I don't have a foam roller but have this kind of "stick" with rollers on it. Is this equivalent ?

I really suffer from tight calves and achilles problems. I had to stop Sunday, I thought I was going to pop one calf.

I have been told that the "sticks" are not quite as effective as an actual foam roller, because you use your entire body weight on the roller.  The sticks are great to use as a travel alternative.

My masseuse also told me not to really "roll" my legs over the roller.  Rather,  I should roll very slowly and find the point that is painful - then stay there and move very slightly.  It's not fun, but she emphasized that the point is to keep pressure and work on the part that is tight/sore - similar to when she is breaking things down with her hands.  Makes sense in my head, but I'd love to hear if anyone has a different view on it.

This is how I do it for the most part as well.  I just find the spot and make small movements back and forth to focus on it.

x2 (or 3, or whatever).  I do keep it moving, but very slowly (and repeatedly) over the trouble spots.  That is, I do so when I'm not lazy and just skip the whole thing, procrastinating until my massage therapist gets to clean up the mess.

ChrisM - 2012-11-13 6:33 PM I think it's silly.  But someone on the main forum hit it on the head, this will be shortly followed by an email touting some training plan or another.  I mean really, "alarming"?   It's a ridiculous email.  Athlinks is a great resource for checking out the competition checking up on race results, and it should stick to what it does best

Yep.  Storing and presenting race results -- they're pretty good at that.  Data analysis?  Not so much.  (I deleted the email before reading it -- I don't have time for that crap.  Finding out what was in the email confirms for me my policy of 'delete and forget'.)

*sigh* - Apparently my Powertap problem from yesterday is more than just dead batteries.  I replaced them tonight and still nothing.    Do PTs just die completely?

I tried a couple of computers to make sure it wasn't that.  Put my wife's PT on my bike and it works fine.  Looks like I may have to give them a call.

Gee, I'm sorry to hear that your wife's PT died....

LOL...Arend, how many miles did you have on your PT?  I've been wondering how long mine would last.  I've got close to 15k miles on it.

I dunno, I bought it used.

Chris, it's funny you say that because now that I look more closely I've actually been using hers all along and that's the one that died.    She hasn't used it since her accident and I had a wheel cover on one (mine) for races and the other for training.

I am deeply insulted and offended by all of these slow people cluttering up the races just to finish. The very receipt of a finishers medal by these people irrevocably harms the prestige and honor that has been traditionally associated with my own finisher's medals. I have been racing for 128 years and this sort of mentality would have NEVER been tolerated back in the day. It is this attitude of "participating" and "just finishing" that is ruining this sport that I use to love so much.

Oops, sorry. I thought I was logged into my slowtwitch account. Carry on as you were.

That is definitely not the angle I was coming from. I guess I was just wondering why Athlinks (a company that obviously relies on participation in running, tri, etc events) was kind of bagging on America for getting slower?

I do admit, as a parent and teacher, I have a slight problem with the "everyone is a winner" mentality. However, I do believe in the "everyone should be able to participate" idea. Someone's 17 hour Ironman might be just as difficult for them to achieve as someone's 10 hour IM. For most of us, it's about the personal challenge.

Oh, yes, I know - just kidding - and I completely agree with you of course. I remember a long time ago Paula Newby Fraser being asked why she stuck around the IM finish line all day long and late into the evening until the last competitor came across the line. She said that it was because she was sure that they had accomplished something that she herself could not do. She gave all sorts of examples as to why she felt that way, but the one that stuck in my head was that a BOP age grouper's feet would hit the ground at least four times as many as her's during the marathon. I have never, ever forgot that and frankly am in awe of the "just finishers" because of it.

I remember reading somewhere Bill Rodgers saying that he really admires AG athletes and that he couldn't imagine running for 4 hours.  I think a lot of people take that statement as a joke.  I think he was serious.

Another 5000 meter Wednesday in the pool at 5:30am.  Swimming with the kids seems to be working as we did a 50 fast from a dive at the end and I was able to do a 27.6 which is the fastest I've gone since I started swimming again.  Maybe could have gotten into the 26s if it wasn't at the end of a long practice - I was dying hard for the last 10-15 m of the 50.

I fear for the safety of my lunch, it may not make it to 10:00...

It's kind of miserable weather here today, rain, wind and a few degrees above freezing.  I hope everyone has a good training day!

Arend - that is awesome - way to rock it! I was all proud of myself for hitting sub :37 on a late set of 50s the other day after a 10 week layoff from swimming, but that is chump compared to you. I watch the kids go off the blocks all the time but in all my years of swimming have never once given it a shot. But next time I am at the pool maybe I will get a lesson or two on diving starts, especially now that I know it will make me AT LEAST 10 seconds faster per 50

I was not really looking forward getting back in the pool after my layoff as my prior experience has let me know that it is sheer torture - even a week off sometimes left me feeling like I was starting over. As an adult-onset swimmer I have always been a little jealous of my friends that swam competatively as kids: they can go months without swimming and then jump in the water and just kill it. While I cannot say I was exactly killing it, getting back in the pool this week was not as bad as I feared - it actually was quite enjoyable. Form was good and fitness was still OK. Maybe after 22 years I have finally become an actual real-life swimmer?!

