restored a lot of my confidence in myself.  I will know more tomorrow after my 10 mile run.

btw the Foil is a sweet ride and packed for speed with a 42/53 chain ring combo and 11-23 cassette.
