I really appreciate all of this information, let me ask a quick (hopefully not dumb) question.  You mentioned to ziplock everything in the T1 and T2 bags as they sit out overnight.  Do you also put your shoes (bike/running) in overnight as well or bring them with you in the morning?

Thanks again to everyone for all the info!

Yep - everything is supposed to go in them. You do have access to them the morning of the race, so you could add stuff or exchange things - but it is kind of a madhouse - I personally would not have that as part of my plan - I just prefer to keep it really simple, but of course everyone is different. I do remember standing in about 1" of water at my bags on race day morning and saying aloud "thank you KathyG for the ziplock suggestion!"

All this bag talk brings to mind a question that I had during today's afternoon run.  I used sunscreen for the first time this year (61 degrees!) and ended up with some leaking into an eye once the sweat really got rolling down off my hair/forehead.  (I tend to have less of the former and more of the latter.)

++Do you put sunscreen in special needs bags?

++Do you put sunscreen on right after the swim when you are all wet?  Do you need a towel so that it doesn't slip right off of wet arms and legs?

++Do you have a favorite brand for training/racing?  I tend to grab whatever we have in the closet which is usually something I slather on my kids all summer long.

++Do volunteers do this for you so that hands don't get greasy?  (Note the irony, these are the same hands that will have Perform, Gu, sweat, tears, snot and all manner of other fluids on them all day long.)

As opposed to lotion, I find I like the spray type better - easier to apply and no greasy mess on your hands afterwards.  Last spring I picked up a bottle of this stuff from Bed Bath & Beyond, and I really like it.  Stays on a long time and through sweating to boot.  I'll probably even apply it before I put in my wetsuit and be done with it, aside from a small bottle i'll keep in my bike bag if I need to reapply - but last year through the course of 6+ hr rides, I didn't need to reapply.

I like the pump spray better as well. I have used Kinesys for years - made for athletes, oil/alcohol/fragrance free, VERY waterproof, won't clog your pores - allows you to sweat normally, but does not sweat off. Like rmiller1976, I put it on in the morning before the swim and forget it - it lasts all day. Shake it up well and spray it on - it kinda feels like powder going on - you don't even know you have applied it. Nowhere near the cheapest sunscreen out there, but it works. I always order it online, but I think maybe you can get it from REI in the store.

I am not. I did one about ten days ago...and have a HIM on May 6. Both of them are a couple of weeks ahead of the Fink plan.

I'm almost doing one (It's a duathlon) so I'll be getting in the bike and run's on Saturday and then I'll be doing a half marathon on Sunday.  I figured since that is my long run day anyways I might as make it a fun day.  I'm not sure how I'll be able to manage it after the duathlon the day before so I'll just be playing it by ear.

I am not racing this weekend subbed in a 4 hour ride saturday with 30 min trainistion run

and 1:30 run sunday 1:00 recovery bike. I feel this plan is lacking in bike miles so this is my way of making some up.

I'm a Finkster and I'm racing an Oly this weekend.  I don't think it is terribly important for my training, really just luck that it worked out on the same weekend that Fink scheduled it.  It's an Oly that I've always enjoyed that, starting this year, has moved from mid summer to this weekend.  This is a race that was known for its brutal heat and humidity, I'm curious how it'll be with the cooler spring temps.

I picked up a small travel, spritz bottle at walmart over the wknd. I notice that most spray sunscreen doesn't come in travel size. I can keep the small bottle in my shirt and use it during the race. That way I can spray my shoulders and back when I get moving! I've also got some sunscreen in little packs from previous race expos that I may carry on the bike for other parts of the body. Last year when I volunteered we had sunscreen at our bike stop, but you had to pull over and ask for it. I use any sport kind.

Crack baggies ( little ziplocs...can get them at craft stores) are also good for salt tablets.  Put 1-4 in each one. Then you have individual packets that you can rip into, take the salt, and toss the baggie (at an aid station, of course!).  Takes out the WTF moment when you accidently drop your whole tic tac container of salt tabs.  You can put the little baggies of salt tabs in your pocket or pin them to your race belt.