Oh, and an early work day for me to get ready for a long afternoon of meetings and presentations, but I am about to sneak out for a 1:15 base run with 3x5 minute intervals tossed in focused on stride and turn over. Safe training everyone.

Before the marathon, I said I was going to go under 5 hours, because if I hit the 5 hour mark and I was still on the course, I'd quit. I was only half-joking.

I really can't imagine being out there that long.

Elaine - no matter what that sounds like you are going in the right direction for your goals. But more importantly - thanks for donating!

While I am not an active participant in the current weight loss/eating better challenge, I am rooting for you all. I am currently in a strength training block so it is not the best time to be worrying about weight gain or loss IME. That said I did actually step on the scale this morning and I am right at 9 pounds over my most recent ironman race weight and about 5 pounds over my regular training weight, but normal for this time of year. WAY over my sprint/Olympic distance weight, but that is long course training for you....

I just got back from ... wait for it ... the pool!  Actually, third time in a row for me this week.  I realize that to those of you swimming 5K for breakfast that's nothing.  For me, it is a huge psychological hump to get over on the way to regular swim training.

Weight:  Congrats to you Elaine!  I also have somewhat good news.  While I'm not down as much as I'd like, average of weigh-ins Fri-Sun was 143, which is clearly down from where I was a couple of weeks ago (145-146).  (I weigh in only on Fri-Sun mornings, not every day, or I'd end up becoming obsessive and depressed.)  Even better, my gut is beginning to disappear.  No evidence of a six-pack yet, but I think it might be on the horizon!

Questions for the doctors : how much blood can I give ? It seems it's my only hope at weight loss.

I will be out of running commission for an undetermined time, my calve pain may be more than just soreness. Need to figure this out. Oh well, there's always swimming.

Missed the last couple of days training.  Didn't feel to guilty about Monday...but yesterday I simply forgot my bike shoes and helmet at home and couldn't ride after work.  Could have ran, but just got lazy.  This past weekend was a challenging weekend for me food wise with several parties and get togethers.  I didn't do "good", but I suppose it could have been worse.

So far my eating habbits have been hit and miss.  At least I'm constantly thinking about it though.  Still haven't drank diet soda in maybe about a month so at least I've stayed strong on that front.

I'll be giving blood at the end of the month since this is usually the only time of the year I'm willing to give...so maybe that will help me lose a pound or two too...LOL.

This is the harsh reality I'm facing.  If I want to swim more than 3x per week, or if I want to maximize my training schedule (next spring when my HIM training builds), I'm going to need to swim in the morning.  The pool close to home (only about a mile away) closes from 6-9am for cleaning, so I'll likely need to jump in the water by 5am.

What it would do is free up my afternoon schedule nicely for better bike and run training.

Tempo/Threshold Pace or 1 hour TT pace.  I use Daniels VDOT to calculate all my paces for training (similar to McMillan's calculator) so that is just how I refer to it.

Lots of different lingo out there.

They really are that good - got a new wireless PRO model since the wired model was no longer supported = awesome.

I swam at the pool for the second time this week, and complained for the second time.  They've got the temp of the pool set to 85!!  I only lasted 25 minutes then I had to get out, cause I was overheating.  They said they have had complaints about the water being too cold at other times.  I very kindly reminded them there is a difference between people floating in a pool and those swimming in a pool.

I don't know that I'll win this fight, and if I don't then I think I'm done with this gym - which would be a shame since it's the closest pool to me for lunch workouts.

Rusty - Are you racing IM next year?

Hey Ryan - yes, both the wife and I are in again for IMLP - the third time has got to be the charm, right? I learned two years ago that I would have the opportunity to take 8 (paid) months off from work and saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to "train like a pro." for the last two years I have been working to lay down a solid base of training so I could take advantage of that time. "That time" starts on December 10th (in about three weeks). I selected IMLP two years ago because it is a relatively tough course and the date falls right at the end of that 8 month window. My goal two years ago was to once-and-for-all see how fast I could go at the IM distance, but after last year it is honestly just to try and get there healthy. I really am not sure how many marathons my legs have left in them which is too bad because I REALLY enjoy ultra running. After next July I am not sure what I will do, but I think I have my eye on the next Paris-Brest-Paris Randonneurs in 2015. The timing for that would be great as well as it would take me that long to build the cycling fitness and get the points I would need to qualify...
