got in my ride today and was about a 1/4mile from home and got a flat. I have was just 2 weeks shy of a year without a flat when I purchased my bike. Just bought new tires and was using the original tubes.
I walk home it was quicker that changing the tube since I had to get back to work. Glad I did since inspecting the tire I found I still had some glass in the tire itself and would have ruined another tube.

at augusta 70.3 some dude was changing his flat 300 yards from the T2.  i couldn't believe it.  i yelled at him to run the thing in as i went by.  the guy tracked me down on bt and posted this in my rr..

"That guy changing the flat at the last turn was me! I had no idea how close I was to the finish. After I removed the bad tube I heard you yell and took your advice. I picked up the bike and ran it in. Thanks! You saved me several minutes!"

so, kinda along the same lines as your experience,  make sure you know where where you are come race day.  i don't know why these things happen.  10 minutes looking over the course maps can save a lot of time and hassle.

edit.  nice avatar.

Glad I have been avoiding this flue bug. Everyone at work has seemed to take a go around of this. I have been taking VitC and going through lysol wipes in my office like MAD. That and avoiding everyone.

Finally got some strength training in last night. Along with a light 20 min spin warm up and it didn't aggitate my foot more. Also the stretching and massaging of my left foot seems to be really improving it.  Thanks for the ADVICE

It is still in a bit of pain, More of a dull throbbingbut I walked around a lot more at work yesterday and plan on getting away from my desk doing my plant tour every hour for 15 mins and keep up the walking.

Back to swimming tonight, hopefully I will stick out the full 90 mins. My training partner had a bit of a rough week and I kind dragged her on Tuesday and promised I would leave after 60 mins. And she didn't want to go at all. I made her. Funny how I am new at this and I managed to drag a seasoned vet out and push her to swim with me. hehehe. I have to be careful when I choose to do this, cause she tends to spank my arse later on a run or a bike for doing it.

What do you all wear to run in the windy, rainy cold?  I got this morning and it was all the above and realized I was going to be hypothermic if I ran in my "cold" weather gear (UA turtleneck with a Nike running shell top and NB running tights with a knit cap and cotton gloves.)  Made the 5:00am decsion to changed plans to run the wheel at the gym instead today.

Made a new friend - best part!

You are BUSY!  I will try not to complain about law school any more!

Also, some say posts are no good without pictures, but I say they're no good without RECIPES!  Those meals sound awesome!

Complain AWAY - Law school is a HUGE time commitment!  I'm just sayin that being a SAHM isn't just bonbon and soap operas!  and if there's a recipe you want, holler.  Both of the dinners this weekend were mega-easy.

Although I complain about working hard, my wife (who was a lawyer but is now happily a SAHM) definitely works harder than I do.  But that doesn't stop me from joking with her that her life is all about bonbons and choosing paint colors.

Finally have some time to catch up, can't you tell? Loved your weekend, Linda. Yeah, being a SAHM is hard work. My neighbor and I always joke about our lingerie pillow fights we have in the middle of the day. Ha!!

And yeah, those recipes sound YUM!!

How cold we talking? Assuming 40-50F, it would be CW-X tights, long sleeved running shirt with a short sleeve on underneath, a baseball cap and gloves.  If it was less than 40F, I would add a lightweight long sleeve shell.

i'll step aside and let the more northern folks chime cold weather.  this should be fun to watch.  :-)  dino, i do see it was about 0 on your run last night, nice job!

40 is my threshold for shorts, other elements are irrelevant, rain, wind, etc...  top i'll layer with a running sleeveless shirt, light long sleeve asics shirt.  most times i peel that long sleeve off by the end.  below 40 i have a pair of new balance running bottoms, not tights.  i have a pair of zoot active compression tights but don't like them.  same on top.  coldest i've run in is 15.  that day i added a fleece hat and gloves.  i don't do anything else for wind or rain.   i'd say about 95% of the time i'm way underdressed compared to most people out there this time of year.  i get enough heat in the summer.

now, that guy the grape juice posted about yesterday,  good for him, but f that.

35-40ish  are the CW-X water proof or resistant?   I can handle the cold, it was the rain in that combo that I looking to solve.  I have no problem running in the rain in 70's+  in shorts, but cold wet tights was unappealing to say the least...

For rainy weather, I actually got an awesome workout rain jacket for free while I was coaching a high school soccer team.  It's pretty warm, too, so if it's rainy, I'm usually good with just a tech tee on under it, and the bottoms will depend on the temp.  I can deal with wet legs and even wet shoes, but not with a wet core or wet arms.

Looking forward to getting back to training on Monday.  Not sure I have ever taken a 2 week break before, I feel fat and lazy.

