Nice work Michael!

Had a good run at lunch today with MS: 3x1 mile at TP.  I am starting to get a lot more comfortable running at threshold which is a good thing.

Thanks!  Your threshold pace is dropping.  That's the good news.  The bad news is that running threshold is about to get less comfortable...  You've got enough miles in your legs that the axiom "it doesn't get easier, you just get faster" is true.

Yup. And I have a reasonable travel stipend as well, so long as I use it for academic purposes. I think my first trip might be to Penn State. I hear they have lots of easy KOMs in the area...

I just got back from ... wait for it ... the pool!  Actually, third time in a row for me this week.  I realize that to those of you swimming 5K for breakfast that's nothing.  For me, it is a huge psychological hump to get over on the way to regular swim training.

Weight:  Congrats to you Elaine!  I also have somewhat good news.  While I'm not down as much as I'd like, average of weigh-ins Fri-Sun was 143, which is clearly down from where I was a couple of weeks ago (145-146).  (I weigh in only on Fri-Sun mornings, not every day, or I'd end up becoming obsessive and depressed.)  Even better, my gut is beginning to disappear.  No evidence of a six-pack yet, but I think it might be on the horizon!

Michael that is awesome! Where would you really like to be right now? Can you hold "race weight" year round or does that fluctuate for you?

Come on over. Would be delighted for you to own a few of our easy KOMs.

Seriously you would always be welcome Rusty, we do have a GREAT area for cycling, which James can attest to!

ha ha! Thought that might shake you out of the bushes, Fred! I'll take you up on that, but it is going to have to warm up there a little before I do. Good luck getting through the rest of the work week - looking forward to hearing how tW bike tweaks work out. Zipping out the door for a pre-work ride myself.

Tempo/Threshold Pace or 1 hour TT pace.  I use Daniels VDOT to calculate all my paces for training (similar to McMillan's calculator) so that is just how I refer to it.

Lots of different lingo out there.

Thanks Ryan...while I realize the google is my friend, I'll ask here in case others have the same question: Under Daniels VDOT or McMillan's calculator, would your 3x1mile run at TP be at your 5K pace, or something faster?

This darkness is putting a cramp in my training.  And we don't even change time here.  So instead of a cold dark run I'll wait for it to warm up to t-shirt weather.  Working from home offers me flexibility and I don't think I take advantage of it near enough anymore.

It was just getting bright out (and 3C with 40km/h wind gusts) for my bike commute this morning along Waverly Road.

Thought you might like to know what you are missing out on

I am not sure "missing" is the correct word to use Shane.  lol  Although it is 4C here, but none of that wind

It's been weird so far this fall; some normal chilly days but then on Tuesday, it was 12C when I left the house and we got up to 17C that day. Not often I can commute in shorts and short sleeves in November!

Rusty - That is awesome.  I remember you mentioning the 8 months off awhile back.

Brian - The TP intervals would be at your 1 hour race effort.  For me that is 15K pace but whatever pace you can hold for an hour.

5K pace would be a VO2 effort and I will start doing those types of intervals further down the line when bike intensity goes down a touch.  Mile repeats would probably be the max length interval that I would do at that pace outside a race or test effort.

Bizarre weather for sure.  I'm pretty sure I didn't ride outside in november last year.  we've had a ton of wind this fall.

Yeah, cold I don't mind, dark I don't mind, wind I don't mind and even a little rain here and there I don't mind. Put them all together and I am on the trainer for sure. On tuesday of this week I was in long heavy leg warmers, layers and a jacket (0c/31f) but today I was back to knee warmers and arm warmers. Last year I don't remember ever having to wear more than knee/arm warmers...

Anyone racing a Turkey Trot 5K or 10K on Thanksgiving to establish (or re-establish) a baseline for your winter run training goals?

Thanks Ryan...makes sense. I didn't realize that TP was defined the same way for running and biking.

Rusty's 8 months off reminds me that I need to put in for a sabbatical. I wouldn't be as well supported for travel, but just the time off . . . I need a break.

Just got back from the HLC site visit I was on. Great times. Seriously. Never did 13 hour days go by so quickly. As the day went on, I gained more energy. I love hearing what people do and how they do it. Training took a hit, but I needed to rest from the race run run/walk/plod last weekend.

Regarding weight loss: Breakfast at the hotel; lunches catered; dinners out . . . I'm not stepping on the scale for a couple more days.

I was going to but I just could not justify $40 for a 5k race with less then 50 people in it, even if I was going to place.  lol

...but that's only $8 per K ;)

Actually, I agree with you. My brother-in-law and I continually debate this...he will be the one to simply run a 5K on his own through his neighborhood...for free.

I almost spit water all over my computer.  I do have the gear but honestly I am a fair weather rider.  When living in Oregon I would ride in all kinds of crap to prep for my clubs century ride and once that was done you just couldn't get me out unless it was sunny.  Riding with friends helps a lot I find when the weather sucks.  But boy, do I have some stories I can tell about cold, usually involving rain.  Like you though I'll run in nearly anything but when the morning says <40 and the afternoon says >60 it's easy for me to talk myself into waiting.

I LOL'd when I read that too Arend - something tells me you are a little tougher than that!

A number of years ago I was going to buy a new bike. I decided to keep my old bike and instead spent about $1000 on a ton of cold weather cycling clothes. That decision turned out to be a WAY better investment than any other training or racing aid I could have spent it on. Being able to ride outside comfortably all winter makes me WAY faster in the summer than any power meter, race wheels, or electronic shifting ever could. True though that many of you have lots tougher winter conditions than we ever face; we typically only have about 10 days a year that we have to ride when it is much below freezing.