On June 16, I'm doing the Patriot HIM, and I'm going to be crossing the finish line saying 'how the hell am I going to manage to do another 70.3 five weeks from now?'

And then I'll think of Rocky Balboa, and say to myself 'one more round'

(of 70.3).

There will be big pump bottles of Sunscreen located inside the changing tents.

There normally will be a volunteer or two near the bottles to help apply. I recommend you let them help you. Last year I was in a rush during T1 and just quickly put it on myself. I ended up missing the lower parts of my shoulder blades. Which were then exposed to the sun for 6+ hours on the bike. Not only did this lead to my dehydration but also second degree burns on my back. I had huge water blisters for over a week. Not something you ever want to experience. (I do have some great(read nasty) pictures of my back and the failure to use sunscreen if anyone cares.)

I personally like spray type sun screen. I'll apply some in the morning before the swim, then use the bottles in the changing tents during T1 and T2. I know some people who put small bottles in their special needs bag to re-apply during the bike/run(only takes a few seconds with a spray can).

I just got the news that my lottery application was accepted for the NYC Marathon! I've applied a couple years now and didn't really expect this, so now I have one more goal for this year.  I hope I'm not deemed a NY resident this year, I can't afford NY taxes after all these race/trip fees! lol

hey guys
loving all the tips and tricks during the race day!

I have a couple of questions!
On race day, I plan on having a bike computer and garmin watch during the run.  I was thinking of taking off the bike computer(garmin 705) and put it in my T2 bag and at the same time leave my garmin watch in T2 bag until I get it to go for a run.  I think Im getting things mix up but I will get my T1 and T2 bag back right?

I am doing the fink plan, and I sort of tweak the scheduling around to suit my needs.  I didnt change the length of the work out or the intensity just the schedule.  Im starting to feel fatigue.  I am pulling a 16hrs this week (I think? or 15.5hrs) and rest week is supposed to be just an hour less from this week.  I was thinking of really taking the week easy to 8-10hrs just to recover physically and pyschologically.  The question is, would this affect my fitness and what I have built?
I looked at club training plan, which is created by our coach (canadian pro), and the rest week really looks like rest week.  Everything was cut by half!

Thanks in advance!

P.S.  I found a way to carry your salt pills the easiest way on the bike.  I bought a doucet pill box and drilled holes in them and zip tie them on my top tube.  The lid is easy to open and close.  Ill take a pic sometimes tomorrow.

Safe training!

I'm going to keep my garmin watch on my bike. I figure when I get a chance to put it on my wrist I will, that way I don't forget it during my run. I'd also like to have it in case my joule doesn't operate correctly.

If you feel you need to rest up you should! Taking a few hrs back is not going to kill ur fitness. I'm interested in see what the doucet pill box looks like

I had my first nightmare about LP last night. Woke up in night sweats! I was in the swim and started out great. This girl tried to swim over me and I pushed her back. She then started to drown me, so I kept pushing her under the water instead! When we got out she said she was turning me in and I wouldn't be able to finish. I told her to try because I would be finished by the time they found me! Then I got to T1 and I had so much nutrition and things to take they were falling out of my hands and shirt everywhere. I guess this dream was telling me to be prepared WAY before the event. AFter the dream I think I will be taping my food to the bike!

a 10 hour week will not affect your fitness.  In fact, if you're feeling tired and burned out, the easier week may help you to come back stronger and better able to get the most out of subsequent training.  Take the recovery week, enjoy, and come back ready to train hard.

Went to my primary care physician today for a routine check and some bloodwork. First he says to me."You're melting." (To my continued weight loss, 15 lbs since my last visit in Jan). Tell him that I am out of Advair and need mas, of course out of samples, and he decides to do a pulminary test on my lungs since I have been off Advair, about 1.5 weeks, since I ran out. Try and get a baseline.

He pulls me off to the side with the results and I start to think.... oh shi-nike. "Do you have an "S" on your chest?" he asks. "Your numbers are off the charts. Over 100% of anything expected...into the 115%-126% range on some." Also, said to keep up the inhaler for my asthma before workouts and after the summer I may be off Advair totally and to keep seeing him to see if there are any changes afterwards.

psyched to say the least!
