Since our neighborhood Master Swim program never came together this year we unofficially started our own "program". Basically we said whoever wants to swim at 5am, just show up and we all just do our own thing, while have at least a bit of group support/peer pressure to actually do something. We officially started last week and I've managed to go twice last week. (Was out of town two days) and so far made it every morning this week (technically Tuesday and Thursdays weren't mentioned), but figured pool opens at 5 either way, might as well swim by myself if need to be. Attendance has been lacking so far (2-3) people max, but we are trying to get the word out to more people and it is quite early in the morning (yeah yeah I know Sean, not dedicated enough blah blah ) I have a Sprint coming up Sunday. This was my very first Tri last year and I hope I will improve on my times, though it's supposed to be hot and humid. Running is still my biggest challenge. Not picking up as much speed as I'd like to. My neurologist says nerves take a long time to fully recover, maybe I'm just too impatient as everything "feels" like it should be back to normal and I should be faster. Oh well we will see over time. Other struggle I have right now is weight. I'd like to shed 10-20 pounds, but scale is not moving at all. I know my diet sucks (Way too much candy and stuff at work), but even when upping volume and/or intensity it doesn't seem to make a difference right now. Never really had that problem in the past so not quite sure how to tackle that one.
Glad you are back at it and getting your swimming in despite others not showing up. With the weight loss you pretty much hit the nail on the head about what you have to do - sort your diet. I'm sure that you do know this, maybe you just don't want to (and maybe I'm talking to myself here as much as you ). The sad fact is that as we get older exercise alone doesn't cut it anymore, we can't eat like we did as twenty year olds without consequences. Drop the "candy and stuff" and the scales will move, maybe not as quickly as they have before but they will move.
Glad you're getting the workouts in and doing well. I'm with Stacey with regard to weight loss. It isn't fun, it isn't sexy, but you gotta eat less if you want the scale to move. During the last few months I had convinced myself that my increasing volume and "clean" diet were going to do the trick. It didn't. I'm back to counting calories and bowing to the altar that is MyFitnessPal, and the weight comes off. Good luck and have fun at your race this weekend!

I agree. Whenever I am actively trying to drop some pounds (only drugs are measured in kilos ) it comes down to counting in vs. out.

Yeah, weight adjustments have really been in the diet. It doesn't have to be miserable, but can take some effort to become more conscious of some things about it. It really goes well in a number of ways when you find some habits that work for you. I probably gained more than anyone realizes after the accident last year, and probably still weigh more than most realize. Taking my time with it. Eating well much of the time in regards to quantities. These have made things more enjoyable and I think it'll last longer too.

Great job on the morning swims! And good luck with your Sunday race!
I will agree with the above regarding weight loss. My friend has just recently advised another friend, who was going into "30-days of an XYZ milkshake": it is not about magic trick over 30 days, it is not either diet, or exercise, it is about lifestyle changes. So yeah, say goodbye to the work candies, your teeth will thank you too

Mad Manatees,
sorry for being less responsive, but summer semester has started and I have to go back to reading and writing At least I have a nice-sounding subject: English writing, special topic: Pursuing Happiness. It does sound like something delightful, as opposed to my previous class on psychology of evil with extremely boring and depressing professor...

I'm not sure of a way to get notified, but the athlete tracker on ironman.com will show when you pass timing mats after the swim and on the bike/run. They just have to keep refreshing it throughout the morning.

I did use the service for IM Cali but yes, they are going out of business.

WTC's athlete tracker will crash mid race. I am fairly confident in saying so, as that has happened in nearly every race I've tried to use it. I am being a bit harch here, I'm trying to remember if it worked the last time I used it.  IIRC, they can sign up for text messages, but don't count on it functioning properly for a whole race. Actually, the last good experience I've had tracking an athlete in a race was this year's Boston Marathon. So, it can be done.

If you are looking for a long term answer, ie when you are out training, riding, going to the mall, etc, you might try Yanti's company - http://www.sentinel-tracker.com/ This probably doesn't help you for this weekend, but I figured I throw it out there.

Justin, have you read this thread at all?!  We only use it about every time a Manatee is doing an Ironman.

Crash is a little excessive.  More like, it stops updating ;-)  I just check it on the phone or at the computer.  Also, Garmin will update via your phone's bluetooth *but* it will chew up your battery.

Crashes, stops, doesn't work, causes panic, whatever you want to call it.   I'm being harsh.

For me, the stability issues would lead to it not being the best solution for a family on site. I only use the web based one and have not tried the app (if there is one). I've heard stories a few years back about the text capabilities being so far behind that people start to worry.

Heck, give her your phone and log into this thread. I've seen this group go "update crazy" virtually watching people in a race.

Thanks all. Clearly this struck a nerve with some of you! lol. I don't plan on having my phone anywhere near me so I'll tell the fam they can try ironman.com or just wait for my call.

It's hard to believe Ironman doesn't have this technology ironed out/available. With what we pay for their races I wouldn't think this would be a significant cost to them.

I've been running this through my head for a bit and I have to admit, the last 2(ish) races that I can recall were better on the IM tracking. It sure isn't optimal, but it did work out ok. I think Galveston may have had issues, but given the weather, I really can't say it was BAD.

When are you headed there?

Being that they give us all a huge discount to participate in their events, I totally get why they haven't invested in this technology.

I've used it several times tracking friends and never had an issue. It must be luck for me, I know it's not skill.

Look at the long list of racers and non-existant list of DLers! WOOOOOO!  Good luck racers - be fast, be safe, have fun!  Hopefully you Buffalo Springs folks are able to have a meet-up.

Happy early birthday, Chris!  I'll try to remember on the day but will make no promises.