Down to about 20-25 Degrees F, I wear my Mizuno top as a base layer and either a Nike sweater alone or with a thin rain/wind breaker over top if it is raining/snowing or windy. If cold and real windy then the shirt sweater and wind breaker. I have only had to do this once. I wear a home made Toque by gramma and thin fleece gloves from the dollar store that way I don't care if I loose them. The Mizuno top is AMAZING. It really does warm up with your skin and moisture. It feels weird holding it in your hands and it gets warmer. Nuts but I love it, It will probably make me grow a thrid eye further on in life but so be it.

for tights I wear these Mercury tights from MEC I suppose REI would have something similar in the US. I am pretty aclimatized and I tend to overheat easy so this might not be enough for most people.

Hope it helps. At this point I have not had to brake out my Balaclava yet for running but I do have one. Oh and I have never run longer then 63 mins this winter.

CW-X tights are not waterproof.  Honestly, I hate wearing anything water proof when I workout because it builds up so much heat that i end up getting cold in the long run (ha-ha).  I did the Madison marathon the year it was 40-50F and it rained 3 inches.  Everyone else opted for shorts and long sleeves.  They were freezing mid way.  I wore those tights and a long sleeved shirt with my hat and was comfortable.  By the middle of the race, I shed the shirt and ran in my bra top.  Totally fine...

I think dressing for 40-50F rain is the hardest -- I get super hot, too. (Well, we know I'm HOT, but you know what I mean!) I have  Gortex running jacket but I rarely break it out, and certainly not for longer workouts because I get so hot. I'll use it for cold rain and shorter runs. For cold temps (sub-35F) I'm good in tights and a long-sleeved top -- heavier than a tech top, but not super heavy. I wear hat and gloves but usually shed the gloves after about 20 minutes. Have only had to run down to about 15F, so can't comment on the crazy-psycho-Canadian-Wisconsin cold running!!!

Thought I would pass this article along regarding orthotics.  Not sure how I feel about it so maybe others can provide perspectives.  I have been wearing orthotics for running and in my walk-around running shoes since 2003.  I started in custom and swore they helped me and then on the advice of a PT moved to OTC Birkie Sports last year which are less supportive/rigid and seem to work just as well/better...cost custom=$350 vs OTC=$60.

I also avoid waterproof gear. I have a water resistant windbreaker but I think it does more harm than good so I rarely wear it. My big discovery this winter has been wearing a merino wool base layer. I find it warmer, more wind resistant, and (importantly) less stinky than tech fabrics. You have to be careful about itchiness, though. I have this one and it's very soft, stretchy and lightweight.

How cold we talking? Assuming 40-50F, it would be CW-X tights, long sleeved running shirt with a short sleeve on underneath, a baseball cap and gloves.  If it was less than 40F, I would add a lightweight long sleeve shell.

LOL - maybe that's my answer - run faster and my legs will not be cold!

Have heard tons of good things about merino wool.  I know a lot of people who use it for winter cycling but you are the first I have heard to use it for running...cool!, errr warm!

Andy, tough question and really a matter of your personal "heat issues."  I will start by saying that I usually am very warm.... always running around the house in shorts and t-shirt all winter. Drives the Bride crazy as she on three layers, slippers, blankets, etc.  I guess the metabolism is working.  I find the wind actually is harder for me to judge than the temp.

I, like Suzy, avoid a waterproof top when it is actually raining, it just gets heavy.  However, I will wear windbreaker style pants with compression shorts underneath if it is cold or windy enough, otherwise just shorts.  Layers... Layers.... Layers!  And tech layers on top of tech layers work to keep your skin dry and warmer.  I seem to have more issues with wet socks than anything else.  I HATE RUNNING IN WET SOCKS.... ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE WET WITH YOUR SWEAT!!   Tongue out

SSMinnow - 2011-01-20 2:23 PM Thought I would pass this article along regarding orthotics.

Suzy:

It is hard to find feet flatter than mine. My parents tried to have me wear orthotics as a kid. They never improved a thing and actually caused pain. I have never had pain from just having flat feet. I have only just started wearing an orthotic to compensate for my leg length difference. Not for my arches. It seems to help.

Oh, as far as the study goes it seems a little random. They soldiers selected the orthotic based on comfort NOT on issues they were having with the feet. Some correlation should have been done with regard to orthotics vs. types of foot/leg pain.

oh,  there's a correlation alright... "The only indication seems to be that a comfortable orthotic might be better than none at all, at least for the activities of people in the military."

lets see, active duty us forces only.  that's ~1.4 million x how much is a pair = $$$$$$$$$
